FINAL PROGRAM

2 Welcome! On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists (FSA), I would like to welcome you to the paradise that is the Breakers Resort, home this year to the FSA Annual Meeting ANNUAL MEETING June 13-15, 2014 The Breakers Palm Beach, Florida FLORIDA SOCIETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGISTS 701 Brickell Avenue, Suite 1550 Miami, FL PHONE: FAX: [email protected] WEBSITE: ABOUT THE FSA The Florida Society of Anesthesiologists is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to elevate and to maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and to improve the care of their patients. Since its founding in 1948, the Society s achievements have made it an important voice in Florida medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain. For more information about the society, please visit marks the sixty-sixth year since the founding of our society and I want to thank you for being a member of the FSA and ASA. Our profession has made remarkable strides in safety and it is through the support of physicians like you that we are able to continue our work of advocacy for our patients and our specialty. This weekend, I look forward to meeting all of you, whether in the lecture hall, workshop, exhibit gallery, or poolside, and to get your valuable feedback on where the FSA should be focusing its efforts. FSA Program Chairman Dr. Chris Giordano and Annual Meeting Co-Chair Dr. Leo Rodriguez are to be commended for designing the didactic sessions to allow you to obtain CMEs in a wide variety of subspecialty areas. There will also be hands-on workshops to help you refine your skills in managing the difficult airway as well as performing regional blocks. Dynamic ASA leaders are here to give us their thoughts on nation-wide issues, and we are all in for a very special experience as Andrew Harris, MD, the first anesthesiologist in the US Congress, presents his unique perspective on what s happening in Washington DC. His 11:45 am Saturday talk should not be missed as it will certainly be insightful and entertaining. The relaxing island vibe of this special place lends itself particularly well to networking with your colleagues from around the state. For me, this is the best part of the meeting, and I hope you will also enjoy getting to know your fellow physicians and share your experiences on what s working to make a successful anesthesia practice. As our specialty faces many pressures, it is refreshing to be in an environment where everyone around us understands our mutual challenges. I am honored to present this year s FSA Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Kurt Markgraf. Kurt is a past president of the FSA and he has remained very active as our chairman of legislative affairs. This is no small task, given the formidable political and regulatory trials we have faced over the last decade. With Kurt s knowledgeable and calm hand on the tiller, the FSA has successfully navigated some very choppy waters. When you see him this weekend, please join me in congratulating him. It is my sincere hope that this time away from work affords you the chance to relax, learn something new to take back to your group, and get reacquainted with someone special in your lives. Soak up everything that the meeting, the resort, and Palm Beach has to offer just don t forget the sunscreen! Jay Epstein, MD Jay Epstein, MD President, Florida Society of Anesthesiologists Greater Florida Anesthesiologists Clearwater, FL The Breakers, Palm Beach, Florida Jay H. Epstein grew up in St. Petersburg. He played collegiate soccer while majoring in political science at Emory University. Jay attended medical school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland prior to doing his anesthesiology residency and critical care medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. In 1998, he returned to the Tampa Bay area with his wife, Sandy, a pediatric dentist. They have three girls, twins Samantha and Allison (14) and Lauren (11). Jay has been active in the FSA since 1999, citing interacting with like-minded colleagues as a reason for staying involved. He is in private practice as a partner in Anesthesia Associates of Pinellas County, a division of Greater Florida Anesthesiologists and a partner group of Sheridan Health Care, where he does cardiac, obstetric, general and office-based anesthesia.

3 GENERAL INFORMATION FSA PROGRAM COMMITTEE CHAIR: Christopher Giordano, MD CO-CHAIR: Leopoldo Rodriguez, MD, FAAP Thomas Fuhrman, MD Jeffrey Jacobs, MD William Turnage, MD MEMBERSHIP IN THE FSA The Florida Society of Anesthesiologists has a membership of over 1800 members, and includes not only practicing anesthesiologists, but also residents, research scientists, anesthesiology assistants, nurse anesthetists, and students. The benefits of membership to the FSA are many, and include: A supportive environment for practitioners and students of anesthesiology to present their research and to network with others in the profession; Participation in the committees and leadership roles that guide the direction of anesthesiology in Florida; Representation through the FSA Political Action Committee along with relevant, up-to-the-minute information about current state and federal legislative issues affecting anesthesiology; Promoting interactions and facilitating mentorships between students, trainees and senior anesthesiologists; An informative quarterly newsletter, FSA Today. As a state component of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, FSA members must also belong to the ASA. The FSA uses the ASA membership application for state membership. There are several available categories for membership, and you can find your appropriate category on the FSA website at About-ASA/Apply-Now.aspx. FSAPAC is the political component of the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists. Federal law as well as Florida state law prohibits associations such as FSA from involving themselves in the political process. Only PACs can participate, and FSAPAC strives to play a key role in shaping the policies important to Florida anesthesiologists. Compensation, regulatory issues, the role of non-physician providers in the practice of anesthesiology these and other vital issues are the focus of FSAPAC, and the committee provides direct contributions to incumbents, challengers and open-seat candidates for office who have proven that they are willing to listen to FSA s message and share the vision of providing the highest quality anesthesiology care.
