Graphic Standards Manual 5+5 Defence Initiative Logo
This manual sets out the rules of the Visual Identity of the 5 +5 Defence Initiative. These rules should be respected and implemented correctly. Only with a graphical consistency, it is possible to create a clear and recognizable image.
Creating a Visual Identity for the 5 +5 initiative, is justified by the need to generate, in harmony, a universe that surrounds the already existing coherent graphic symbology. Thus, the modernization and innovation of this visual identity has the purpose of imposing this image as a mirror of the prestige and credibility inherent in this Initiative. The 5 +5 Defence Initiative logo is the unique, exclusive and standardized graphical representation of the 5 +5 Defence Initiative and the symbol of our Mediterranean unity. It is our institutional signature. The logo is not just a symbol, it is the visual representation of our vision, mission and values. It unifies and integrates the spirit of the general goal of the Initiative which is to consolidate peace, security and stability in our region. Therefore, it should be present in all of the graphic representations of the Initiative. Like all signatures, the logo must be recognized in an immediate, unequivocal and striking way. The correct use of the logo is mandatory in order to transmit a strong image, such as this forum. Simultaneously, it is intended that this graphical identity can be rapidly and effectively identified with the unit it represents, thus bringing it closer to the citizen. These goals must be respected, bearing in mind that a clear image must comply with certain technical characteristics, namely compact and uniqueness, work well in color and black and white format as well as in several sizes.
The logo designates an object that holds a relationship with another object of similarity so that it is possible to immediately identify it: in the icon it is possible to recognize the model, in the presence of the object, we can recognize it as the one that served as the model for the icon. A recognizable image makes it easier to the target audience to identify it, hence the creation of an iconographic symbol with the representation of the flags, of this union, that has the specific purpose of the target-audience not only identifying the initiative but also to balance the form as it is perceived by its public, making its interpretation faster as well as the alphabetic signs. The elaboration of a good iconographic symbol should be accurate and concise, leaving no room for doubt regarding its objective. In this case, it should lead to the quick identification of the member countries, contributing to intra-figural coherence (obtained from a unit) and inter-figural (obtained from a system products). The Icon a Figurative Brand The Icon was created to represent in the center and the vertical, a blue drop that represents the Mediterranean Sea as well as the transparency and mutual trust among member countries. The flags of the countries involve the drop and are displayed from left to right and from top to bottom in alphabetical order in English, representing ten countries: Algeria, France, Italy, Libya, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco,, Spain and Tunisia, through a formal similarity and shared qualities between them. Once the idea of creating an icon was born, the level of stylization had to be considered. This depended on the environment in which the symbol is integrated and where it will appear as well as the level of the general understanding of the Flags, and the fact of their identification uses common sense. The Symbol a Nominative Brand The designation 5 +5, written in red, identifies the five countries of the North and the five in the South of the Western Mediterranean. The word Defence identifies the Initiative within the 5 +5 Dialogue and it is written in three languages: Arabic, English and French, vertically and in that order.
The Colour The choice of colors for the Icon a Figurative Brand was inspired on the previous historical knowledge of the institutional colors of the flags of the ten participating countries of this union and the perception that the target audience has of these same flags. While representing the drop, it was established that blue is a color that is commonly related to the sea, which conditioned us to choose it because it was already identified by the public. Any change could cause inconsistencies in the association. For each concept, colors are created which constitute the typical chromatic combination. One can, however, create a chromatic combination, formed by colors of this identity, following a study of different combinations, in order to produce a feeling. Therefore, it should be known the effect, provoked by these colors, in the human being, because the end result should be universal. Regarding blue only positive feelings are associated, including sympathy, loyalty, fantasy, divine, masculine and intellectual qualities, merits and, finally, the harmony, the fundamental element. For this Visual Identity we decided to choose three predominant colors from blue variants because they generate feelings of harmony, credibility, merit and seriousness as well as a strong connection to the Mediterranean. In the Symbol - Nominative Brand, red is considered an active, dynamic and stimulating color. 6 The Typography The choice wanted to highlight the sensations that the Perceval family brings. Some are fine and smooth while others are aggressive and strong. In this project, the type should reflect the broadest scope reinforcing it and creating harmony with the produced symbol for the visual identity, but establishing contrasts between different weights of the type (bold, italic and regular). The need to break away from the traditionalist image led to not consider for the project a popular serif type, choosing instead a humanist sans serif type that emphasized the modernity, the delimitation, and that simultaneously transmits will and aggressiveness. The choice for the logo had the additional priority to its perception. The Perceval family is divided into several versions and weights, characterized by its strong formal humanist involvement; it fits a present and future perspective in the context of graphic design.

However and only in exceptional circumstances, it may be used alone. Symbol - Nominative Brand It creates the verbal identity and it is a component of the logo. However it may be used alone. o
