Include job grades) Executive Director: UCT Libraries Deputy Director: Technical Services Manager Digitisation & Digital Services (this post) Digital Curation Officer X2 Digitisation Officer Technical Assistant: Digitisation X4 PURPOSE The main purpose of this position is to enable online access to the digital scholarship of the university. The incumbent is responsible for coordinating, evaluating and optimizing digitization procedures, including capture, presentation, preservation and digital asset management procedures. He/she will lead the strategic development of research-led, scalable and sustainable digital collections through the establishment of production benchmarks and project based objectives. He/she will establish good research data management practices by promoting the use of the services provided by the Digitisation Unit throughout the research data lifecycle. He/she is responsible for the development of programmes to preserve, publish and discover digital collections; supporting technical innovation in open access scholarly publishing in collaboration with Access and Visibility Services. 17 July 2014 Page 1 of 6 HR191

Results / Outcomes (Why) Unique Library and campus research collections are digitized according to best practice. 1 Consults with strategic external partners in the Faculties, eresearch Centre, and others in the Libraries to create policies and apply procedures for the selection and digitization of library and archival materials. Develops and implements policies, workflows and procedures to manage digital conversion programmes. Establishes benchmarks and monitors production against specific objectives. 3 Digital Curation 20 Applies a broad range of principles, practices and procedures in overseeing digital asset management. Develops guidelines for best practice for the curation, preservation and back-up of digital content created in the Libraries and for digital data sets managed by the Libraries. Digital research data is maintained and preserved throughout its lifecycle. The risk of digital obsolescence is significantly mitigated. 2 Collaborates with Library and campus IT to ensure infrastructure support for digital curation processes. Collaborates with the eresearch Centre on the development of research data management standards and practices in the deposit and sharing of data. 3 Scholarly Publishing 20 Collaborates with Access and Visibilty Services to develop and implements strategic plans to support the online publication of open access scholarship. Develops digital library platforms to provide access to digital collections, research data sets and digital assets hosted on the digital library infrastructure. Liaises with web and social networking teams to ensure that online digital content reflects the Libraries brand. Scholarly digital information is published on the Library s web site and visible globally. 17 July 2014 Page 3 of 6 HR191

4 4 Discovery 20 Develops a data registry of research data sets hosted on the digital library infrastructure and elsewhere across the campus. Defines the parameters of content index and search functions across a range of platforms in the digital library infrastructure. Designs and implements workflows and procedures for systems integration across the digital library infrastructure. Ensures the discoverability of digital library collections in library user interfaces and discovery platforms. Defines protocols and procedures to ensure that funder mandates, and legal and ethical obligations are met. Users are able to seamlessly discover digital collections in library interfaces. The long-term value of curated data is enhanced by making it available for further high quality research. Mechanisms are in place to ensure that some material is publicly available, whilst other data may be password protected for legal or ethical reasons. 5 Resource Management: staff 10 Manages staff within the Unit, developing performance standards and ensuring that performance review and performance management are carried out effectively. Implements staff development according to the Libraries work-place skills plan that ensures the development of all staff within the section. 5 6 Project Management 10 Leads cross-sectional teams to manage digital library projects. Develops project proposals, estimating the resources needed to implement project plans. Facilitates communication between staff across the Libraries and other strategic partners across campus, ensuring stakeholders remain informed and engaged. Collaborates with the Metadata Working Group to design and implement metadata specifications for digital library projects, creating application profiles, crosswalking, and applying controlled vocabularies across a wide variety of subject disciplines. Digitisation projects are completed systematically, according to schedules. Project stakeholders are informed of project progress.
