2 The Northwest College Nursing Department reserves the right to change without notice any of the material, information, requirements, regulations, or costs published in this Application Packet. Dear Applicant: Thank you for expressing an interest in the Advanced Placement Level of the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Northwest College. Applicants eligible for advanced placement must be Licensed Practical Nurses who have completed at least one year of working experience as a LPN. Applicants who meet application criteria and are accepted into the program will enter the sophomore year of the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Student Selection Process A completed application packet must be received in the Nursing Department by the first Friday in March in order to be considered for admission to the Nursing Program. Math requirement: MATH 1400 or MATH 1000 are required for application. A higher level of math course may be accepted with approval from your advisor or Director of Nursing. Course completion must be evident on a transcript and indicate a grade of C or above. If the required math course is more than 5 years old, then the student will be required to take a COMPASS test indicating proficiency at MATH 1000 or MATH Lab & Science requirement: Students must satisfactorily complete a science course with a C or higher that includes a lab component within five years of application. Examples of courses that would meet this criteria are; Chemistry (CHEM 1020) with lab, Biology (BIOL 1010) with lab, Microbiology (MOLB 2210) with lab, Anatomy & Physiology I (ZOO 2010) with lab or Anatomy & Physiology II (ZOO 2020) with lab. Pre-requisite courses for entry into the final year of the RN program: Students must satisfactorily complete MATH 1000 Problem Solving or MATH 1400 College Algebra, English I: Introduction to Composition (ENGL 1010), Biology (BIOL 1010) with lab, and Anatomy and Physiology I with lab (ZOO 2010), Anatomy and Physiology II with lab (ZOO 2020), PSYC 1000 General Psychology, with a C or higher. After three attempts to achieve a C or better on pre-requisite or any course within the program of study, students are no longer eligible for admission or re-admission to the program. LPN Entrance test requirement: Students must provide entrance test results that reflect an adjusted individual total score that is at or above the program mean. Students may retake the entrance test a total of two times per application period. If the minimum score is not achieved after two attempts or if the test scores are dated after the deadline, the entrance test requirement will be considered unmet. Scores used for entrance must be obtained within the last two years. GPA requirement: A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) is required for admission requirements. Cumulative GPA is calculated using all courses completed in the program of study for the Associate Degree in Nursing. In addition, a C or better is required on all courses required for the program of study. For your reference the program of study is included on the website. Official transcripts: Two official transcripts must be sent to NWC from other institutions attended: One to the Registrar s Office and one to the Nursing Department. Students are responsible for contacting the Northwest College Registrar s Office to ensure that transcripts from other institutions have been received and to request that a transfer equivalency report be done. The unopened official transcripts from each institution and the official transcript from the Northwest College Registrar (if attended NWC) must be received in the Nursing Department by the application deadline. The Registrar officially evaluates transcripts for transferability of any credits to NWC. Students are responsible for contacting the Registrar s Office to ensure that transcripts have been received and to request that a transfer equivalency report be done. It is important to remember that some courses may meet NWC requirements but may not meet specific Nursing Program requirements. All applicants are required to submit official transcripts to both the NWC Registrar and the NWC Nursing Department from ALL colleges that have been attended by the applicant. 2 P a g e
3 It must be evident in official transcripts that LPN courses taken by the student include pharmacology and dosage calculation content required for medication administration. If this content was integrated into prior nursing course work and not specifically noted on the student transcript, the student can receive credit for the content by presenting a syllabus of integrated course to the Director of Nursing for review. If it is unclear if pharmacology content was adequate, a challenge exam may be required. The exam is offered through the Nursing Department utilizing ATI and the appropriate benchmark score must be achieved. The exam may be taken twice. Letter of Acceptance: If applicant has not attended Northwest College, they first need to apply to Northwest College and be accepted. The letter of acceptance must be turned in as part of the materials required for application. If student has attended Northwest College, the requirement to turn in the letter of acceptance is waived. However, the student is still responsible for delivering an official transcript from Northwest College Registrar to the Nursing Department. Clinical Skill Challenge will be administered by nursing faculty to all incoming sophomore nursing students during the first few days of class each fall. Students are required to show proficiency before moving forward to the clinical setting. Students who have satisfactorily completed all pre-requisite courses and have submitted a complete application to the Nursing Department by the application deadline will be given first priority for admission into the program. Students whose applications are complete but the student is currently enrolled in a pre-requisite course during the spring semester must submit an official transcript reflecting successful completion of the course(s) to the Nursing Department. These applications will be reviewed for placement on an alternate list for acceptance to the program. There is no guarantee that alternates will be accepted into the program. Acceptance is based strictly on qualifications of all applicants as well as availability. Applications that are incomplete or submitted past the application deadline will not be considered. For LPN s that have been out of practice for longer than 6 months: The application process is twotiered. Once the initial application is received and reviewed, you will receive a letter indicating your next steps toward admission into the nursing program. Should you meet the criteria listed above, your letter will direct you to complete a technical requirement and pre-entrance physical form that will require a health provider s signature. The forms are included on the website for your reference. Once the pre-entrance physical and technical requirement forms are received and reviewed, you will receive another letter indicating your formal admission into the nursing program. If you have any questions, or would like to make an appointment with the director, please do not hesitate to call the Nursing Office at (307) P a g e
