1 Information on roles, and responsibilities of organisations, and their contact details, date very quickly. We have therefore given general information on a range of sources of support and further information which we think are well established. New initiatives are likely to be flagged by the organisations which are included. Community Land Unit Part of Highland and Islands Enterprise, CLU provides training, advice and support to any organisation thinking about, or owning community assets (land, buildings, facilities etc) Community Energy Scotland CES aim is to build confidence, resilience and wealth at community level in Scotland through sustainable energy development. Development Trusts Association Scotland DTA Scotland aims to have a successful development trust in every community that wants one by encouraging mutual support among development trusts in Scotland; enabling networking; encouraging growth of new development trusts and representing the interests of development trusts at all levels. Membership 75 for Development Trusts and categories of membership for other organisations and individuals ranging from 60 to 425 Cooperation and Mutuality Scotland Promotes the benefits of co-operative and mutual organisations Has a database of co-ops in Scotland Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) The main membership body for representing voluntary sector views in government policy making. Also has a payroll service and a range of member benefits including Third Force News. Membership starts at 25 (grassroots). Two hours of free legal advice is included in membership package. Scottish Federation of Housing Associations Supports the work of housing associations and co-operatives in Scotland by providing services, advice and good practice guidance Community Recycling Network Scotland Provides information, advice and support to both existing and emerging community recyclers Community Woodlands Association Representative body of Scotland s community woodland groups, helps community woodland groups by providing advice, assistance and information, facilitating networking and training, and representing and promoting community woodlands. Membership categories range from 10 to 100
2 Planning Aid Charity which matches qualified town planner volunteers with community groups for a period of case work support to enable them to engage with planning processes. Also provides training. Firstport Firstport provides support to start up social entrepreneurs and social enterprises throughout Scotland. Key activities: Brokering support through the Exchange service to the social enterprise sector; Support for new and emerging social enterprises and entrepreneurs; Working with UnLtd to distribute funds to new social entrepreneurs in Scotland. Free online registration to access directory (most information registration not required) Senscot Connecting and informing social entrepreneurs; facilitating networks and developing the sector Network members receive weekly bulletin, access to website, use the network to advertise jobs etc Forth Sector Development A support service to social enterprises and emerging social enterprises based on 15 years of running Forth Sector s own social firms. Support includes development sessions, business coaching and mentoring, signposting, study visits and support to replicate Forth Sector s businesses in other areas. "A Business Planning Guide to Developing a Social Enterprise" is a useful free download Aspire to Enterprise A new Scottish Government funded programme providing a range of business support services to ambitious and developing social enterprises in central and lowland Scotland. Organisations must meet the government criteria for social enterprise, be already trading and have a minimum turnover of 60K per annum (this can include funding income) Forth Sector is one of the delivery partners HISEZ Highlands and Islands Social Enterprise Zone HISEZ in the Highlands & Islands region in three main areas of activity: supporting business expert social enterprise support; connecting business helping social enterprises network, learn and share ideas and information; winning business helping social enterprises to win contracts, particularly through public sector procurement, or brokering opportunities for members. CEIS Delivers a range of regeneration and development services, engagement and employability strategies, supporting people who are furthest from the labour market.
3 The Scottish Social Enterprise Coalition A collective voice for social enterprise in Scotland, bringing together social enterprise and its supporters and representing them to government and other institutions. Membership benefits: access to advice, monthly newsletter and policy digest, use of coalition logo, discounts on events. Scaled charges from 60 to 300 The Social Enterprise Academy Provides tailored learning and development for people working in, or towards, a leadership role in the social economy. Delivers courses to the public, private, as well as the social economy sector, supports personal development planning to achieve your potential, helps organisations put together a programme of skills development to support change and growth. Social Firms Scotland Social Firms are a social enterprise that focuses on using commercial businesses to create work integration for severely disadvantaged people. They aim to generate at least 50% of their income from sales of goods and services and are non-profit distributing, with any surplus being shared by employees or re-invested in the business or community in order to meet the social purpose. At least 25% of a Social Firm's workforce is people who are severely disadvantaged in the labour market. Social Firms Scotland supports social firm development, influences policy and research, advises on supportive employment practice, and develops training and events to support and promote the sector. Previously developed by SCVO and funded by EQUAL, which is now closed, but the site may still be useful. 4 Scottish Government Rural Development Programme The SRDP is a 1.6 billion programme of economic, environmental and social measures designed to develop rural Scotland over the next six years. Individuals and groups may seek support to help deliver the Government's strategic objectives in rural Scotland. RIAS Scottish Community Projects Fund to help organisations conduct feasibility studies for building projects Investing in Ideas (Big Lottery) Up to 10k to enable organisations to conduct preparatory work for proposals to the Big Lottery (may change 2009 onwards) Awards for All (Big Lottery) Award grants of between 500 and 10,000 for people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, and projects that promote education, the environment and health in the local community. Social Investment Scotland SIS provides loan finance and business support to social economy organisations who are unable to raise any or all of the loan finance they need from normal commercial sources. Organisations may apply to SIS for a loan provided their activities have a strong social purpose which benefits disadvantaged or vulnerable groups. Potential SIS borrowers may or may not have charitable status. UnLtd UnLtd is a charity which supports social entrepreneurs by providing a complete package of funding and support, to help these individuals make their ideas a reality. Note Unltd funds individuals or groups of individuals, not charitable organisations. Has an online tool to quickly check your eligibility Forward Scotland Aims to champion innovative approaches to sustainable development, by initiating and piloting practical demonstration projects, carrying out original and challenging research, enhancing learning and stimulating debate, influencing policy and creating tools for change. Forward Scotland administers the application, assessment and distribution of grants on behalf of landfill operator Viridor Waste Management. This scheme offers grants from the Landfill Communities Fund for community projects in the vicinity of its landfill sites ie. East Lothian extending to Edinburgh and Scottish Borders and North and South Lanarkshire.
