Petroc s Distance learning Courses are based around workbooks with the option of online assessments, all with course materials you can keep for future reference. A tutor will be allocated to you to help you work through your course, support you and give you feedback on your work. You need to be able to put aside 2-3 hours study per week. What about costs? All these PETROC Distance Learning courses are FREE*. How long? Our Distance Learning courses usually take from 3-5 months to complete. Who can enrol? 3 Certificate in Mental Health Awareness Mental health matters, like dementia, are becoming more and more important in the care industry. This course is designed to give you a thorough understanding of the issues that matter today. It s also really valuable if you simply want to know more about mental health - perhaps because you are caring for an elderly relative, for example. The course covers three topics, each with its own workbook: 1. Understanding mental health awareness. This workbook takes you through the legal frameworks which make sure high quality care is provided for service users with mental health disorders. You will explore stress, anxiety and phobias as mental health conditions. 2. Understanding other mental health conditions. will learn about the causes of depression, postnatal depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and eating disorders. How do these mental health disorders affect individuals, and family and friends? You will explore treatments, medical interventions and understand local resources. 3. Understanding dementia and mental health. You will learn about dementia and the physiological factors which affect people who have been diagnosed with dementia. You will consider common types of dementia and their causes, and how service users experience dementia. Certificate in Nutrition and Health If you are working, or want to work, in areas such as sport and recreation, exercise and fitness, hospitality, catering or healthcare, this nationally accredited qualification is for you. The course gives you the understanding of nutrition and health you ll need in your role. It s a great basis for progressing to other qualifications in any of these subject areas. The course will take you through two workbooks: 1. Principles of healthy eating and nutritional needs of individuals. How does diet affect health? You will learn how the five food groups contribute to a healthy diet and the roles of nutrients in food. You will study how nutritional needs change with age and the special dietary requirements of vegetarians. You ll learn how allergies and even certain religious beliefs can be barriers to a healthy diet. 2. Planning diets for health and weight management and understanding eating disorders. Here, you ll learn about food labelling and additives. You ll look at the risks of weight management and how to plan a weight management programme. The course teaches you about eating disorders too and how to find out information about them, as well as the connections between food and feelings 3

4 Certificate in Principles of Working with Individuals with Learning Disabilities LAO Level 2 Certificate Working with people with learning difficulties can be very rewarding. This worthwhile and inspiring course covers a wide range of topics from supporting individuals to protection and positive risk-taking. Working through two workbooks, you will study: 1. Positive and enabling support for people with learning disabilities What does learning disability mean? How do the attitudes of others affect individuals who have learning disabilities? The unit introduces themes including human rights, advocacy and empowerment and the vital role of good communication. You ll learn about the skills and support needed to implement personalised provision. The importance of positive risk-taking and how to balance risk-taking with duty of care. You ll also learn about the safeguarding individuals from different types of abuse. What are the signs and symptoms? When are individuals most vulnerable and if abuse is suspected, what should be done? 2. Supporting individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare and awareness of autistic spectrum conditions. Discover how to help individuals with a learning disability to access healthcare. The course covers legislation, barriers to healthcare services and the functions of healthcare services. You ll also learn about autistic spectrum conditions and explore important themes like communication, behaviour and person-centred support. 4

5 Certificate in Understanding End of Life Care Whether you are studying this to support your career or because the subject is relevant to you personally, this course takes you through this difficult and emotive subject in a professional and supportive way. It is the industry standard in this subject for those working in the Care Industry, with two modules. 1. Working in end of life care, managing pain, discomfort and dementia. It is a life-long condition, but with good management of blood sugar levels, sufferers can lead normal healthy lives. This nationally accredited qualification aims to give you a good understanding of the different types of diabetes. Over two modules, it covers prevention and early control of type 2 diabetes, and helps you develop an understanding of diabetes diagnosis and initial care. 1. Understand diabetes and the importance of prevention and early intervention for type 2 diabetes. You ll learn how glucose and insulin function in the body, how different types of diabetes occur and the risk factors associated with type 2 diabetes. You will also learn how the onset of type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. 2. Understand the initial care, treatment and management of diabetes. You ll study how diabetes can impact on individual and how the condition can be managed and monitored. You ll learn how to work with individuals to manage diabetes and understand the ongoing care and treatment recommended to control blood glucose levels and prevent complications. The social impact of diabetes is covered too. Certificate in the Principles of Dementia Care Dementia is a highly topical subject, and a major social challenge. This nationally accredited qualification is designed to give you an excellent grounding in Dementia. Through three workbooks, the course covers issues including communication, medication and activities for people with Dementia. 1. Understanding dementia and the person-centred approach to administering medication. What is dementia? This workbook will introduce you to the different forms of dementia and their causes and medication requirements. Through person-centred care, you will learn how to support and help an individual with dementia to experience well-being. 2. Understand the factors that can influence communication and behaviour in the context of dementia. Dementia can lead to challenging behaviour. You ll learn how to respond, and about the methods of communication to enhance positive interaction. 3. Understand equality, diversity and inclusion and the benefits of engaging in activities in social care. As well as social issues of Dementia, you ll learn about how activities can enhance the physical, mental and social well-being of indivuduals with dementia in a range of settings. 7

8 Certificate in Understanding the Safe Handling of Medicines This nationally accredited qualification is valuable if you are considering a career in any part of healthcare or the caring professions. The four workbooks cover a wide range of information, best practice and legislation. 1. Understanding medication and prescriptions. Learn about the different types of medication and how they are classified; legislation and guidelines; the roles of staff; and how to access information. 2. Supply, storage and disposal of medication. How should the medication be prescribed and supplied?
