We need your suggestions for naming the newsletter. Send your suggestions to patricia.a.helland@vanderbilt.edu. The person submitting the winning name will be awarded a special prize. ** ACPA Educational program submission is now open! We encourage you to browse the ACPA Atlanta 2008 site at to learn more about the convention theme, professional outcomes, sponsorship opportunities and... Atlanta! ** NASPA Annual Conference programming submissions website is now open. The 2008 Conference Committee encourages NASPA members to submit program proposals for Pre-Conference Workshops, Poster Sessions, and General Interest Sessions. Go to to find more information on the proposal submission process. ** As we prepare for a new era at Vanderbilt beginning with the Commons, the Residence Life and Residential Education Department has restructured for the present and future. Terms that you may not be familiar with are Sr. Preceptor, Preceptor, and Residence Life Coordinator (RLC). The Sr. Preceptor is the same management level as an Associate Director, the Preceptor is the same management level as the Assistant Director, and the RLC is a new entry professional live-in position. At our graduate staff level, we will have four (4) Graduate Hall Directors. Three of these positions will report to an Associate Director or Sr. Preceptor, with one reporting to the central Residence Life Office. Our student staff of RAs and HRS continue to serve as our resource persons that live in the residence halls with our students. For the academic year we will have seven (7) RLCs, one in each of the following areas: Kissam, Alumni Lawn, Towers, Branscomb, and Highland Quad. The Commons will have two RLCs. The RLCs will be the first line of contact in our area daily operations, supervision of the RAs/HRs, and crisis response. The Assistant Director positions has been changed to an entry level mid-management position. The AD staff will supervise the RLCs and have management authority over multiple residential areas or one large residential area. The Associate Directors and Sr. Preceptor will operate as Associate Directors have for the past academic year. We are excited about these changes and look forward to collaborating with you on future projects to serve our Vanderbilt Community.
2 CONGRATULATIONS DOS congratulates Toi Batson, Housing Facilities, and her husband on the birth of their son Thomas who was born on June 10. All the best to Carolyn Land who recently became engaged to Dave Page. A September wedding is planned. A big congrats to Mona Hicks and Daniel Swinton who passed their comprehensive exams this summer. They are scheduled to received their Ed.D. diplomas at Vanderbilt s graduation next May. All the best as they complete their final year in the Department of Leadership, Policy and Organizations. Congratulations also to Tina Smith who successfully defended her dissertation proposal this summer. Two special wishes for Mark Dalhouse and his wife Mary Ellen on the birth of their twin boys who arrived at 9 pm on Friday, August 10. Teddy was 7 lbs and Braden was 5 lbs 4 oz. A Hint of Things to Come: Strategic Management Plan This year, DOS will develop a strategic management plan to help us align better with our institutional mission. As we move toward the opening of The Commons, the first phase of the College Hall Program, we must be sure to direct our energies, efforts and resources to support the academic mission of the University. What can we do to promote student learning, facilitate student-faculty interaction, and connect experiential learning to the curriculum? This year we will develop answers to this question, create a shared understanding of these answers, and translate the answers into an organizational strategy with concrete objectives, measures, targets and initiatives. To support this effort, we have taken two major steps. We created an Office of Special Initiatives and Assessment staffed by Pat Helland, Assistant Dean; Mona Hicks, Senior Director for Assessment; and Brian Heuser, research associate. We also have contracted with Eduventures, a higher education consulting firm, and will participate in a student affairs learning collaborative on strategic management, assessment and student learning outcomes with a consortium of research universities. So, be sure to check out the University mission statement at the following website address: You'll be hearing more soon - Mark Bandas
