2 HIGHER EDUCATION COMMISSION English Language Teaching Reforms (ELTR) Phase II LI Division, Islamabad Short Term CALL Course for One Week (Beginners) Introduction to the one week courses The Computer-Assisted Language Learning one-week course has been designed at two levels, and for the instructor to decide on the course depends on a couple of factors: a) the aptitude level of the participants b) the technology in the language laboratory. Short One-Week Course for Beginners This short one-week course of 36 hours is specifically designed to address the needs of teachers who are keen to introduce computer-assisted language learning in their classrooms. This course is for beginners who would learn the basics of technology that will complement the objectives of the National/institutional curriculum to enhance language learning skills of their students. Objectives After completing the course the participant will be able to introduce participants to CALL, its potential use and significance in Pakistani English language classrooms demonstrate understanding of the CALL paradigm search the web effectively for personal and professional development analyze existing materials that cater diverse needs of learners and teachers design lesson plans with a specific learning objective using the multimedia interface evaluate CALL needs in relation to syllabus requirements, and student abilities
3 Eligibility College and university teachers of English Possessing basic knowledge of computers and internet Pre- and post-course evaluations - Self-evaluation forms to be filled in by participants Instructor evaluation Criteria developed and attached Course Module Content Hours Skill evaluation of computer proficiency Introduction to the course Orientation to CALL Introduction to Refreshing computer skills 36 hours Computer and CALL A. Word processing (E.g. Format of document, Inserting images and audios, Letter wizard, Reviewing documents by tracking changes, Spell/Grammar check, etc.) B. Multimedia (E.g. Introduction to PowerPoint, Slide designs, Templates, Animations, etc.) C. Windows (E.g. Explorer, Folder management, Data storage management, Media player, Accessories) D. Web browsing (E.g. Introduction to different browsers, Exploring websites and search engines for CALL, Creating accounts, forum, blogs, ing, etc.) Perceiving CALL: What CALL is what it isn t?
4 Issues in implementation Developments in CALL (Behaviouristic to Communicative CALL); theoretical underpinning to be following by relevant reading material Exploring the resource world: Online communities, Accessible softwares of English language development (participants to be exposed to a minimum of two softwares, e.g. Oxford Practice Grammar, Step Ahead, electronic dictionaries) Preparing interactive hyperlinked activities on the multimedia mode. To be followed by an evaluation of the prepared activity and how it can be embedded in the existing syllabus. Evaluating authenticity and suitability of CALL materials Creation of an online group on the web (E.g. Wikispaces, Googlegroups, Facebook, etc.) Suggested readings Evaluation criteria for the Instructor: 1. Course participation a. Participation in activities: 10% b. Developing language-based activities 15% c. Best three presentations 15% 2. Projects a. Contents 10% b. Clarity of objectives 10%
