8 Eight steps to TAFE swsi XXXX It s easy to enrol and commence a course at Tafe SWSi. Just follow our simple guide below. STEP ONE Decide on your course Decide which course you would like to do by: reading this guide and visiting our website SWSi.edu.au, giving us a call on 13 SWSi ( ) or visiting one of our colleges. STEP TWO Check your course requirements Check that you meet the entry requirements for the course you want to take and make sure you have transcripts of any qualifications you have completed in the past. STEP THREE Unique Student Identifier Make sure you have a Unique Student Identifier (USI). All students participating in Nationally Recognised Training in Australia will need to have a USI. You can create your own USI online by visiting usi.gov.au STEP FOUR Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) If you have any qualifications and experience related to the course you want to take, make sure you ask us about RPL (see page 19). 5

9 STEP SIX - in person or online If your course has this symbol, you will need to enrol in person at one of our colleges. Contact us on 13 SWSi ( ) or visit SWSi.edu.au to find out what days and times you can enrol. If your course has this symbol, you can enrol online anytime. STEP SEVEN Pay for your course When you enrol you need to pay for your course, or show that you are eligible for an exemption or concession on fees. Please note, you are not fully enrolled until you have paid your fees, so remember to visit a college or complete your payment online. 10 Which qualification is right for you? XXXX At TAFE SWSi we offer many different courses, including nationally accredited qualifications from certificates to advanced diplomas and degrees. You can choose from a number of entry-level options to more advanced qualifications, depending on the career you want to pursue and the skills, work experience or qualifications you have already gained. The majority of TAFE courses are accredited under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). The AQF regulates the quality of all Australian qualifications and is the nationally recognised standard for education and training in Australia. For more information visit the Australian Qualifications Framework website at I started studying science at university but there was really too much theory and not enough practical work. At TAFE SWSi I found a more hands-on course which provided the right balance between theory and practice. 14 Choose the right pathway You can go to TAFE SWSi while you re still at school, go straight from school to TAFE SWSi or from TAFE SWSi to higher education. Combining your school study with vocational study at TAFE SWSi With TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training (TVET) you can undertake a vocational course at TAFE SWSi as part of your HSC and get a head start in a vocation or trade. For more information, visit or ask for a copy of the TVET guide at a TAFE SWSi Customer Service Centre. Why choose TVET? TVET can give you: an academic transcript that counts towards any TAFE study you want to do after school or a full certificate upon successful completion of your course TAFE study that counts towards your HSC results and in some cases, towards your ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) a statement of attainment, a certificate I or II or, in some areas (such as health, financial services and aged care), a certificate III a head start on post-school study and employment hands-on training. What s so good about studying a TVET course? TVET is free if you attend a government high school, so you can complete your entry-level vocational training free of charge! If you attend a non-government high school, you may be eligible for a subsidised place (ask your school for more information) all your equipment, materials, protective clothing and texts are provided free by TAFE SWSi you can try out different vocational areas to help you decide what you d like to do after school you ll be trained in an adult environment by highly skilled, industry-specialist teachers who are dedicated to helping you get into an exciting career you get hands-on experience in wellequipped workshops and facilities that meet industry training standards and are used by trade students you can study things that your school doesn t teach, at a place that isn t school! Did you know you can start an apprenticeship or traineeship while you re still at school? You can apply in Year 10 or early in Year 11 for a School-Based Apprenticeship (SBA) or a School- Based Traineeship (SBT). This allows you to work part-time and study industry skills at TAFE SWSi while you study for your HSC. The SBA is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship, and you will continue full-time as a second year apprentice after you leave school. Both the SBA and SBT give you a certificate of proficiency in your chosen field, which counts towards further study and employment. For more information, call us on 13 SWSi or visit 11

15 Career and Study Guide 2016 If you don t have an ATAR, our courses, including HSC studies and the TAFE Tertiary Preparation, provide a means of entry into university or higher education. HSC studies allow you to fast-track your HSC and gain an ATAR while the Tertiary Preparation provides you with a tertiary entrance score which can be converted to an ATAR. TAFE SWSi offers courses that provide a pathway into degrees with a range of universities. This means that once completed, some selected TAFE courses can be credited towards higher education study, so you may be able to reduce the time it takes to complete a degree. Studying to up-skill or prepare for a new career Whether you're interested in kickstarting your career, breaking into a new industry or simply building on existing skills, we can help you get started. You can study a range of qualifications part-time, full-time, or at a pace that suits you with online learning. If you are already in the workforce, you may be able to have your previous learning and experience credited through Recognition of Prior Learning (see page 19). Going from school to TAFE SWSi Whether you re looking to develop your skills or start your career, TAFE SWSi can provide you with a world of opportunity. Going from TAFE to University and Higher Education If you want to move into higher education or you want to improve your ATAR to get into the course of your choice, we can provide you with a pathway to university and higher education. The of Building Design gave me a great perspective and understanding of the industry. Completing the course has opened up a pathway to better qualifications and career opportunities. 16 Apprenticeships and traineeships XXXX TAFE SWSi provides training for more apprentices than any other Registered Training Organisation in NSW.* Combine work and study in a way that works for you Apprenticeships and traineeships are a great way to gain industry training while completing your qualification. What is an apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is a combination of work and structured training that leads to a nationally recognised trade qualification. Apprenticeships generally last for four years and cover a range of areas such as automotive, commercial cookery, plumbing and hairdressing. TAFE SWSi offers a range of apprenticeships. Some of these include: aeroskills avionics automotive electrical, refinishing (painting technology), body repair (cars and heavy vehicles) carpentry, cabinetmaking & joinery, civil construction chef, pastry chef (patisserie) electrician, appliance servicing, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanic, ESI-electrical lines worker, engineering and mechanical engineering hairdressing and beauty therapy retail nursery, landscape construction. What is a traineeship? A traineeship combines work and training in a formal training contract between a trainee and an employer and is a nationally recognised qualification. TAFE SWSi will work with the employer throughout the traineeship and will develop an individual training plan for the trainee. In most cases we provide a range of delivery options including on-the-job, off-the-job and on-line training, depending on the qualification. Some of the traineeships TAFE SWSi offers are in: aged care business administration disability fashion design and technology fitness - fitness instructor or personal trainer hospitality landscaping. Student Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships The School Based Apprenticeship (SBA) is equivalent to the first year of a full-time apprenticeship and you will continue full-time as a second year apprentice after you leave school. Both the SBA and School Based Traineeship (SBT) give you a certificate of proficiency in your chosen field, which counts towards further study and employment. These include pre-apprenticeships, pre-employment and pre-vocational courses. These courses provide introductory skills designed to help you gain entry into an apprenticeship or traineeship in a particular area. They also give you the opportunity to experience an area of study and decide if it s right for you. To enrol at TAFE SWSi as a trainee or apprentice, you need to be working with an employer who has agreed to take you on as an apprentice or trainee. This must be a formal agreement you must have signed a training contract and be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre. 18 Degrees and higher education XXXX Go from a diploma or advanced diploma to a degree all in the supportive environment of TAFE SWSi. Get your degree through TAFE SWSi At TAFE SWSi we offer higher education programs through TAFE NSW Higher Education and partnerships with universities including Federation University Australia, Charles Sturt University and the University of Canberra. With a degree through TAFE SWSi you can: continue to study in the supportive TAFE environment move seamlessly from vocational training to higher education study in an environment that focuses on practical training study in a small class where you know you will be more than just a number. Degree programs with Federation University Australia TAFE SWSi offers degrees in partnership with Federation University Australia. Depending on the vocational course you complete and your work experience, you will get up to two years off the degree you choose to do. Bachelor of Applied Management The Bachelor of Applied Management offered at TAFE SWSi s College combines essential skills in developing and evolving an organisation with the practical planning, marketing, finance and people skills required to manage the complexities of a modern business. Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) The Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), offered at TAFE SWSi s College is a comprehensive program to provide you with the skills you need to be a leader in commerce and business. 15

19 Continuing onto a university degree after a diploma with TAFE SWSi was so easy and the staff were all extremely supportive... completing my Bachelor of IT through TAFE SWSi allowed me to receive credit for my diploma course, so I will graduate in two years instead of three. These programs are ideal if you want to get recognition for your supervisory or management experience and take the next step in your career. Bachelor of Information Technology with University of Canberra The Bachelor of Information Technology offered through the University of Canberra focuses on the systems development aspects of the information technology profession. The course is designed to deliver the two final years of the degree to relevant TAFE SWSi diploma graduates. The course has professional level accreditation by the Australian Computer Society. 20 Fast-track your training TAFE SWSi offers more than 150 intensive short courses in a range of industry areas. As well as taking an intensive short course, you can reduce the time you spend studying and get into work more quickly by: becoming an apprentice or trainee so you can study while you work taking a course that has flexible delivery, so that you can study in the evenings or online only studying units for the specific skills you need, such as: Food Safety, Work, Health and Safety, First Aid or Construction, Safety White or Blue cards using your TAFE SWSi qualifications to apply for advanced standing and credit towards a diploma or degree choosing alternative pathways into a job, such as the one year, non-trade, fast-track hairdressing course. and Workload When you are thinking about a TAFE SWSi course, it s important to know how long you will spend in the classroom and how much study you will be expected to do at home. Full-time If you study full-time, you will study at least two units per semester and will be in the classroom for at least 18 hours a week. The actual number of hours and days per week you need to attend will depend on the units you take each semester. You will receive a personal timetable when you enrol. You may also be expected to study and do assessment tasks outside the classroom. Part-time If you study part-time you will be taking at least one unit of competency and will be in the classroom for two to three hours per week, per unit. Part-time courses may be available during the day or in the evening, so you can study around part-time and even full-time work. Flexible/blended If you study a flexible or blended course you will sometimes be in the classroom and sometimes learn through online, distance (correspondence) or workplace learning. How much of the course is delivered in the classroom varies from course to course. 17

22 Get the credit you deserve You can receive recognition for the skills and knowledge you have gained in the workplace or through previous study. Study Fee-Free! Fee-Free Scholarships are now available. The NSW Government s Smart and Fee-Free Scholarships mean that you can get the skills you need to get the job you want and your course fees are covered! Commencing 1 July 2015, Fee-Free Scholarships are designed to help people years old who are eligible for concession fees to undertake training under Smart and. To find out if you are eligible visit SWSi.edu.au or 13 SWSi ( ). What is RPL? Valuable work and life experience, on the job training and any courses you have previously taken, including overseas qualifications, can all count towards RPL. How does RPL work? You will be assessed on your knowledge and experience, which will be counted towards your course or qualification. That means you might not have to do all of the units in a course, allowing you to finish your qualification sooner! You will be required to provide evidence of your experience and to take part in an interview with a trained assessor. If you are eligible for recognition of one or more units of competency, you ll be able to move on with completing your course. How do I apply? TAFE SWSi is a leader in Indigenous education and our courses attract students from all over Australia. We can help you choose the right course and career pathway, provide help with enrolment, offer advice on how to apply for a fee exemption and scholarships, as well as provide mentoring to support you throughout your course. TAFE SWSi also provides an Indigenous recruitment and employment service for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people. Disability support services TAFE SWSi has a team of professional Disability Teacher Consultants who can support and assist current and future students with disabilities to reach their education and training goals. Childcare Services, and Wetherill Park Colleges have childcare centres, open Monday to Friday. Libraries TAFE SWSi colleges have libraries with books, audio-visual and e-resources to support you throughout your course. You can also use computers and printers and study spaces for individual or group work. 22

26 How do you enrol? XXXX It s easy to enrol in a TAFE SWSi course, either online or in person. Online Follow the enrolment instructions and complete your enrolment by paying the course fee. Specific course fees are listed against each course. Many courses and students are eligible for subsidised training, concessions or exemptions from the course fee. For more information about 2016 fees visit SWSi.edu.au The students below are required to attend a college with documentation to confirm their eligibility for study and to determine their fees. Applicants for concessions and exemptions Temporary visa holders Apprentices and trainees (you must provide proof of your apprenticeship or traineeship) Non-NSW residents who work in NSW If you need to attend an information session, details will be provided upon completion of your registration. After payment has been made you will be provided with confirmation of your enrolment and further instructions. If you can t enrol online, contact us 13 SWSi ( ) and we can help. In person For some courses you will need to enrol at the college where your chosen course will run. Visit SWSi.edu.au or call 13 SWSi ( ) to confirm the date and time you need to enrol. What to bring to enrolment You will need to bring the following to enrolment: Photo proof of identity (such as a driver s licence or passport). Unique student identifier (USI). You need a USI to enrol. Your USI links to an online account that contains all your training records and results (transcripts). You can create your own USI online at usi.gov.au. Proof of your citizenship, residency or visa status (if you were not born in Australia), and any documentation about your visa. Copies of your highest school qualification, and/ or any other academic transcripts for courses you have previously undertaken (including courses you did not complete). This will help us place you in the right course. A debit card, credit card (Visa or Mastercard), personal/bank cheque or money order so that you can pay for your course. TAFE SWSi is unable to accept cash payments. Any documentation that proves that you are eligible for a concession or exemption fee. Visit for details. 28 Tafe Nsw course fees for 2016 A fee applies for most TAFE NSW courses and must be paid when you enrol. The amount you pay depends on the type of course you study, and on your personal circumstances. Even if you are entitled to an exemption you may be required to pay additional course related charges for purchase of materials and/or equipment. For specific conditions and more information on exemptions please visit smartandskilled/prices_fees.html Government subsidised courses Under Smart and, the NSW Government is targeting funding towards the skills that are needed for jobs and economic growth. Fee-Free Scholarships Students who are years old and are eligible for concession fees may also be eligible for a Fee-Free Scholarship. This means the cost of your course fees will be covered. Concession fees Conditions and fees for government subsidised courses listed in this guide are indicative of 2015 prices. All fees are subject to change for Fees for 2016 are expected to be available from November For up-to-date fee information visit SWSi.edu.au or au/smartandskilled In 2015, concession fees per TAFE NSW qualification were set as a flat fee for the qualification level. Students who are eligible for a concession fee include: Commonwealth welfare recipients A dependent child, spouse or partner of a Commonwealth welfare recipient concession fees per qualification level Qualification level Foundation course Concession fee ($) $80 I $120 II $160 and IV and Advanced $240 No concession available Exemptions If you are eligible for an exemption, you will not need to pay any fee for your qualification. Students who are eligible for a fee exemption include: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying at any level students with a disability who are entitled to one fee exempt course per calendar year and must pay a concession fee for any further courses up to certificate IV level in the same year A dependent child, spouse or partner of a recipient of a Disability Support Pension, who are entitled to one fee exempt course per calendar year and must pay a concession fee for any further courses up to certificate IV in the same year. As part of Smart and, the NSW Government released the 2015 NSW Skills List, which set out priority areas for training. The qualifications on this list will receive government subsidies to make sure training priorities match the needs of the economy. A new skills list is expected for The 2016 NSW Skills List will include qualifications that attract a government subsidy, plus their prices and fees. If you enrol in a course on the 2016 NSW Skills List and you are eligible, you will pay a fee set by the NSW Government. The current 2015 NSW Skills List covers: certificate ll to advanced diploma qualifications select certificate l foundation skills courses all apprenticeships and selected traineeships part qualifications for key groups and sectors. To view the current skills list and the expected 2016 NSW Skills List and fees visit: smartandskilled Eligibility for access to government subsidised training with TAFE NSW To be eligible for a place in a government subsidised course you must be: an Australian citizen, permanent resident or humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen 25

29 OR aged 15 years or older no longer at school living or working in NSW registered as a NSW apprentice or new entrant trainee. In addition, if you want to enrol in a government subsidised place in a certificate III or below, you must not have completed a certificate IV or above in any area. Are you an apprentice or trainee? Apprentice fees were capped at $2,000 for students commencing in New fees for 2016 are expected to be released in November, Any student registered as a NSW apprentice or new entrant trainee will be eligible for government subsidised training, regardless of other qualifications held or previous qualifications completed. What if the qualification you want to undertake is not on the 2016 NSW Skills List or you are not eligible for a government subsidised place? There may be an equivalent course listed on the 2016 NSW Skills List in which you can enrol. Call us on 13 SWSi ( ) to find out about equivalent courses on offer. If you choose to enrol in a course that is not on the 2016 Skills List or you are not eligible for a government subsidised place, you may have the option to enrol in a full-fee version of the selected course. If the course is a diploma or advanced diploma you may be eligible to apply for VET FEE-HELP. For more information about VET FEE-HELP visit smartandskilled/vet_fee_help.html Government help for study expenses When you study at TAFE, you may be eligible for Centrelink benefits such as Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance. Check with Centrelink to find out what you can claim. You may also be able to claim student travel concessions on public transport - call us on 13 SWSi ( ) to find out more. Vet fee-help loans VET FEE-HELP loans are available to eligible students in diploma or above qualifications. You are eligible for VET FEE-HELP if you: are an Australian Citizen or Permanent Humanitarian Visa Holder living in Australia for the duration of the unit of study are studying a full-time course with an approved provider are studying an eligible full-fee course at level or above have not borrowed more than the maximum amount (currently $96,000). Permanent residents and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for VET FEE-HELP Loans. VET FEE-HELP is available for the majority of full-fee diploma and advanced diploma level courses. Students in NSW Government subsidised training places studying selected certificate IV courses may also be eligible for a loan. The selected certificate IV qualifications that are eligible for VET FEE-HELP are: CHC40312: IV in Disability CHC40108: IV in Aged Care AHC40110: IV in Agriculture ICA40411: IV in Information Technology (Networking) SIT40212: IV in Travel and Tourism. FEE-HELP The Australian government provides assistance to higher education students through the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). FEE-HELP is a student loan scheme provided by the Australian government and is available to eligible fee paying students to pay all or part of their tuition fees. For eligible fee-for-service courses, FEE-HELP provides you with the option of: deferring all of your tuition fees; or paying some of your tuition fees upfront and deferring the balance. There is a loan fee of 25% for FEE-HELP loans for all undergraduate courses.
