WG Release Notes New Features in Release 6.0 Far-end camera control has been added for H.320 point-to-point calls. The H.323 protocol (IP) is available on systems running the Windows NT operating system. The option to use the H.323 protocol (IP) only is available for model 5040 systems. This configuration will not require the installation of an ISDN or DDM card. Limitations The H.323 protocol will operate on single-processor, single-bus systems only. It is not designed for dual- processor or dual-bus configurations. The minimum processor speed for using AppsView Release 6.0 is 300 MHz. The Canon VC-C1 camera is not supported with AppsView Release 6.0. The WG500 ATM model is not supported in Release 6.0 Video Notices Nothing Displayed on Monitor Nothing appears on monitor when system is powered on. If your WG500 is not displaying anything on the monitor, and the power is turned on, the monitor may have a different Input Source selected. On the monitor s front control panel, press the Input Select button until RGB appears in the upper right corner of the monitor. Or on the monitor s remote control, press the Input button until RGB appears in the upper right corner of the monitor. Video will then appear. Page 1 of 9
Rarely, the screen saver comes up while in a call The screen saver may come up while the system is in a call. Either disable the system s screen saver, or keep the window focus on one of the AppsView windows. Audio Notices General Audio Note: Various endpoints and videoconferencing systems process audio algorithms differently and utilize different timing methods. These differences can cause intermittent audio irregularities at the beginning or end of a call, which should be ignored. Unable to hear audio in a call Cannot hear remote audio while in a call. If your audio is muted when you place a call, it will cause the remote audio to be muted, as well. Both systems need to un-mute their audio, then the call can proceed normally. The microphone level is incorrect The audio coming from the microphone is either too loud or too soft. The microphone output can be adjusted via the slider bar on the Audio tab of the Control Interface (accessible from the Tools menu). However, when AppsView is restarted the microphone gain will be return to the default level. Use the procedure described below to change the default setting. 1. Open the following files in Notepad: c:\program Files\Appsview\Program\vcp_ntsc.ini c:\program Files\Appsview\Program\vcpcntsc.ini c:\program Files\Appsview\Program\vcp_pal.ini c:\program Files\Appsview\Program\vcpcpal.ini 2. Locate the [VCP] section in each file and add the line vcx_dwaudencvolume as shown: [VCP] vcx_dwaudencvolume=93 3. Save and close all four files. 4. Open file c:\program Files\AppsView\Program\vtel.ini in Notepad: 5. Locate the [MXV Settings] section and add the line InputGainMic as shown below: [MXV Settings] InputGainMic=93 The value 93 can be adjusted to any value up to 255. However, careful testing should be performed by increasing the value slowly and checking for echo or feedback. Connectivity Notices Page 2 of 9
Joining an MCU Conference Call When joining an H.320 T.120 multiway conference call in an MCU, you will be presented with a dialog box asking you which conference you want to join. The list will only include the one conference that you are attempting to join. Be sure that it is selected and click OK. Clearing the Data Channel in a SmartLink MCS Conference When a multiway conference is complete, a SmartLink MCS call will need to be closed in order to clear the data channel and allow the next multiway conference to utilize NetMeeting. System Monitor Data with Restricted Calls The AppsView System Monitor may display incorrect data during a restricted mode videoconference (i.e., line rates of 2x56, etc.). NetMeeting Notices NetMeeting Configuration It is important that you complete the NetMeeting configuration screens that are presented the first time that AppsView opens. Without proper configuration, NetMeeting cannot provide important data collaboration features for your WG500 system. Refer to Chapter 6 of the WG500 Installation Guide for step-by-step instructions on configuring NetMeeting. AppsView - Unable to Start Data Subsystem message appears on screen When using NetMeeting, the message AppsView - Unable to Start Data Subsytem appears. Occasionally, when configuring NetMeeting for the first time, a timing conflict will cause a data subsystem timeout. Should this occur, click OK to clear the dialog box, and finish configuring your system. Then close and re-open AppsView. The data subsystem will now be fully functional. Experiencing difficulties with application sharing Application sharing not functioning properly when using NetMeeting. Microsoft NetMeeting may lose the ability to share applications after several WG500 calls have been placed. This is due to a known NetMeeting problem that is being addressed by Microsoft. If this occurs, close both the AppsView application and the NetMeeting, and other applications and restart your PC. Rarely, a Windows 95 or Windows NT system will be unable to share applications with a Windows 98 system. Simply disconnect the call and redial to re-establish a new NetMeeting connection. Sharing Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer will result in all other subsequent applications being shared with the remote site. Unwanted results may follow. VTEL recommends that you do not attempt to share either Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. Page 3 of 9
Share menu item not available No share menu is visible after opening an application. During a NetMeeting connection, a new menu item ( Share ) appears on all menus of all applications that you open. Depending on your desktop settings and screen resolution, the Share menu item may not be visible. You can either: Resize the application window, if possible, Use the Application Sharing button from your AppsView toolbar, or Use the Share menu function from within NetMeeting. NetMeeting fails with a SmartLink MCU conference NetMeeting fails during a SmartLink MCU connection. NetMeeting may have intermittent failures during a SmartLink MCU connection. It is recommended that you do not Collaborate during an MCU conference, however you may use the Share feature. If NetMeeting does fail, you will need to end the call and shut down AppsView. You may then restart AppsView and place the call again. Cancel button in the File Send dialog box does not work reliably The Cancel button that appears in the File Send dialog box may does not work consistently. The file will usually continue to be sent until completion. However, it will delete any other files that are waiting to be sent. For more reliable results, use the Cancel feature from within NetMeeting. NetMeeting will not connect during H.323 calls Occasionally during H.323 (LAN) calls, NetMeeting will not connect to the remote site. The message Party did not accept call appears. Move your AppsView video window in front of the message and proceed normally with the videoconference. If data sharing is needed, disconnect the call and dial again. There are no applications listed when invoking application sharing If NetMeeting was not configured with application sharing when AppsView is installed on an NT system, AppsView will not allow application sharing even though the Application Sharing button is enabled. Perform the following steps: 1. Insure that the AppsView application is closed, and select Start>Programs>Microsoft NetMeeting. 2. Select the Tools item from the NetMeeting window, then select the Enable Sharing item on the drop-down menu. When you close the NetMeeting window, the application sharing software will be installed. 3. Reboot the PC when prompted. Page 4 of 9
H.323 Notices Local domain name error occurs with certain machine names Error occurs when certain machine names are used. Each computer is assigned a machine name. If your machine name contains spaces, periods or other special characters, this will create an H.323 ID matching problem in Advanced Configuration on the Gatekeepers and Aliases tab. It is recommended that you avoid any special characters in your machine name. To edit the machine name, go to Settings>Control Panel> Network>Identification. VTUIF error message appears when making a H.323 call While attempting to make an H.323 call, the message VTUIF: It is illegal to call out while inside message filter appears after clicking the Dial button. Press <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del> to close AppsView, then reboot your machine. Dial button disabled in H.320 (WAN) to H.323 (LAN) calls If you use the Last Numbers Dialed button on the Hand Dialer tab to select a previously dialed H.320 to H.323 call, the Dial button will disable. Place your cursor at the end of one of the numbers listed, then type and a character and immediately delete it. On an IP Only WG500, the interface does not provide for dialing an H.323 unit through a gateway There is no mechanism in the user interface for IP Only systems to allow making a connection to an H.320 unit through a gateway. The IP only option does not support gateways with this release. Windows NT Notice Year 2000 Patch from Microsoft Microsoft has created a Y2K patch for Windows NT, which is included on the AppsView software CD in the directory d:\patches\winnty2k\y2kfixi.exe. This patch must be installed on all WG500 Windows NT systems. Double-click the.exe file to install the patch. DVD MPEG Playback Support NT 4.0 does not support software MPEG-II decode from DVD multimedia disks. However, the drive still supports the CD-ROM and DVD data. WG i Only Notice Page 5 of 9
NET3 Switch with Subaddressing When using a NET3 switch with subaddressing enabled, please be aware that voice calls do not support subaddressing and will therefore be rejected. MSN (Multi Subscriber Number) does not have this limitation. ISDN Modem Notices (128 ISDN systems) Dial-up networking lists incorrect speed When an ISDN modem connection is established, the Dial-Up Networking status window displays a connection rate of 115,200 bps. The correct display should be 56,000 or 64,000 bps. Connection fails when downloading multiple files A break in the connection occurs while attempting to download multiple files at one time. It is recommended that you download one file at a time with the ISDN modem. If a break does occur, disconnect and wait 30 seconds before re-establishing the connection, allowing the modem time to re-initialize. Other Notices SmartVideoNet Manager If you wish to install SmartVideoNet Manager it is important that you install SNMP before installing AppsView. See the WG500 Installation Guide for further instructions. Renaming WG500 During Installation It is recommended that you use the default directory path and name for your WG500 installation. If you do wish to change the name or path, do not exceed 50 characters for the complete path name. If you exceed 50 characters, AppsView will initialize, but you will not be able to place a call. LED Status Indicators on the IMUX Board (384 ISDN models) Each LED on the rear of the IMUX card (384 ISDN models) indicates the state of the ISDN protocol (Q.931) layers for its associated BRI line. The three conditions and their meanings are: OFF Layer1 is inactive BLINKING Layer 2 is initializing SOLID Layer 2 is initialized Note: There is variability in Central Office Switches and PBXs as to the exact meaning of the conditions indicated. For example, in Australia, after a time out with no call, the switch will deactivate Layer 1 and the lights will turn off. This is a normal condition. In the U.S., however, this condition would indicate a failure of some kind. Check with your local ISDN provider for details. Call log does not appear to be sorted correctly by date Dates in the call log are not sorted correctly. For example 9/2/98 will appear between 9/19/98 and 9/20/98. To make the sort appear in numerical order, you must go to the Control Panel and run the Regional Settings Page 6 of 9
applet. Set your system short date such that it always uses two digits for the month and day (i.e., mm/dd/yy or dd/mm/yy). Clear window is hidden by video The Windows 98 Close Program window, invoked by typing <Ctrl>+<Alt>+<Del>, will be hidden behind the video window if the window is centered in the middle of the PC screen. Prior to typing this key sequence, move the video window so that it is not in the middle of the screen. Unable to close Microsoft Word document after file send After a file send, Microsoft Word document cannot be closed normally after being opened from the Received Slide dialog box. After a file send, the recipient of a Microsoft Word document should not click the Open option from the Received Slide dialog box. Instead, choose the Close option, then use the PC to start Word and view/edit the document. Windows System Monitor and AppsView System Monitor conflict when opened together Problems occur when the Windows System Monitor (Programs>Accessories>System Tools) and the AppsView system monitor are opened simultaneously. Do not open both the Windows system monitor and the AppsView system monitor at the same time, as they will conflict with one another. System goes into suspend mode during a videoconference While in a videoconference, system reverts to suspend mode. VTEL highly recommends that you disable the Windows 98 Advanced Power Management settings. To modify these settings, perform the following steps: 1. Select Settings>Control Panel>Power Management. 2. Under Power Schemes, select Always On. 3. Under Settings for Always On Power Scheme, select Never for Turn off monitor and Never for Turn off hard disks. The VTEL System Monitor does not respond The VTEL System Monitor may not respond if it has been up for a long time. Use the VTEL System Monitor for short-term viewing of call statistics. Do not leave it up continuously. The data on the T.120 page of the VTEL System Monitor does not appear correct The T.120 page of the VTEL system monitor is not updated. Page 7 of 9
The data on this page is no longer updated by the system, and should be ignored. The system fails to find gatekeepers On certain networks, the auto discovery mechanism of finding gatekeepers fails to identify a gatekeeper. In the Gatekeeper tab of Advanced Configuration, select I have many gatekeepers - use this one and specify the IP address of the gatekeeper you wish to use. File transfers from the called or receiving side of the conference may be very slow The HMLP channel will fail to open on the system that answered or received the call. This will cause file transfer initiated from this endpoint to be very slow. The file will transfer completely, but will slow since the data channel is not maximized. To avoid lengthy transfers, the endpoint sending the files should always be the one that initiates the call. The system will not auto-detect the replacement of a model 5640 board If a model 5640 board is replaced with another model 5640 board, the unit will show good audio and video but will not connect with other videoconferencing units. Perform the following steps: 1. Insure that the AppsView application is closed, then select Start>Programs>Vtel>Advanced Configuration. 2. On the Network tab, select a different switch type (any switch type other thatn the one already selected), then reselect the correct switch type. This enables the Apply button. 3. Select the Apply button, then close Advanced Configuration. The next time AppsView is initialized. a window indicating that the ISDN module is being updated will be displayed. The WG500 will now connect to other units. Address book entries with long names may not be displayed properly Any entries in the Address Book with a name that is greater than the display area of the name field (approximately 17 character, if all caps) are not updated properly. After the item is defined in the address book, when the item is highlighted, the corresponding information on the right side of the window (name, number, rate) does not display correctly. To display the entry information, click on the highlighted entry several times slowly until the correct information is displayed. The remote presets display in green, though no preset has been defined The remote preset buttons are displayed in green even though they may not been set. Page 8 of 9
Ignore the color of the remote preset button. Pressing a button will move the remote camera if a preset has been previously stored. Otherwise, it will not. The Appsview application cannot be started while the ISDN modem is in use In rare instances, after upgrading a SmartStation model 128 ISDN from an older version of software to Release 6.0, the error message The Appsview application cannot be statrd with ISDN modem is in use may appear upon running Appsview for the first time. After pressing OK, another dialog box appears that says: Offending Registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Enum\Mxv4000\Port\0000\PortName contents: COM5 Delete the COM5 data in the PortName value (but leave the PortName value intact) to resolve this problem. The value COM5 must be deleted from the PortName value in the Windows Registry. If you are familiar with editing the Registry, go to the path described above and delete the COM5 value set under PortName. If you are not familiar with editing your Registry, please call our Technical Assistance Center for help. Warning: Editing the Registry improperly can result in an unusable operating system that might only be repaired by a complete reload of Windows. Please do not attempt this without the guidance of our Technical Assistance Center, unless you are familiar with Registry modification. Page 9 of 9
