4 About the Polytechnic of Namibia (PoN) The Polytechnic of Namibia (PON) is contributing to wealth creation through excellence in technology-oriented career and professional education and training, applied research and service. As an academic community, we continuously strive to produce enhanced economic utility through scholarly activities, as expressed in discovering, preserving and applying knowledge. The Institution was established in 994 through an Act of Parliament and is situated in the heart of the City of Windhoek, Namibia. On 2 December 202 Cabinet resolved that the Polytechnic should be renamed to the Namibia University of Science and Technology. The transformation has been set in motion in Parliament and final approval by the President of Namibia is expected to be a formality in 205. The PoN Academic Structure consists of 7 Schools/Faculties namely, the Schools of Computing and Informatics, Engineering, Health and Applied Sciences, Human Sciences, Management Sciences, Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences and the Harold Pupkewitz Graduate School of Business. Currently, more than 2,000 students are enrolled to study on a full-time, part-time and distance education basis. PoN qualifications are nationally and internationally recognised through a rigorous development and approval process including benchmarking and quality assurance. All students are equipped with relevant computer skills and knowledge of information systems. The campus has wireless connections in strategic places enabling students to use their own computers to access the Student Kiosk, Webmail and Internet. With almost computers available in computer labs all over the main campus and regional centres, students can use these facilities to quickly access learning resources. 14 School of Engineering Q What is the difference between Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programmes? Bachelor of Technology degrees are ideal for students who like science, A math and computers and who are analytical and want to know how things work. Teaching methods are more hands-on experimentation and demonstration during lectures. With a Bachelor of Technology degree you will be an engineering technologist capable of working in both hands-on roles and supervisory or management positions within the engineering industry. Bachelor of Engineering degrees are ideal for students with mathematical and logical strengths. Teaching methods are aimed at developing and understanding mathematical foundations related to a specific engineering discipline. After completion of the BEng degree a student must register with the Engineering Council of Namibia as a Professional Engineer and follow careers ranging from design, project management, policy development, business and financial analysis to various management positions. Introduction to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (InSTEM): InSTEM is a bridging programme that targets students who do not meet the admission requirements of programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the PoN. When successfully completing this programme, students will be eligible for admission to undergraduate programmes in STEM, depending on the specific requirements of relevant Schools General Admission Requirements: 25 points in 5 subjects including at least a D-symbol in Mathematics and Physical Science. Applicants interested in programmes offered by the Schools of Health & Applied Sciences or Natural Resources and Spatial Sciences should also score a D-symbol in Mathematics OR applicants must have passed at least four (4) N3 or N4 subjects with at least 50% and 40% respectively in Mathematics and Physics equivalent subject.
