6 Entry requirements AAA or equivalent (at least 38 points in International Baccalaureate) for all four degrees PLUS a B grade at AS level in a different subject Maths: A-Level Grade A (or HL 5 in International Baccalaureate) for BSc Accounting & Finance GCSE Grade A for other degrees English: GCSE Grade B for all four degrees Breadth of A-Level (or HL in International Baccalaureate ) subjects, including Maths or a Science subject and a Humanities or a Social Science subject

9 Personal Statements for Business and Management No single correct formula or content Looking for an individual s own approach to the subject Looking for commitment, e.g.: Work experience Wider reading Engagement with academic literature Engagement with media stories from FT, Economist, etc Career ambitions Looking for an intelligent approach, the ability to write well and argue well.

10 Personal Statements A strong personal statement demonstrating an academic interest in the course is crucial, giving examples of your past achievements or positions of responsibility. Assess your skills and abilities - what are your strengths and skills, and how would you use and build on them in following this course? If you have applied for a joint or interdisciplinary degree, have you made connections between the various areas of study?

11 Personal Statements A good check is to see whether your statement answers these questions. What really interests me about this subject Which areas of the subject grab my attention and make me want to study it in more depth? Have I shown I have read outside my exam syllabus and said what I thought about it? Have I shown how this reading relates to other aspects of the subject, and how it has helped to develop my thinking? What do I hope this course will do for me personally? What do I hope to get out of it? Have I shown I have a particular career or area of work in mind which I hope the course will help me to enter?

12 Personal Statements Let s look at an example Paragraph 1: Ever since I was young, I always seemed to want to know what I would be when the day came in which I would start working. I would sit with my parents or family members and think about an infinite number of areas in which I could work. However, it seemed that I was always inclined towards the business area. With hindsight, I have concluded that the reason for this is that throughout my whole life, I have grown up in an environment where business was everywhere. This is due to the fact that my father is a business man. With time, it has become clearer and clearer that business is the only field of work which has attracted me in a very special manner. It is because of all this that business has proven to be my vocation.

13 Personal Statements Paragraph 2 Having a family member in the business field, I am completely aware that jobs in this area involve a lot of travelling and require people who welcome change. To me, this is by no means a burden. I see myself as a committed student and worker, and I am always eager to learn new ways of working and think that I am quick in understanding.

14 Personal Statements Paragraph 3: As well as the mentioned qualities, I am always eager to undertake posts of great responsibility. Although many of my interests are academic, I am not only just interested in my studies. Since I was very young, I have found a lot of entertainment in skiing, playing tennis and rock climbing. I have, throughout the years participated in several local tournaments and competitions, some of which I have won.

15 Personal Statements Paragraph 4: In my opinion, great potential should not be wasted; it should be used, bettered. I believe that I have the potential and that I can provide a good university just as much as it can provide me with in terms of knowledge.
