11 Lesson 10 Student handout, page 1 Name Date Block LESSON 10 - Electricity and Turbine Generator Investigation Question: How will distance from the fan and fan speed affect amount of volts a wind turbine can produce? Hypothesis: If Then Because Procedure: 1. Connect two wires from wind turbine to two alligator connecting wires. 2. Connect alligator connecting wires to each end of the voltage meter. 3. Turn fan on low setting. 4. Turn knob on the voltage meter to the right to 200 V. 5. Hold propeller of wind generator up to the fan at 10 cm distance (you may need to start blades spinning). 6. **SAFETY ALERT** DO NOT GET FINGERS OR WIRES NEAR SPINNING PROPELLER! 7. Read voltage meter and record results. 8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 for 20 cm and 30 cm distance at low, medium and high fan speeds. 9. REMEMBER TO TURN OFF METER WHEN NOT USING TO CONSERVE BATTERY.

Wind flow patterns are modified by the earth's terrain, bodies of water, and vegetative cover.
