1 Presentation Overview IOSH London Metropolitan Branch Date: Tuesday 11 th March 2014 Branch Meeting and Expert Presentation Topic: Speaker: Philip Gibbs, London Fire Brigade Hospitals have the potential for high risk to life in the event of a fire. This is due the wide range of building stock containing complex equipment and processes, the vulnerability of patients and the large numbers of members of the public present. However, good management will substantially reduce the risks. The presentation outlined the regulation of fire safety in hospitals, the major fire risks and the management procedures required to reduce those risks. Two case studies were used to illustrate what happens when those risks are not adequately addressed. Presenter Philip Gibbs, is the Team Leader for the Westminster West Fire Safety Regulation Team of the London Fire Brigade (LFB). This is a team of Fire Safety Inspecting Officers who enforce fire safety regulations and give advice on fire safety for part of the Borough of Westminster. Prior to his current position Philip was a Technical Auditor responsible for auditing the performance of all Fire Safety Inspecting Officers in the LFB. Previously he was a Fire Safety Inspecting Officer in the Borough of Camden and the Borough Hospital Liaison Officer, covering several large hospitals and numerous healthcare facilities. Philip has recently completed a Master s degree in Healthcare Fire Safety Management with Loughborough University, and is a graduate member and accredited fire safety auditor with the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE). 61 forms returned out of 75 recorded attendees - 81% response rate

Speaker only pointed out issues on one or the two projected images; it would have been better to spend more time on the cases rather than law; presentation on the Marsden Hospital was far more detailed. Already knew quite a lot, but this was very good. Very interesting! Very informative; very interesting. Delightful presentation that ticked all the boxes from informative to entertaining Rare! Clearly an experienced fire safety professional but a very confusing presentation that jumped all over the place without really adding value to the audience. In my opinion a dangerous message to be putting out as the content was confused, unclear and contradictory. More detail required on practical issues. Case studies were excellent for bringing out points to bear in mind for people who already have grounding in fire. Informative yes but very basic (too simplistic for IOSH). Very informative; excellent; very engaging; very comfortable. Q&A was most informative part. Thought provoking and interesting; good comparison re old and new buildings. Really useful best practice; best presentation for some time. Presenter didn t understand call challenge policy when asked.
