1 STATUTE S1 DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION PART I GENERAL 1. The period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education is four academic years. 2. On admission to the course for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education, a candidate for the degree may, with the approval of the Academic Board, specialise in Physical Education. 3. During the period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education, a candidate for the degree must pursue such courses of study as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the School of Science. 4 Clauses 5 to 7 shall take effect from the first day of the first semester of the academic year and shall apply to candidates admitted to Year 1 of the course in and after July (1) Successful completion of the Primary specialisation course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education requires a candidate to have - (a) (b) (c) obtained a total of not less than 147 academic units in the case of candidates who offer 2 Science subjects, or not less than 141 academic units in the case of candidates who offer 1 Science subject and 1 Arts subject. Students with a specialisation in Physical Education are required to have obtained a total of not less than 138 academic units; passed in all essential modules, core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives and general electives as determined by the School of Science; fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. (2) Successful completion of the Secondary Specialisation course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education requires a candidate to have - (a) obtained a total of not less than 147 academic units in the case of candidates who offer 2 Science subjects, or not less than 141 academic units in the case of candidates who offer 1 1

2 Science subject and 1 Arts subject. Students with a specialisation in Physical Education are required to have obtained a total of not less than 147 academic units; (b) (c) passed in all essential modules, core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives and general electives as determined by the School of Science; fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. 6. No candidate shall be permitted to take more than seven years or less than three and a half years to complete the prescribed course of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education. For nongraduate candidates with professional teaching qualification admitted to the degree course, the maximum and minimum periods shall be three years and two years respectively. 7. A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education who fails to complete or for any reason does not continue with the course may, on the recommendation of the School concerned, be awarded a Diploma in Education or Diploma in Physical Education (as the case may be) by the Board of Studies of the National Institute of Education if he/she has passed all the requirements for the Diploma. 8. Clauses 9 to 11 shall apply to candidates admitted to Year 1 of the course in and after the academic year and before the academic year (1) Successful completion of the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education requires a candidate to have - (a) obtained a total of not less than 143 academic units, or 133 academic units in the case of candidates who specialise in Physical Education; (b) (c) passed in all core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives and general electives as determined by the School of Science; fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. (2) For candidates selected to read honours, successful completion of the course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Diploma in Education requires a candidate to have - (a) obtained a total of not less than 171 academic units, or 158 academic units in the case of candidates who specialise in Physical Education; 2

3 (b) (c) passed in all core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives and general electives as determined by the School of Science; fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. 10. (1) No candidate shall be permitted to take more than seven years or less than three and a half years to complete the prescribed course of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education. For candidates admitted directly to the Third Year of the course, the maximum and minimum periods shall be three years and two years respectively. (2) No candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Diploma in Education shall be permitted to take more than five years or less than four years to complete the prescribed course of study for the honours degree or to take more than four years to complete the minimum requirements for the award of the pass degree. For candidates admitted directly to the Third Year of the course, the maximum and minimum periods for the honours degree shall be three years and two years. Such candidates shall not take more than two years to complete the minimum requirements for the award of a pass degree. 11. A candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education who has passed all the core modules and fulfilled the requirements for the prescribed electives and general electives in both the first year and second year of the course of study for the degree but who fails to complete or for any reason does not continue with the course may, on the recommendation of the School concerned, be awarded a Diploma in Education or Diploma in Physical Education (as the case may be) by the Board of Studies of the National Institute of Education. 12. The Academic Board may make Regulations prescribing the form and scope of examinations and the admission of candidates thereto. For this purpose, the Academic Board may, in its discretion, seek the views of any or all the Schools in the National Institute of Education. 13. The Academic Board may, on the recommendation of the School of Science, grant such exemptions as it thinks fit from any of the requirements of this Statute. PART II HONOURS DEGREE 14. The provisions of this Part are applicable to candidates admitted to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education or Bachelor of Arts or Science with Diploma in Education specialising in Physical Education in and after Academic Year

4 15. The period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours is one academic year. 16. During the period of study for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours, a candidate must pursue such courses of study as may be prescribed by Regulations made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the School of Science or School of Physical Education. 17. A person who has fulfilled all requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education or Bachelor of Arts or Science with Diploma in Education specialising in Physical Education, on the recommendation of the School of Science or School of Physical Education, after taking into account the views of the Head of Division concerned, may be admitted by the Academic Board as a candidate for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours in one of the following fields of study: Chemistry Life Science Physical Education Physics 18. Successful completion of the course requires a candidate to have - (a) obtained a total of not less than 28 academic units or 25 academic units in the case of candidates who specialise in Physical Education; (b) passed in all core modules and fulfilled the requirements for prescribed electives as determined by the School of Science; (c) fulfilled such other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board. 19. The degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours is awarded in the following classes: First Class Honours; Second Class Honours (Upper Division); Second Class Honours (Lower Division); Third Class Honours. The Board of Examiners for the Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science with Honours will determine the class to which a successful candidate will be assigned. 20. Each of the modules in the examination for the degree of Bachelor of 4

5 Science with Honours may be taken once only. REGULATIONS MADE UNDER STATUTE S1 PART I COURSE OF STUDY FOR CANDIDATES ADMITTED TO YEAR 1 OF THE COURSE IN AND AFTER ACADEMIC YEAR (1) The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education comprises modules in the following seven groups: Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 Group 6 Group 7 - Academic Subjects - Education Studies - Curriculum Studies - Curriculum Content (for Primary Specialisation course) - School-based teacher training (the Practicum) - Essential Modules - General Electives (2) With the approval of the Dean of the School of Science, a student may offer modules from those in his preceding or subsequent year of study. (3) Each module will be assigned a certain number of academic units as may be determined by the relevant Schools of the National Institute of Education. (4) The distribution of modules for each semester will be determined by the relevant Schools of the National Institute of Education. 2. Each candidate for the degree shall offer core modules and prescribed electives in two academic subjects from Group 1 as well as core modules and prescribed electives in Groups 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. In addition, a) each candidate in the Primary Specialisation course shall offer at least 6 academic units of general electives that can be chosen from any of the modules offered by the School or by any other School with the approval of the Dean; b) each candidate in the Secondary Specialisation course shall offer the number of academic units according to their course of study as shown below: 2 Science subjects - 6 academic units 1 Science subject and 1 Arts subject - 12 academic units Physical Education - 3 academic units 3. (1) For candidates not specialising in Physical Education, the subjects 5

6 offered under each of the Groups are: (a) (i) Group 1 Biology Chemistry Physics English Language (ii) Subject to the approval of the Dean of the School of Science, a candidate may offer a combination of academic subjects as follows: and any Arts academic subject Physics and Music Biology and Geography The School of Science, with the approval of the Academic Board, may add to the list of academic subjects or to the combination of academic subjects from time to time. (b) Group 2 comprises modules in - Education Studies (c) Group 3 comprises modules in the following - Primary Specialisation course Teaching of English Language Teaching of Science or one option from any of the following: Teaching of Art Teaching of Chinese Teaching of Music Teaching of Social Studies subject to the approval of the Dean of the School of Science. Secondary Specialisation course Two curriculum studies (secondary) subjects from the following, corresponding to their two academic subjects offered: Teaching of Biology Teaching of Chemistry Teaching of Physics (d) Group 4 which is for Primary Specialisation course only, comprises curriculum content modules in - 6

7 English Language Candidates are required to take a third curriculum content module which corresponds to their choice of a third curriculum studies subject. (e) (f) Group 5 comprises modules in the Practicum. Group 6 comprises essential modules in the following: Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills Environmental Studies and Global Issues Critical Reading & Writing The Teacher and Society Science and Civilisation (g) Group 7 comprises general elective modules in Arts, Science, Education and Physical Education. 4. (1) For candidates specialising in Physical Education, the subjects offered under each of the Groups in the course are - (a) Group 1 Physical Education Biology Chemistry Physics (b) Group 2 comprises modules in - Education Studies (c) Group 3 comprises modules in the following - Primary Specialisation Course Teaching of Physical Education Secondary Specialisation Course Teaching of Physical Education One option from the following, corresponding to the other academic subject offered: Teaching of Biology Teaching of Chemistry Teaching of Physics 7

8 (d) Group 4 which is for the Primary Specialisation course only, comprises a curriculum content module in - (e) (f) Group 5 comprises modules in the Practicum Group 6 comprises essential modules in the following: Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills Environmental Studies and Global Issues Critical Reading & Writing The Teacher and Society Health and Wellness (g) Group 7 comprises general elective modules in Arts, Science, Education and Physical Education. 5. Every candidate who has not passed the written component of the English Qualifying Test at the time of his admission to the School of Science must offer and pass the subject Language Communication Skills before proceeding with the subject Critical Reading & Writing. In addition, a candidate who fails the oral component of the English Qualifying Test is required to offer and pass the subject Oral Communication Skills. 6. The Academic Board on the advice of the School of Science shall have discretion to determine the syllabuses of subjects and the conditions under which a candidate may offer subjects. Examinations 7. (1) There shall be an examination towards the end of each semester in such subjects as may have been offered under Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 in the course of study as prescribed in regulation 3 or regulation 4 of these Regulations (as the case may be). (2) Unless otherwise determined by the School of Science, there shall be at least one paper for each of the subjects offered by the candidate. (3) The School of Science shall have discretion to determine such forms of assessment of a candidate s work in the course of study as it thinks appropriate and the results of such assessment shall form part of the results of the examination. 8. The examination for the Practicum under Group 5 of the course of study shall be held at such times as may be determined by the examiners. 9. A candidate may proceed with the next stage of the course of study if he satisfies the requirements prescribed by the Academic Board. 8

9 10. Each of the honours subject modules in the examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Diploma in Education may be taken once only. 11. The degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) is awarded in the following classes: First Class Honours; Second Class Honours (Upper Division); Second Class Honours (Lower Division); Third Class Honours. The Board of Examiners for the Examination for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Diploma in Education will determine the class to which a successful candidate will be assigned. PART II COURSE OF STUDY FOR CANDIDATES ADMITTED TO YEAR 1 OF THE COURSE IN AND AFTER ACADEMIC YEAR AND BEFORE ACADEMIC YEAR (1) (a) The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science with Diploma in Education comprises core modules and prescribed electives in the following five groups in each of the four years of study: Group 1 Group 2 Group 3 Group 4 Group 5 - Academic Subjects - Education Studies - Curriculum Studies - School-based teacher training (the Practicum) - Language Enrichment and Academic Discourse Skills (LEADS) (b) The course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) with Diploma in Education comprises modules as prescribed in regulation 12(1)(a) and additional core modules and prescribed electives in one of the following: Chemistry Life Science Physical Education Physics (2) With the approval of the Dean of the School of Science, a student may offer modules from those in his preceding or subsequent year of study. (3) Each module will be assigned a certain number of academic units as may be determined by the relevant Schools of the National Institute of Education. 9

10 (4) The distribution of modules for each semester will be determined by the relevant Schools of the National Institute of Education. 13. Each candidate for the degree shall offer core modules and prescribed electives in two academic subjects from Group 1 as well as core modules and prescribed electives in Group 2, 3, 4 and 5. In addition, each candidate shall offer at least 8 academic units (4 academic units in the case of a candidate admitted direct to Year 3 of the course) of general electives that can be chosen from any of the modules offered by the School or by any other School with the approval of the Dean. 14. Group 5 comprises modules in the following: Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills (2) Candidates will follow the structure of the course in accordance with the provisions of regulation 17(1) of these Regulations. 15. (1) For candidates specialising in Physical Education, the subjects offered under each of the Groups in the course are - (a) Group 1 Physical Education Biology Chemistry Physics (b) Group 2 comprises modules in - Education Studies (c) Group 3 comprises modules in the following - Years 1 & 2 Teaching of Physical Education Teaching of English Language Years 3 & 4 Teaching of Physical Education One option from the following, corresponding to the other academic subject offered: Teaching of Biology Teaching of Chemistry 11

12 Teaching of Physics (d) (e) Group 4 comprises modules in the Practicum. Group 5 comprises modules in the following; Language Communication Skills Oral Communication Skills (2) Candidates will follow the structure of the course in accordance with the provisions of regulation 17(2) of these Regulations. 16. Every candidate who has not passed the written component of the English Qualifying Test at the time of his admission to the School of Science must offer and pass the subject Language Communication Skills. In addition, a candidate who fails the oral component of the English Qualifying Test is required to offer and pass the subject Oral Communication Skills. 17.
