1 A Guide to Behavioral Health Resources for Children and Youth» 2012 Report subtitle Prepared by the City of New Orleans Fall 2012
2 Table of Contents Introduction... 1 Purpose... 1 Contents... 1 Crisis... 2 School-Based... 4 Direct Treatment Providers Supportive Organizations Introduction Purpose Mental health and substance abuse issues continue to pose significant challenges to the citizens of New Orleans. A particularly affected and vulnerable population is young people in our community. Youth carry a heavy burden of behavioral health issues and experience the gaps in the behavioral health care system. In an important first step to close these gaps and reduce the challenges young people face, the City of New Orleans has created a behavioral health resource guide specific to agencies who serve children and youth. The resources listed in this guide are intended to be used by teachers, faculty, parents, residents, or young people themselves to help children and youth access needed services. In addition, the guide highlights agencies who offer school-based behavioral health training and services that can help community members who serve youth. The guide presents an inventory of services that can help a young person before, during, or after he or she has a negative behavioral health experience. Contents This guide is separated into four sections: Crisis, School-Based, Direct Treatment Providers, Supportive Organizations. The Crisis section highlights immediate crisis response services available in the area. The School-Based include those that offer educational trainings, crisis intervention, and/or community building services for both children and school personnel. Direct Treatment Providers are those which offer direct mental health and substance abuse treatment. Supportive Agencies include referral services and after school resources for children and youth. The symbol denotes agencies that provide crisis intervention services. 1
