1 University of Florida College of Health and Human Performance Department of Applied Physiology & Kinesiology Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program Course Syllabus **All information contained in this syllabus is subject to change at the discretion of the Professor** Course Information: Clinical Experience in Athletic Training IV ATR 4842 Meeting times: Days/Time: lecture W block 4 Lecture or laboratory Meeting Location: FLG 275 Instructor: Keith Naugle PhD ATC NSCA CPT Office: Yon Hall 9 Phone: knaugle@hhp.ufl.edu Office Hours: M blocks 4 and 6 Friday block 5 Required Text: Prentice Principles of Athletic Training 14 th edition Prentice McGraw Hill Athletic Training Exam Review, A study guide to success 4 th edition 2009 Van Ost Slack Inc Recommended Text Any other BOC prep book or study guide Course Description and Learning Objectives: This course is intended to provide the student with the opportunity necessary to grow both clinically and professionally within the field of athletic training. Clinical and professional growth will be achieved through attendance of class, and the integration and synthesis of cognitive and psychomotor skills learned in the ATR courses of 4213c, 4314c, 4512, 4822, 4212c, 4302c, 4315, 4812, 4832,. In addition, this course is designed to prepare the Athletic Training student for the BOC. Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Notification and documentation for excused absences is required!! Students with excused absences must turn in all required assignments prior to their leaving town. If you have an extended absence you must have it on file in the office of the Vice President of Student Development. Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when requesting accommodation. Because attendance can affect your grade, all students are expected to attend lecture sessions. Attendance means being properly prepared, in proper attire and arriving on time. Absences will result in the loss of 5 from your final point total.

2 Attendance at the clinical site is also required; failure to complete the minimum 10 hours per week will result in a discipline form reported to the ATEP steering committee for appeal. Clinical experience Proficiencies must be turned into me by the last day of class to receive full credit. A midterm check will appear at midpoint. Points will be deducted for late proficiencies. Proficiencies are worth 15 points, Complete a minimum of 10 hours per week at the clinical site Volunteer services: To enhance the valuable clinical opportunities available to athletic training students at the University of Florida, each student is asked to complete at least 3 volunteer experiences (outside of their assigned clinical experience) per semester. Volunteer experiences may include (but are not limited to) 1) tournaments or multi-team events hosted by the University Athletic Association, Inc, Santa Fe College or Alachua County Public or Private High Schools (i.e., cross-country meet, indoor or outdoor track & field events, high school wrestling tournaments, Florida Relays, NCAA regional or national events, District or Regional high school events), 2) Professional Development Experiences (i.e., attending or presenting at SEATA Student Workshop, ATAF, NATA, High School Workshops), 3) Research Study Participation (note: should have a multi-day commitment or a minimum of 4 hours) and 4) Local Area Community Relations Events or Other Faculty Approved Events. All volunteer experiences must be approved by the academic faculty member prior to completion and documented on the Volunteer Experience Form. Documentation of a complete Primary care rotation in either Fall or Spring semester Preceptor evaluations will also count for 40 points of your grade. 15 for midterm, 25 for final Assignments Chapter outlines for every chapter listed on the syllabus is required to be turned in on that day of class that the topic is presented by the students. (Basically you will be outlining ~2 chapters per week) You will have problem based learning assignments each one will be worth points towards your final grade. Presentation of your chapter topics will be graded based on succinctness and presentation quality. Administration All site paperwork must be complete prior to the final exam in order to be awarded full credit towards the grade. (site eval, ACI eval, Primary care eval, etc.) As part of your administration grade you will need to show documentation of meeting with an academic advisor some point in the semester or past semester. Computer test A midterm will be taken on the computer.

3 Final practical A final practical will take place during the last week of school to correspond with your completion of the class. Format will be discussed during the semester. LATE projects or assignments (including your end of year paper work will result in point deductions per day). Grading: Clinical Experience: o Proficiencies: 15 points 7.5 percent o ACI evaluations: 40 points 20 percent o Volunteer services 15 points 7.5 percent o Clinical Hours 15 points 7.5 percent Assignments: o 30 points 15 percent o Single Presentation 15 points 7.5 percent o Team presentation 20 points 10 percent o PBLs 10 points 7.5 percent Administration 10 points 5 percent Midterm 20 points 10 percent Practical final 10 points 5 percent Total: 200 points Any work turned in late will be docked 3 points per day!!! 4 D E 0.00 Below 60 As part of the CAATE requirements for completion of Educational Competencies and Proficiencies, all students must pass (i.e., earn a C = 72% or higher) assessments of this material or complete remediation before moving on to the next course in the ATEP. Students will be provided up to two additional remediation opportunities, beyond the original assessment, to successfully pass a skill (practical exam) or content area (written/e-learning exam) within this course. Any student who cannot successfully complete the required CAATE competency and/or proficiency examinations after two remediation sessions will have their case reviewed by the AT Steering Committee. Students who require remediation two or more times throughout the semester on written and/or practical exams may also have their case reviewed by the AT Steering Committee. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND POLICIES: There will be NO make-up examinations unless exceptional conditions occur as defined in the University of Florida Undergraduate Catalog. Please see this link for more information. Prior permission from the professor is required. There will be a time limit for each examination. Examinations will evaluate the understanding of material from lecture, text, and other supplemental material provided. If you will be traveling for a University sanctioned event and will miss an assignment due date, your assignment is due before you leave. You must notify the professor with an explanation for missing class, in writing ( or letter), to receive an excused absence for class. Students are responsible for all materials missed as a result of an absence. Please review the academic absence policy in the ATEP Student Handbook! Half of your proficiencies are due at the midterm and they are to be fully completed by the last day of class. COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY-WIDE POLICIES: Academic Honesty: Academic misconduct appears in a variety of forms (including plagiarism). It is a violation of the University of Florida Honor Code (On all work submitted for credit by students at the university, the following pledge is either required or implied: "On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid in doing this assignment.") and may be punished in a variety of ways, from failing the

5 assignment and/or the entire course to academic probation, suspension or expulsion. If you have questions about what constitutes academic misconduct before handing in an assignment, see your instructor. ADA Policy: The University of Florida provides accommodations for students with documented disabilities. For more information regarding services and procedures for requesting accommodations visit Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when requesting accommodation. At the beginning of each semester, any student with a disability should inform the course instructor if instructional accommodations or academic adjustments are needed. Attendance and punctuality is expected and highly recommended. No makeup examinations will be given without a serious and/or compelling reason. Quizzes are given at the beginning of class (first 15 minutes) with no exceptions. If you miss a quiz due to lateness or absenteeism, you will not be allowed to make-up the quiz. If you are to miss a class for whatever reason you MUST contact the instructor prior to class in order to be eligible to make-up the quiz. Confidentiality: The University ensures the confidentiality of student educational records in accordance with State University System rules, state statutes and FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, also known as the Buckley Amendment. Course Grading Policy: Students will earn their course grade based on completion of coursework as outlined in the Grading Criteria listed above. Percentage calculations are rounded up at.6 or above and rounded down at.5 or below. 6 Policy: Students are required to check their University of Florida account daily. Reminders and course material may be disseminated via and it is the student s responsibility to read and respond (if appropriate). Appeals on quizzes & examination grades can only be made by appointment with instructor and will be considered only with a written request describing justification and/or scoring error. Last Day to Withdraw: In order to withdraw from a course it is not sufficient simply to stop attending class or to inform the instructor of your intention to withdraw. In accordance with college policy, contact your adviser to begin the withdrawal process. The last day for withdrawal from this course can be found at Student Responsibility for Course Prerequisites: Students are responsible to have satisfied all published prerequisites for this class. Please review the prerequisites and discuss any questions with your instructor and/or your academic adviser. Any student found guilty of academic dishonesty will receive an "E" grade for this course. Academic dishonesty includes cheating on exams, using notes, copying another's work, etc. There will be no deviation from this policy. and E-Learning Policy: Students are required to check their University of Florida and E-Learning Course account daily. Cell Phone/Text Messaging Policy: Students will not engage in text messaging or access their cellular telephones during class time. Special considerations will be awarded at the discretion of the faculty. Cell phones MUST be turned off during class time. Each time a student s cell phone rings during class will result in a 5-point deduction from the next scheduled examination for that student. LABORATORY DRESS: This class requires direct visualization and palpation or examination of the human body; students are required to dress in a manner that will facilitate this process. Typically, athletic shorts should be worn for all labs concerning the lower extremity, and appropriate attire should be worn for labs involving upper extremity observation and evaluation. IF appropriate dress is not followed points will be deducted off your grade. Any day marked as a lab day or the final lab practical, you better be dressed in lab clothes
