5 The Governor s Art Award The annual Governor s Art Award recognizes a Colorado town or city for their collective efforts to enhance their community and their economy through strategic use of the arts. Carbondale Mayor Stacey Patch Bernot and Lafayette Mayor Carolyn Cutler will be presented with the awards, which are original oil paintings by artist John Lintott of Fruita. The art selection panel chose Lintott for his vivid landscapes and use of light, saying one feels they can step into his paintings. The artworks will hang in public locations in the respective cities, and a third painting by Lintott will hang in the lobby of the Governor s Office. Colorado Creative Industries, a division of the Office of Economic Development and International Trade, annually convenes a panel to review nominations. In selecting Carbondale and Lafayette as the recipients, the review panel cited each city s detailed plans for making the arts central to economic and community development. They were impressed with both towns commitment to public art and their efforts to support and promote their artists and creative entrepreneurs. The other nominated cities were Aspen, Durango, Greeley, Lone Tree, Louisville, Mancos, Parker and Westminster. 8 Presenters Matt Morris- Keynote Speaker Denver native, songwriter and recording artist, Matt Morris music is filled with diverse moods, styles and topics that reflect Matt s devotion to living and writing about a meaningful life. Morris award-winning musical career has been shaped by several unique collaborations, from singing nationally and internationally with his father, Gary Morris, to performing Hallelujah with pop sensation Justin Timberlake on the Hope For Haiti Now Telethon in His songs have been recorded by Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Reba McIntyre and Mary J Blige. They have been responsible for music/art program development for organizations like the Denver Theatre District, Downtown Denver Partnership, and Southwest Airlines. Previously he was the cello professor at the University of Northern Colorado. Bailey performs in both the classical and jazz world, either as a soloist or as a member of his band, Zuri. 10 Presenters Birgitta De Pree, Actor and Theater Educator Birgitta De Pree is a professional actor and theatre educator whose work includes performing, writing, directing and teaching. She received her M.F.A. from the National Theatre Conservatory and is a founding director/producer of the Manitou Art Theater. De Pree works extensively as an artist-in-residence throughout Colorado. themat.org Mitch Dickman, Producer/Director, Listen Productions Mitch Dickman formed Listen Productions out of a deep passion and dedication to create art that promotes communication and makes a positive impact on society. Mitch is currently finishing up the feature documentary Hanna Ranch. Other feature films include DNC Mediamockracy, a hybrid play/documentary that received The Westword Award for Best Example of Theatrical Relevancy, and the narrative feature film A Test of Wills. Flowers left as Project Director for Downtown Development at the St. Louis Development Corporation in 2002 and moved to Fort Collins to write a novel. She was lured back to non-profit management and hired as the Station Manager for KRFC in Flowers was subsequently hired by Beet Street as a consultant in 2009 and then permanently in February 2010 as Project and Development Director and now leads the organization as Executive Director. Beetstreet.org Susan Fries, Creative Community Builder & Collaboration Coordinator, Executive Director of Pueblo Performing Arts Guild (PPAG) Susan Fries has worked tirelessly to promote and develop the arts in Pueblo. As the Executive Director Fries has guided, informed and worked intimately with a variety of local creative industry non-profits, business, and co-ops in various stages of development. She has been on the forefront of connecting the dots between local arts programs and positive economic impact. Fries, in addition to her professional work, is an active volunteer in her community, including: Destination Pueblo, All Pueblo Reads, Colorado Humanities, Song of Pueblo: an Oratorio, and more. PuebloPAG.org Leanne Goebel, Art Writer, Critic, Journalist and Cool Hunter-in-Chief Leanne Goebel is the editor and curator of ColoradoCreates.com. She is a 2009 NEA International Arts Journalism Fellow in the Visual Arts and a 2007 Creative Capital Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Recipient. Raised in Morrison, Goebel s first career was in marketing and public relations with a small religious publishing company based in Denver. Her second career, following a car accident 8

11 and mild brain injury involves the two things she loves most writing and the arts. Goebel is a member of the International Association of Art Critics, the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Arts Journalism Program and serves on the board of Arts for Colorado. coloradocreates.com David Griggs, Public Artist David Griggs is a Denver-based artist with over 45 commissioned works of art throughout the United States. Primarily a designer of architecturally integrated, site-responsive public art, his work is installation-based, engaging the audience with visual intimacy and physical interactivity. For the last 20 years he has been selfemployed as a public artist, for percent-for-art, public art, and private commissions. Recent commissions include projects for Anchorage, Las Vegas, Madison and Santa Fe. Her 2012 documentary, U.S. Health Care: The Good News, premiered February 16th on PBS member stations nationwide. Hartman was a producer for The Art of Teaching the Arts for Annenberg Media, produced and directed multiple educational programs for K 12 teachers, and created, produced and directed News for Kids for KCNC and NBC. Hartman lives in Denver, Colorado, with her husband the cartoonist Ed Stein. Jolt of The Guerilla Garden Art Studios, Public Artist, muralist, gallery owner, fine art painter Jeremy Silas Ulibarri [a.k.a. Jolt] founded the Guerilla Garden in 2010 to build a creative space where local artists could collaborate with other local artists. Jolt accomplished this exceedingly well, making the Guerilla Garden one of Denver s premier creative venues. The Studio works on the understanding that collaboration leads to innovation, which is why their artists work with design professionals. These diverse talents give the Guerilla Garden the advantage by housing both the artists and the engineering professionals, allowing the vision to be translated into architectural materials. As a perfect metaphor Jolt sees himself as a gardener, adding color to urban landscapes. His first feature-length film, Chiefs, won the Grand Jury Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival and Iron Ladies of Liberia was aired with over 50 broadcasters worldwide including PBS and the BBC. They Killed Sister Dorothy won the Audience and Grand Jury Prizes at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was broadcast on HBO and received a 2010 Emmy nomination. He worked on high profile events during the 2008 Democratic Convention including the after party for Presidnet Barack Obama at Mile High Stadium. Kelly has a talent for publication design and collaborating with fellow writers and designers on multiple magazine projects in her free time. He attended four years of art school and moved on to freelance, including teaching an Illustration class to students in the state prison. Killorn has always worked as an artist in many fields but mostly in publishing. Curtis says, This last year has been the most challenging of my life so far. It has also brought the most creative connection and implementation ever. salidasteamplant.com Natalie La Scala, Digital Media Artist and Educator Natalie La Scala is a Denver based artist and educator focused on Digital Media and Film Production. Currently a faculty member at the Art Institute of Colorado, La Scala teaches in the Digital Filmmaking and Video Production Department in all aspects of Media Production. During her undergraduate and graduate studies her interests were rooted in cinematography and content creation. Upon relocating to Colorado in 2004, La Scala has focused her work on Digital Asset Management and content delivery over multiple platforms. She strives to create content people can use while sharing the experience. natalie@studiolascala.com Heather Leavitt Martinez, Visual Recording Artist Drawing on walls whenever possible, Leavitt Martinez is the retired co-founder of Arts Perspective magazine and continues to support artists and the arts communities of Southwestern Colorado. In addition to being a fine art photographer represented by Open Shutter Gallery, she has had the opportunity to work with artists in all phases of their career by writing and publishing their work, holding exhibition and programming positions at non-profit arts centers, and has recently expanded her passion by offering the Art Career Theorem, a visual facilitation tool created to help artists navigate their creative path. When she s not fueling the flame of artistic passion, she has a full-time career as a graphics specialist at Korn/Ferry International, a talent and leadership consulting agency. Lucy Lynn, Yarn bomber, Ladies Fancywork Society Lucy Lynn is a member of the Ladies Fancywork Society who has been bringing a feminine touch to the tough world of street art since 2007 by hooking up Denver s street signs, seedy corners, and sunny benches with a little bit of ladylike crochet. The Ladies work has received awards at the American Arts Conference, been commissioned by the Denver Office of Cultural Affairs and been featured in The Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and galleries and periodicals across the globe. 13 Kimberly MacArthur Graham, Marketer, Publicist, Artist, Layer Cake Creative Founder and principal of Layer Cake Creative, a marketing and PR firm, Kimberly MacArthur Graham has over twenty years of experience in public relations and communications focused on the design industry and arts nonprofits. CCI promotes supports and expands Colorado s creative sector to drive economic growth, increase jobs, and enhance our quality of life. They also provide financial and professional assistance to creative entrepreneurs, arts organizations, schools and municipal agencies. Mariner is a frequent presenter on the role of artists and creative entrepreneurs in economic development and downtown revitalization. 20 Breckenridge Breckenridge Arts District The Breckenridge Arts District began in 2001 when the Town of Breckenridge partnered with Backstage Theatre Company to renovate the recently acquired Shamus O Toole s Saloon into a small theatre. Currently the district is home to five structures that each share a unique piece of Breckenridge culture. The Arts District of Breckenridge Master Plan was adopted in 2004 as a correlative document to the Town s Master Plan and Development Code. The accelerated build-out of the Arts District Master Plan was recently put on the Town Council s Top Ten Priority List. Riverwalk Center The newly remodeled Riverwalk Performing Arts Center is an integral part of the growing Arts District located across Main Street and the Blue River. A visual connection is proposed from the Riverwalk Center to the arts campus through the use of decorative pavers, street furniture, sculpture and signage that will help to solidify a perpendicular spine from Main Street to Ridge Street. Quandary Antiques Cabin Donated by Jim and Maureen Nicholl s, the Quandary Antiques Cabin was relocated from its original location two blocks down Ridge Street, to the Arts District in The cabin now functions as a small ceramic studio with open studio hours and workshops taught by experienced ceramic artists. Fuqua Livery Stable The rehabilitated historic Fuqua Livery Stable opened in August of The project received $129,000 from the Colorado State Historical Fund for restoration. The Fuqua Livery Stable was presented the prestigious Steven H. Hart Award for outstanding efforts in historic preservation in February The stable is used for ongoing arts workshops and Studio 3, within Fuqua, is leased to local artists on an annual basis. Photographer Carl Scofield is currently the resident artist at Fuqua. Tin Shop In August 2006, the historic Tin Shop became the district s first visiting artist facility. Artists are invited to stay in the fully furnished studio apartment in the upstairs of the Tin Shop and work on their medium of choice for one week to one month in the main floor studio space. Artists are selected based on the quality of their artwork and proposed public participation program. Robert Whyte House The Town was recently awarded a Historic Structure Assessment Grant (HSA) from History Colorado to be completed in The future rehabilitation will convert the Robert Whyte House into a second visiting artist studio.
