1 harlem business alliance ANNUAL REPORT 2013
2 [ WELCOME ] Dear Friends, I am excited to share with you another year of accomplishments, innovation and evolution. In 2013, we offered 41 workshops to over 930 participants and provided 1961 hours of one-on-one technical assistance. Those numbers are just snapshot of our milestones. The endeavors of our superstar clients are truly impressive. This year we saw exceptional growth of many clients businesses. Our 2013 Business Plan Competition winner was Limation, a delicious lime based soft drink. Charmaine DaCosta, the owner, began Limation in a quest to recreate the limeade she drank as a child in Jamaica. Since winning, Ms. Dacosta has received marketing assistance from HBA and is currently selling her product in stores throughout NYC. Another superstar client, Brenda and Aaron Beener, owners of Seasoned Vegan continued on their quest to open a vegan soul food restaurant in Harlem. With HBA s counseling, Seasoned Vegan opened its doors in March In 2012, HBA was awarded a $728,750 Community Economic Development (CED) grant for a new HBA program, the Back Office Support Initiative. With this grant we were able to build our new co-working space, Creative Creative houses our Business Support Center where we provide pro-bono back office services for up to a year to eligible local entrepreneurs. In exchange for this assistance these entrepreneurs agree to hire low-income residents. As of now, our CED entrepreneurs have hired over 60 employees! Creative doubles as a co-working space, where business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs rent office space at affordable rates. The collaborative environment, state-of the art technology, and transformational events have led many to become members. We have grown to over 50 members and are excited to see the next wave of talented creatives to join. As a mission driven organization, HBA is fully committed to the education and growth of Harlem s business community. With your support, we are fueling transformative change in the lives of business owners. We invite you to take a look to see how we tackled that mission in Sincerely, Regina L. Smith
3 HBA is... HBA provides... A 33 year old 501(c)(3) non-profit that understands the power of the collective voice. An advocate for the creation, preservation and retention of businesses in Harlem.
