Understanding the costs of renting: Note: The total costs that you are responsible for as a renter may be included in the rent, or there may be extra costs, like heat and hot water. This is important to understand as a renter in order to manage your money. For example many apartments include heat and hot water, but you are still responsible for paying your hydro bill in addition to your monthly rent. As a guideline hydro for a one bedroom or bachelor apartment is about $30 per month, and it is billed every two months. It is often helpful to ask the landlord what utilities are included when you inquire about a listing. For instance, you should ask about (a) heat/hot water, (b) cable/internet, and (c) electricity.
