1 Inside this issue: Message from our President 2 Can you all believe it is another year! Last year went by so fast but it was a great year for the Alabama-West Florida UMW conference. If you were able to get to any of the events last year, you could see that a lot of effort went into planning them to ensure they were spiritual, educational, fun and meaningful. This year we also want to make each and every event better. We start in February with Tapestry. This year the Mobile District will be hosting this event on the 24th and 25th. They are having some great focus groups and the speaker will be special. There is more information on page 5 and 6. Spiritual Enrichment Retreat is coming to Blue Lake on March 23rd-25th. Registration forms for this will be included in the mail edition, on line and sent with my . The Cooperative School of Christian Missions will be moving to the Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. There will be much more information about this in the next edition of the Alert. Finally, we end the year on October 19 with the Leadership Training event for all district officers followed on Saturday Oct. 22nd with our Annual Meeting. UMW members come and bring a friend to some of these events. You will not be disappointed. 2 From the Desk of the President & Vice President FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT: What a GREAT Annual Meeting! Did you feel the excitement? Did you feel the presence of God? Did you hear the laughter? Did see the smiles and respond to the hugs? I did! I laughed, I smiled and I hugged so many wonderful people. All part of who we are - the Faith, the Hope and the Love in Action as United Methodist Women. It was a great day as we made new friends, rejoiced in seeing familiar faces and celebrated the ministry of United Methodist Women and saw the awesome number of school kits you brought. WHAT A RESPONSE FROM YOU ALL! Sheila Hare, Conference Secretary, rented a U-Haul and hand delivered to U.M.C.O.R in Baldwin, LA three hundred completed kits and supplies for about two hundred more I am so looking forward to our 2012 annual meeting with excitement. I can hardly wait to see what great things we will do in this brand new year! Make plans now to come to Blue Lake on October 19 th & 20 th for our 40 th Annual Meeting. WOW! 2012 A new year and a new page in the history of United Methodist Women. As we begin moving forward there is work to be done as United Methodist Women. Some of the areas of need are education, domestic violence, unemployment, homelessness, poverty, health, immigration and all the isims that pollute our society. As long as there are issues plaguing our world there will be work for United Methodist Women. The first phrase of one section of our Purpose states: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God it is no accident that to know God is the first part of our Purpose. If we know God then all of our other ministries follow. We must take time in our busy lives to spend time with God praying (which includes listening) and reading scripture. The Tapestry Retreat (Feb at Christ Church in Mobile) and the Spiritual Enrichment Retreat (Mar at Blue Lake) are wonderful opportunities for you to get away, enjoy the beauty of God s creation, and spend quality time in developing a relationship with God. Blessings are always received from attending these retreats. Last year I asked us to be S.A.V.V.Y. United Methodist Women. This year I would like for us to think about the following as we begin our mission work. Plug into the P.O.W.E.R. (Prayer, Others, Word of God, Equipped, Respond) Remember to be in prayer for our work, always put others first, listen to the word of God, become better equipped to do our work and to always respond with a willing heart and joyful spirit. There is much to do as we assure God s call to be in mission and ministry throughout the world as United Methodist Women. I thank God for all of you and the way you answer God s call. Betty [email protected] FROM THE DESK OF THE VICE PRESIDENT The Year 2011 in Review The Alabama/West Florida Conference of United Methodist Women enjoyed an amazing year, full of opportunities for spiritual growth and fellowship. In January there was the COSROW Retreat at Blue Lake. February took us to Port St. Joe, Florida for a fun filled Tapestry. Our hostesses from the Marianna/Panama City District rolled out the RED carpet for us and showed us what planning and teamwork can accomplish. We greeted Spring at Blue Lake with our Spiritual Enrichment Retreat, where we were introduced to our year long theme All Things Made New. The highlight of the weekend was the releasing of the butterflies on Sunday morning. Summer arrived as usual and your Mission Team headed to South Atlantic Regional School at Ferrum College in Virginia to attend training for the mission studies that were to be presented at Cooperative School of Christian Mission in July at Blue Lake Joy to the World, Haiti and The Journey. October brought us to the last of our conference activities for the year District Officer Training and Conference Annual Day. Your executive team spent many hours of preparation and praying to make these programs more meaningful and fun. If you were there, I know you will agree that the skits were upbeat and informative. The cheers given by each district cheer leaders were unique and gave the program a festive and spirited tone. Mothers and daughters from several districts attended again this year and a special program was planned for them. The girls prepared School Kits from the supplies donated by all the UMW members. The response for this project was so great that a truck had to be rented to deliver the kits to Sager Brown in Louisiana. We thank Sheila Hare and her husband for making this important delivery. If you missed any of these 2011 events, please mark your calendars for the 2012 events and join us for food, fun, spiritual growth and fellowship. Remember the work of United Methodist Women needs your participation to make our purpose come alive by expanding concepts of mission as we reach out to women, children and youth around the world. Continue to pray, read, learn, attend and give as we participate in the wonderful missional work of United Methodist Women. In HIS Service, Pat Dodge Conference Vice President

This award is given to the district that has the best attendance to their district events. To top it off they collected the most ribbons money for mission again this year.

8 Membership Nurture and Outreach Membership in United Methodist Women is so exciting. It is the heartbeat of the organization and you are all very important members. Your role is critical to the work and success of the organization. Each District Coordinator for Membership Nurture and Outreach has the responsibility of collecting the membership numbers for their District. But the Local Unit is responsible for the accuracy of their numbers and getting them to the District on time. It does take time, but it is a most valuable report for the District, the Conference and for Women's Division. I know that many people are involved in making the membership reports and you all will do a most wonderful job. Let us all try to do our reports as early as possible and send to your District MNO or District President. If you have any changes at the end of the year you can just or call your District Officer and she can add it to your form. If this is done early. Although keeping a record of our membership is so important and a vital part of our job, we also need to stay informed about the needs and concerns of membership as well as organizing new units. Through your participation you will fulfill our purpose in mission. All of us are called to be good leaders and good members within United Methodist Women. I have enjoyed serving as your Conference MNO Coordinator and if I can help you in any way please call on me. Georgette Griffith [email protected] Happy New Year to all my UMW Sisters It is so hard to believe that I'm sitting here at the end of the year, preparing to enter into 2012! Where did the year go? I hope each of you had a Wonderful and Joyous Christmas season. I want to encourage all of you to participate in as many of the coming year's United Methodist Women's events. There is so much going on and it begins in February with Tapestry in Mobile. I hope to see you and a guest at this event and others throughout the year. I'd also encourage each of you to find someone who doesn't participate in a local unit. Encourage them, invite them to visit and hopefully join a unit or circle. What better way to fulfill our PUR- POSE and extend the reach of United Methodist Women! God bless each of you and I pray that you all have a Blessed New Year! Sheila Hare Conference Secretary
