1 Issue 6 - November 17, 2014 DRAGON NEWS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF BEAVERTON SW Blanton Street Beaverton, OR Jill O'Neill, Principal phone fax attendance line Get to School Safely Upcoming Events NOVEMBER 18 - Pie Pick Up, 2:00-4:00 pm 18 - MS Open House, 6:30 pm 26 - Schools Closed 27 - Thanksgiving Holiday 28 - Schools Closed DECEMBER 1 - Grading Day, no students 2 - HS Open House, 6:30 pm 3 - Grad Orders Due 3 - Grad Night Tickets on Sale 9-8th Grade Parent Night, 6:30 pm schools/isb/ Thank you to all parents and students who are using extra caution in our parking lot and on Blanton Street. Drivers dropping students off should only use the main parking lot entrance. Saving a few seconds by cutting through the Special Education Office entrance endangers our students and is not worth the risk. Please drive slowly in the school parking lot and look for students and staff crossing the parking lot. Again, saving a small amount of time by speeding through the parking lot is not worth the risk to our students' and staff's safety. Please use your turning signal to communicate your intentions to turn or merge with other drivers and pedestrians. Please discuss your safe routes to school with your child(ren). Students who walk to their bus stop or to school need to be sure they are visible to drivers. Here are some helpful strategies: Place reflective tape on clothing and/or backpacks. Wear light colored and/or reflective clothing. Carry a flashlight. Walk on the sidewalk when available. When no sidewalk is available, walk against traffic (on the left) so you can see vehicles and be seen by drivers. Be aware of traffic - unplug your earbuds and take off your headphones so you can hear traffic and be aware of your surroundings. Cross the street in marked crosswalks when available. Look left, then right, then left again before crossing a street. Pay attention to driveways - look for cars entering or exiting. Senior Class Pie and Poinsettia Fundraiser Thank you to all who have supported the senior class pie and poinsettia fundraiser. The pies can be picked up Tuesday, November 18th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Poinsettias can be picked up December 2nd. Any questions, please contact Shireen Bauer at sasbauer@comcast.net. Opening Minds Experiencing Cultures Respecting Our World Student Recognition Congratulations to Katie Kwan! Her entry into the Beaverton City Library Teen Writing Contest titled "Regret," received a third place award in the middle school division. District Goal: All students will show continuous progress toward their personal learning goals, developed in collaboration with teachers and parents, and will be prepared for post-secondary education and career success. 2 2 Dragon News Issue 6 - November 17, 2014 pg. 2 Also, congratulations to ISB's 7th/8th grade girls Cross Country Team for placing 3rd at the District Meet this fall! They received a trophy from THPRD to display in our awards case. Encourage your family and friends to link through our website and ISB will receive a percentage of your purchase to fund IB Exam Scholarships and student activities. ISB Families Team Up Thank you to our students and families who met at Melilah Park this past Saturday for a community-building service project. Our school has partnered with THPRD to adopt Melilah Park through an invasive-species removal project. The Senior Class spent an afternoon there in September and there will be another opportunity December 15 for families to join in the fun and service. The Beaverton School District recognizes the diversity and worth of all individuals and groups. It is the policy of the Beaverton School Disrict that there wilk beno discrimination or harassment of individuals or groups based on race, color religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, marital status, age, veteran s status, genetic information or disability in any educational programs, activities or employment.
3 Dragon News Issue 6 - November 17, 2014 pg. 3 Senior Graduation Information On Wednesday, Seniors will receive information on ordering graduation announcements, caps, and gowns. All graduates must wear a black cap and gown during the commencement ceremony. Students who need financial assistance should see Mrs. Muilenburg. Seniors will also be receiving a confirmation of the name that will appear on their diploma and in the commencement program. They are asked to share this information with their families and return with signatures to Mr. Ruff before Thanksgiving. Culture Week We are gearing up now for our Annual Culture Week and invite you to collaborate with us. We are looking for ISB family members to present workshop sessions sharing expertise and experiences from around the world. Another way to help is to connect our Culture Week Committee to community members who have expertise and experiences they can share. Please read the attached information about Culture Week and share with those you think might be interested in partnering with our school. School and District Report Cards/Reporte de Desempeño del Distrito Escolar y las Escuelas School and district report cards for the school year are available at: (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). I welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District. We are making progress. State report cards began fourteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. You will notice that the report cards issued this year are significantly different from prior years. Elementary and middle school ratings are based mostly on the growth of each student on the State Reading and Math tests. Half of a high school s rating is based on graduation rates. Detailed data about how our school rating was computed is also available at the link above. At International School of Beaverton WE are committed to using these ratings to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. You ll find our school improvement plan posted on our website after December 2nd. During the year I will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success. If you have questions about our report card, please contact me. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them! Thank you!
Muchas gracias! Lost & Found Our next donation date is Nov. 19th. Anything older than 6 weeks will be cleared out on that day and donated to Beaverton Clothes Closet. Please have your student stop by the Lost & Found area (beside the ping-pong table in the main hall) to check if they have something there. We also have a weekly updated online album where you can see if there is anything that looks familiar: 8CZ8IWvDw. Broadway for Beaverton Schools - Cinderella Save-the-Date. 5 Dragon News Issue 6 - November 17, 2014 pg. 5 Thanks to our Volunteers The middle school Harvest Social took place on Friday, Nov. 7th and was a huge success. The kids had a fabulous time and this is all in part to the hard work and donations from all of you. Big thanks to all the volunteers that took time out of their busy day to help out. It truly does take a village! And another big thanks to all of you that donated water and goodies for the cake walk. This was an overwhelming hit with the kids. A special and well deserving thanks to Shoshana Russell and Monica Calderon for being the team leads. They did an amazing job ensuring that all moving pieces were in sync and that everything ran smoothly.and it sure did! Great job to the Middle School Student Council for dedicating themselves and working hard during the party, too. Don't Forget Those Company Matches! ISB Parents who work for Intel Corp. and volunteer with the school, remember to log your volunteer hours in the Intel Involved Volunteer Matching Tool before the end of the year. Each volunteer hour earns Friends of International School of Beaverton (FRISB) matching funds. Enter hours by selecting Friends of International School of Beaverton. Hours are totaled by 2014 calendar year and paid out one time, so don t let your hours go by unmatched!
