We re off to a great start once again after a long winter break! It only took a little while before we were all back into the swing of things! Students can use the New Year to get a fresh start on the remaining school year. This is an excellent opportunity to identify an area needing improvement and then work towards accomplishing that goal. Whether the goal is to develop organizational skills; practice basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts; apply a variety of reading strategies, arrive to school on time; or to improve academic or learning skills, there is no time like the present. Please work with your child to establish goals, collaborate with his or her teacher, and assist with an action plan for improvement. The New Year will be a productive one for each and every student and the hard work will pay off! Winter Assessments Children in grades K-2 are in process of taking the mclass assessments. These are done on an individual basis with the teacher to determine the reading level of each student. Students in grades 3-5 are taking the MAP-R assessment which also assesses students reading skills. Teachers use these assessments along with daily performance to plan for student instruction. Students in grades K-5 will also take the MAP-P or MAP-M math assessment in the computer lab. If you have specific questions about these assessments or how your child is performing, please talk to the teacher directly. Reading Homework Please continue to stress reading every night with your children. They should read, or be read to for a minimum of 30 minutes each night. This is their homework!! You can practice mathematical fluency at home by using the online resources on the school website. Please contact the media center if you need passwords for any sites. Emergency Dismissal With the possibility of snow in the next few months, please review emergency closing procedures with your child. It is not possible for the office to handle large numbers of students trying to call home or a parent s office in such an emergency. Please make sure that your child knows what to do in case of an emergency closing. Also, please ensure that your emergency form in the school office is updated and that the information is the same as you have told your child. The next page includes different ways you can receive information about inclement weather. Galway Elementary will not contact parents for school closings or delayed openings. Those decisions are made by the superintendent of schools. Early school dismissal will be announced by MCPS by 11:30 am. Galway will supplement that with a Galway411 and a connect-ed call. Parents can also sign up to receive alerts specific to their child s school. Kids Ride Free program The Montgomery County Department of Transportation, Division of Transit Services, continues its Kids Ride Free program in The Kids Ride Free program provides free rides on county Ride On buses and certain Metrobus routes within Montgomery County on weekdays from 2:00 8:00 p.m. for students age 18 and under who are county residents. The program operates year-round. Students should show their Youth Cruiser SmarTrip Card when boarding buses. School photo identification cards used in the past are replaced by the Youth Cruiser SmarTrip Card starting January 1, SmarTrip cards can be purchased for $2 from some schools, all Montgomery County libraries, TRIPS stores, and the Treasury Division office. The list of locations is included on the Kids Ride Free webpage at PARCC Information In the upcoming months, you will be getting more information about the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) assessment that will be given in grades 3 through 5 in both Mathematics and Reading. MCPS is offering parent evenings to help inform parents about the upcoming assessment. The next parent evening will be held on February 2, 2015 at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland from 6:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Galway Chronicle 10
