1 September 2010 Greetings, Welcome to the Independence Division, Response Area 3 monthly community letter. Please check the Independence Division Response Area map at to see which area you re in. If you re not in area 3, contact either Sergeant Rod Farley, RA 1 or Sergeant Greg Venn, RA2 to sign up for that area s letter. Please encourage your neighbors to read our monthly newsletter. Response Area 3 - Community Meeting There will be a Response Area 3 Community Meeting on September 23, 2010 at 7:00 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Road. This is for all residents and businesses that are in Response Area 3 (See Map on next page) Response Area Commander Roseann DeTommaso, along with other members of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department will be presenting information on crimes in the area. There will also be a question and answer session. The meet and greet will start at 6:30pm. Please contact Officer Jeff Hunter [email protected] or call him if you have any questions.

2 Response Area 3 boundaries are: Inbound side of Independence Blvd - just before W.T. Harris, Margaret Wallace Road up to Idlewild Road and the inbound side of Lawyers Road. We also include the Intersection of Idlewild Road and W.T. Harris from Independence Blvd to Just before Albemarle Road. Please see the above map to find your neighborhood.

3 Community Meetings are conducted in neighborhoods throughout Response Area 3. If your neighbor hood, church or business would like to set up a community meeting or have an officer attend a meeting to answer questions, please contact Officer Jeff Hunter: [email protected] or call If you would like a police officer to conduct a Security Survey and make suggestions on ways to improve the physical security of your residence or business please contact Officer Jeff Hunter [email protected] or call Crime Stats Congratulations to Officer Teyawna Hardy who has been selected as the Independence Division Officer of the Month for August! (She is assigned to Response Area 3) Officer Hardy was nominated for her exceptional attention to detail and her amazing ability to locate suspects and suspect vehicles, even off-duty. Her supervisor noted that in the last year, Officer Hardy has been involved in more felony cases and arrests during her off-duty time than some on duty officers have in the same time period. In June 2009, she observed some suspicious subjects parking a suspicious vehicle in her apartment complex; she investigated and discovered the vehicle was stolen. She was able to identify one of the subjects and an arrest for possession of stolen vehicle was made. Again in June 2009 and again in her apartment complex Officer Hardy was alerted by her vehicle alarm; her investigation resulted in two subjects being identified in breaking into vehicles in parking lots of two apartment complexes.

4 In May 2010, Officer Hardy was again off-duty when she was involved in the arrest of another subject trying to break into vehicles in her apartment complex. Later that month, again while off-duty she located an abandoned vehicle. Investigations that followed indicated that it was the vehicle involved in several business robberies. In July 2010, Officer Hardy was enroute to an off duty job when she spotted a vehicle involved in an earlier armed robbery. She followed same as she waited for officers to assist. The vehicle stopped and officers were able to make two arrests for armed robbery from person. In August 2010, Officer Hardy was on duty when she observed a subject wanted for robbery in another county and wanted for questioning in this city for a homicide that had occurred the previous day. Not only did Officer Hardy identify the passenger as the person but also observed the vehicle he occupied was listed in a BOLO. Officers responded to assist and were able to locate the vehicle the subjects were apprehended when they exited from their apartment. Officer Hardy s reputation is growing as an officer who is able to recall and find the most wanted individual. I don t believe it is just a coincidence that Officer Hardy always seems to be in the right place at the right time. I believe she has been successful in capturing so many criminals because she consistently knows what to look for and is persistent in locating it. Officer Hardy will have access to the Officer of the Month parking space for the next few weeks, have her choice of days off during one of the next two pay cycles, and will have her name added to the plaque on the wall in the Reception area. And new this month, she will receive a $10 gift certificate to The Southern Gourmet.

5 Larceny From Auto s In many cases people are leaving their vehicles unlocked and leaving valuables inside of their vehicles. Do not leave windows open, even a few inches. Suspects are forcing windows open or reaching in and unlocking the vehicle. Do not leave your GPS, laptops or ipods in your car. These are some of the many stolen items from vehicles. Residential B & E s How can you help? If you see a burglar in action, get a good description of the person, their car and tag number. Write it down and call the police immediately! (911) If you are burglarized: Do not enter your house if you return home and find signs that a burglary is taking place or has taken place. Go to a safe place immediately, such as a neighbor's home and call the police.

6 1. If you enter into your home and find evidence of a burglary, call the police immediately. Do not touch anything or move anything around. Give the police a chance to gather evidence that may have been left. Sometimes evidence is the only way we are able to solve a case, if you touch items or move items, any chance of obtaining fingerprints is destroyed. 2. Try to determine what has been taken and prepare a list of stolen items (with serial numbers if possible) to assist police in their investigation. You should have a list of any valuable items, the make, model and serial numbers. Do not wait until you are a victim, do this now. Las divisiones son Hickory Grove y Independence. Al mismo tiempo pedimos su colaboración para que haga extensiva esta invitación a su comunidad, congregaciones y otras personas que vivan en el área. El propósito de dicha reunión es para conocerse y tener un foro sobre temas de interés relacionados a su cálida de vida dentro de sus comunidades. Esta invitación es dirigida a todas las razas de la comunidad. Como viviendo todos juntos en la comunidad, es necesario tener los puntos de vista de todos. La reunión se llevara a cabo el DIA jueves Augusto 12, 2010 a las 7pm. El local de la reunión será en la Iglesia Español Baptista Hickory Grove, ubicada en 7424 East W.T. Harris Blvd. La reunión se va realizar en tres tandas. 1. La presentación de los encargados de cada división. 2. Serán formados dos grupos: uno en ingles y uno en español. 3. Reunir los dos grupos para hacer un resumen acerca de los temas tratados por grupo Esperamos su valiosa presencia en este evento de gran interés para ustedes y también el Departamento de Policía Charlotte Mecklenburg.
