5 INTRODUCTION Many people s conception of nursing is limited to caring for frail or sick old people in a home or hospital ward. It is true that more nurses than ever are needed to provide that type of care. But many nursing specialities and careers can take you beyond. Nurse midwives, help deliver babies and help women to stay healthy and avoid complications during and after pregnancy prenatal also known as neonatal or obstetric nurses monitor and care for women before, while, and after they deliver babies. Peri operative nurses assist before, during and after surgery. Public health nurses attempt to keep entire communities as healthy as possible by preventing and controlling the spread of disease and the incidence of environmental related health problems, as well as by educating people how to maintain their wellness. They are employed by community organisations ranging in size from camps and schools to city health departments. They are recruited at Government Hospitals & Private Nursing Homes and big organizations to look after their employees. And they all make them earn both money as well as social reputation. LABS State-of-the-art classroom and nursing labs designed as per international standards with latest teaching aids and furnished with high end imported equipment for clinical practice along with LCD projectors. It includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness and care of the ill. Nurses strive to achieve the best possible for quality of life for their patients, regardless of disease or disability. The training for Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife is offered as a 2 years duration course. The course covers all the related topics of the study field. Upon completion of the training the candidate can be register himself/herself as Registered ANM. 13 GNM (General Nursing and Midwifery) (Affiliation to UP State Medical Faculty, Lucknow and INC, New Delhi) Duration : 3 Years Eligibility : 10+2 with any Stream Today nurses constitute the largest single group of female health workers in world. Nursing is basically a women s profession, however a small number of courses at the lower level are open to male candidates (Male Nurses) also. The Indian Nursing Council is the regulatory authority for nursing education. Qualified nurses are also required to register themselves with the council. A number of independent Schools and Nursing Colleges offer the GNM courses, however, it is ideal to associate with Colleges of Nursing that are affiliated to universities. Students must ensure that they are seeking admission to Institutions that are approved by the Council. Shall have one regular examination followed by supplementary examination in a year 2. The candidates, if fail in more than two subjects in any nursing program they can be promoted to next year 3. A candidate can take any number of attempts with a condition that maximum period allowed is 6 years. However, all papers need to be cleared before appearing in the final examination Eligibility for Admission to Examination A candidate shall be eligible for the admission to the State Council / Board Examination if the Principal of the school certifies that: (a) She/He has completed not less than eleven months of the course (b) She/He have attended % of the formal instructions given on each subject and 100% of the clinical field experience in each area/subject separately during the academic year, however, the total clinical / field experience prescribed must be completed before the final Council/Board examinations and before the issue of Diploma (The Diploma shall not be awarded to the student till she/he has completed the clinical / field requirements (c) The overall performance of the student and her/his conduct during the entire academic year shall be satisfactory. (d) The student has passed in the internal assessment in each subject and practical(s) (e) The record of practical experience is complete. 10

15 Diploma in Operation Theatre Technician Diploma in Operation Theatre Technician (Affiliated to State Medical Faculty, Lucknow) Duration: 2 Years Eligibility: Pass with PCM/PCM An operation theatre technician is a person who looks after all the work and management of the operation theatre including managing the patients in & out of OT, looking after all the surgical instruments : their sterilization, arrangement of OT table, dressing table, instrument table, anaesthesia table as well as management of the staff. Looking after the drugs required for surgery, anaesthetic gases, drapes & linen & its sterilization. He / She also assist the surgeon during the operations. In short, an operation theater technician has to manage & organize the entire OT without whom no surgeon can operate & neither can a hospital or a nursing home run or be complete. Diploma in Optometry Technician Diploma in Optometry Technician (Affiliated to State Medical Faculty, Lucknow) Duration: 2 Years Eligibility: Pass with PCB/PCM Optometric technicians perform vision tests and eye examinations. They operate equipment and record data for review by the optometrist. From dispensing glasses and lenses, optometric technicians help patients choose frames and contacts and do fittings and adjustments. They may also have administrative duties such as scheduling appointments and maintaining inventory. Optometric technicians must know physiology and anatomy, particularly that of the eye and eye muscles. Additionally, they must study the optical principles of light in order to effectively dispense lenses. They take case histories and perform clinical procedures, and they must be trained in first aid and vision therapy. In the optometrist's office and lab, optometric technicians must maintain sterile and sanitary conditions and know the laws regulating the field. Diploma in Dialysis Technician Diploma in Dialysis Technician (Affiliated to State Medical Faculty, Lucknow) Duration: 2 Years Eligibility: Pass with PCB/PCM Dialysis technician's main job is to operate haemodialysis machines to perform dialysis treatment for patients having kidney failure. Haemodialysis machines carry patient's blood through tubes containing water, sugar solution that sterilizes the blood and brings it back to the patient s body. Other important tasks of dialysis technicians include cleaning the area where the blood will be extracted, explaining the procedure and calculating blood flow and fluid removal. They also record the patient's condition before and after the procedure by noting temperature, blood pressure, weight and respiratory rate. 11

16 Diploma in CT Scan Technician Diploma in CT Scan Technician (Affiliated to State Medical Faculty, Lucknow) Duration: 2 Years Eligibility: Pass with PCB/PCM One of the primary goals of CT scan technology courses is to prepare students to use Computerized Tomography equipment for diagnostic purposes in hospitals and healthcare facilities. The courses provide students with a background in diagnostic imaging and equipment. It familiarizes students with how the equipment works to produce the best image quality. Often, students work with patients and prepare them for CT scan tests and results. CT Technologists are sometimes referred to as CAT Scan Techs (Computerized Axial Tomography) or CT Techs. Some job duties of a CT Technologist may include positioning patients for CT scans using immobilization and protective equipment as necessary, appropriately setting the controls of the related equipment, monitoring equipment and patient, making adjustments as necessaryassisting radiologist with imaging procedures, starting IVs, and injecting contrast, if applicable, dispensing oral contrast to patients for CT scans, assisting radiologist with interventional CT procedures, evaluating CT scans for technical quality, collating processed images in sequence of exposure and appropriate labeling. The students are skilled to perform procedures that aid in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. This program equips candidates with the necessary academic and technical skills required. 12
