Health policy, such as advocacy, policy development and analysis, and health care delivery systems will be explored The concepts of vulnerability, diversity, determinants of health, and health care disparities provide the foundation ofcaring for vulnerable populations. The issues related to the role of nursing leaders in being active in policy making that can influence vulnerable populations are explored III. Justification This course combines health policy content from a course that was in the original curriculum with content on vulnerable populations and health care disparities. Vulnerability and health care disparities are recognized as two significant issues in meeting the needs of specific population groups in society. This course addresses a recognized deficit in the original Nurse Educator curriculum, and is based on the recommendations of the AACN Essentials of Masters Education in Nursing document. Integration ofcontent on vulnerable populations to the course enables student to better understand the impact of health policies on the health ofpopulations in the local community.

7 Additional AnnouncementslReguirements with Academic Honesty Statement: Every KSU student is responsible for upholding the provisions ofthe Student Code of Conduct, as published in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs. Incidents ofalleged academic misconduct will be handled through the established procedures ofthe University Judiciary Program, which includes either an "informal" resolution by a faculty member, resulting in a grade adjustment, or a formal hearing procedure, which may subject a student to the Code ofconduct's minimum one semester suspension requirement. Preparation for class and active participation in class discussion are expectations. The syllabus may change. The capacity to receive and check by transferring and receiving electronic files on a regular basis is a requirement. Please refer to the WellStar College of Health and Human Services Student Handbook regarding Policy on Bloodbome Pathogens and Academic Honesty. Failure to practice within the Code of Ethics for Nurses (American Nurses Association, 2001) will result in failure of the course. The Policy and Procedure for withdrawing from the University or a particular class are printed in the KSU Catalog and the KSU Student Handbook. The last day to withdraw from this course without academic penalty is Academic Course Withdrawal Students who find that they cannot continue in the university for the entire semester because of illness or other reason should complete an official withdrawal fonn. Forms may be obtained from the Office ofthe Registrar. Students who officially withdraw from university with the approval of the University Dean will be assigned grades of "W". This grade will not affect the overall schollli>'tic average. Those students who stop attending classes and notify no one are usually assigned failing

8 grades which jeopardize their chances of future academic success. The policy and procedure for withdrawal from the university or a particular class are published in the Kennesaw State University Catalog and Student Handbook. If you are anticipating an emergency call, please put your cell phone on silence and notify your instructor. KSU Writing Center The KSU Writing Center is a free service offered to all KSU students. Experienced writing assistants work with you throughout the writing process (on concerns such as topic development, revision, research, documentation, granunar, and mechanics) although assistants cannot edit or proofread your paper for you. Appointments are strongly encouraged. For more information or to make an appointment, visit or stop by Room 242 in the English Building. Contact the Writing Center to schedule an "outreach visit." Writing assistants are available to visit classes in all disciplines to encourage student use of services. To schedule a brief outreach, simply your request to writingcenter@kennesaw.edu. If a class meets exclusively online, the center would be happy to provide an electronic handout. Guidelines for Specific Course Requirements: 1. Class preparation/participation: Students are expected to come to class prepared and to participate in the discussion and class activities. Participation will be evaluated using a rubric, and will include peer evaluation. (Weekly) 2. Curriculum project: The purpose of this project is to critically analyze the components of nursing curriculum. The project will include 4 short papers that address: a. Analysis of the mission and goals of the curriculum. b. Analysis of the curriculum philosophy and/or model/framework. c. Analysis of the curriculum plan based on the AACN Essentials ofbsn education. d. Analysis of the evaluation plan and strategies for measuring outcomes. Critique of the evaluation plan should address the fit of the model/framework with the mission and philosophy. 3. Scholarly paper: The final paper for the course is designed to address the change process. For this paper students will select one of the recommendations presented in chapter 13 of the Benner, et al book to explore in greater depth. This will involve a literature review on the issue. The paper will address the following points: a. Introduction and statement of purpose. b. Analysis of the issue based on the literature review. c. Application ofchange theory in discussion both barriers to change and facilitators of change. d. Recommendations for moving forward in bringing about the recommended change.
