1 COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: CREDIT: NUR3837 HEALTH CARE ISSUES TWO (2) SEMESTER HOURS MEETING TIME & LOCATION: ONLINE, SPRING 2010 INSTRUCTOR: ONLINE OFFICE HOURS: Patricia Posey-Goodwin, M.S.N., RN Building 8, Room TBA weekly in News COURSE DESCRIPTION: Focuses on the nursing profession and current major issues and problems that concern it, and provides a forum for the exploration and evaluation of concerns germane to contemporary nursing. Social forces influencing changes in the nursing profession are analyzed in terms of historical antecedents and their current manifestations. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK: No textbook, but reading of individually selected journal articles is required. This course covers many facets of health care and no one book covers all of the content. The student is expected to locate relevant reference material and to be conversant with professional publications that address specific issues. The American Nurse, official newspaper of the American Nurses Association, and The Florida Nurse, the official publication of the Florida Nurses Association are recommended reading. Scholarly journals are to be used. Wikipedia or similar online resources are not to be used. SPECIAL TECHNOLOGY TO BE UTILIZED BY STUDENTS: Students must be computer literate to participate in this online course. They must have the ability to use search engines for supplementary course information, discussions, drop box & teaching materials. Students must be able to develop PowerPoint presentations and access a variety of media. It is available on the computers at UWF. Students must have Internet Access (The faster, the better!) and an Argus Account. If you need additional software (such as Adobe Acrobat, Flash Player, etc) to view all the components of the course, go to the UWF elearning home page at and click on the link for Software Downloads. You can download them at no cost. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students who successfully complete this course should be able to:

2 I. Content A. Use the concepts of nursing theory, research and practice, based on the foundation of the arts and sciences courses, in the provision of care to diverse clients of all ages 1. Interpret the impact of selected issues on the advancement of nursing and health care. 2. Analyze the issues and problems in terms of historical antecedents and social forces, which influenced their development. C. Describe and use appropriate teaching-learning theories to design, implement, and evaluate educational experiences with clients of all ages and abilities II. Critical Thinking A. Use effective critical thinking skills (e.g., observation, analysis, synthesis) through the nursing process to provide and direct quality care to diverse clients of all ages 1. Interpret the impact of selected issues on the advancement of nursing and health care. 2. Analyze the issues and problems in terms of historical antecedents and social forces, which influenced their development. 3. Explain and defend own position on the selected issues and problems. III. Communication B. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team 1. A student determined to be cheating on NUR3837 assignments will be given a 0 (zero). This incident will be documented and reported to the Department Director. It is within the nursing student role to assume responsibility for learning. As a self-directed student, each individual will complete weekly assignments. COPYRIGHT/PLAGIARISM POLICY: Faculty reserve the right to request an electronic copy of all written course work or students course assignments completed as an agent of or on behalf of the UWF Nursing Department. This is subject to evaluation for copyright violation or plagiarism through the appropriate means as determined by the Nursing Department. Faculty reserve the right to evaluate all course assignments for copyright or plagiarism violations. Plagiarism is defined by the university as the act of representing the ideas, words, creations, or work of another as one s own. Should a student be found plagiarizing in a paper, nursing care plan, or log, the student will be reported by the faculty member to the Chair of the Department of Nursing and follow the process described in the university s Student Life handbook. Plagiarism is a serious offense in academia and may result in expulsion from the university. From the Student Life Handbook For complete information regarding Academic Misconduct, refer to the UWF Student Handbook or contact Student Affairs in Building 21, TurnItIn: UWF maintains a university license agreement for an online text matching service called TurnItIn. The instructor may use the TurnItIn service to determine the originality of student papers. If the instructor submits your paper to TurnItIn, it will be stored in a TurnItIn database for as long as the service remains in existence.

4 If you object to this storage of your paper: ASSISTANCE: 1. You must notify the instructor no later than two weeks after the start of this class. 2. The instructor will utilize other services and techniques to evaluate your work for evidence of appropriate authorship practices. The American Disabilities Act will be adhered to in NUR Students with a documented disability who require specific course related accommodations should contact the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) by at sdrc@uwf.edu or by phone at (850) SDRC will provide the student with a letter for the instructor that will specify any recommended accommodations. The student is responsible for discussing implementation of any special accommodations related to personal or course conflicts with the course coordinator. This must be completed by the second week of class. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT ASSIGNMENTS: Most Assignments will be due by 11:59 PM on Mondays unless otherwise specified. Late work may receive a 1 point deduction for every day that the assignment is late. Circumstances vary, so if something comes up, please let me know ahead of time. Submit documents in.rtf or WORD format. Do not submit work any other format. If I am unable to open a document because it is submitted in the wrong format, it will be treated as late work with points deducted until it is resubmitted in.rtf or WORD. OTHER POLICIES: See Student Handbook for further policies on plagiarism, disability, and other matters of interest and importance. TEACHING/LEARNING METHODS: As a healthcare professional, it is essential that you learn about current trends and issues affecting the practice of nursing. You will be doing individual work, as well as cooperative/collaborative group presentations. Also, you will learn first hand how groups work. You may already be aware that some group members are unwilling to give up control, others will do what they are told, and some choose to do minimal work. It is time for you to learn to deal directly and effectively with group members during project management of a group presentation. All groups will use Group for all communication. There are to be no phone calls, no outside meetings, and no private s or text messages about this course. This way the faculty will be able to evaluate the process of sharing ideas. Open communication is vital to your group success. You must learn to manage communication around classes, clinicals, work, family/individual time, and different global time zones.

5 This will assist the student toward becoming a nurse leader, who is articulate regarding health care issues. The major catalyst by which the course objectives are taught is by student group presentations. Additionally, this class will have graded online discussions and evaluations of each group presentation. Students may use, but are not limited to, the following: Online discussion PowerPoint Case Studies Films and video tapes Handouts and worksheets EVALUATION CRITERIA: 1. Participation 50% 2. Group Presentation of a Health Care Issue 50% GRADING SCALE: A A C * B D * B D 63-69* B F Below 63* C *Constitutes a failure in this course. C LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND ASSIGNMENTS: A. PARTICIPATION (50% of grade: 100 points) 1. Guidelines for Online Discussions Weeks 2, 3, 4, & 16 : Participation in online discussions in Discussion is required. All students are expected to prepare for and participate in online discussions as a means of learning and demonstrating achievement of course objectives. The group discussions are designed to promote analysis and resolution of relevant issues. Each student is responsible for being prepared to participate in every discussion and to be knowledgeable about information currently disseminated about professional nursing and related health care events. Be sure to follow the directions to obtain the maximum points. a. Content to be included: i. Relevant posting to the issue/question/situation ii. Responding to at least one peer comment iii. Reading at least 50% of peer comments iv. Citing a current scholarly journal article b. Methods: i. Online participation is based on quality and not quantity. ii. Discussion, questions, and journal article are to be relevant and thoughtprovoking versus challenging.

6 iii. Students will not use Discussion forums for social discourse. c. Evaluation: Each discussion is worth a total of 20 points resulting in a total of 80 points for all online discussions. Grading Criteria for each Discussion: i. Relevant posting to the issue/question/situation 5 points ii. Responding to at least one peer comment 5 points iii. Reading at least 50% of peer comments 5 points iv. Citing in APA format a relevant and current journal article related to the discussion. List two important facts that the author uses to support the main idea. Be sure to include a working link to the cite. 5 points TOTAL 20 points 2. Guidelines for Evaluation/Reading Weeks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, & 15: Completion of online presentation reading and evaluation is required. a. Evaluation: Each evaluation/reading is worth a total of 2 points resulting in a total of 20 points for all completed evaluations. Read 100% of presentation. Grading Criteria: Your professional response provides complete and relevant feedback. Read 100% of presentation and complete the evaluation. 2 points TOTAL 2 points B. GROUP PRESENTATION OF HEALTH CARE ISSUE (50% of grade) 1. Guidelines: Each group is responsible for a major online presentation of one health care issue. First, brainstorm ways to approach the topic. Define the issues involved. Determine what makes it a problem. Second, negotiate the workload responsibilities and times for online meetings. Third, collaboratively discuss your ideas and write your project together. Fourth, produce a PowerPoint and evaluation of student learning outcomes. The group will be responsible for posting a one hour PowerPoint presentation online related to this issue to facilitate learning and understanding of that issue. The bibliography should follow APA format and come from professional journals/literature. 2. Content to be included: a. student learning outcomes: At the end of this presentation, the student will b. brief background information about the issue c. social, historical and philosophical factors that are related to the issue d. pros and cons of the issue, as well as different perspectives e. the importance of this issue for nursing practice today f. develop an evaluation tool addressing student learning outcomes. This tool must be accessible to students in the course for completion.

7 3. Methods: All groups will use Group for all communication. There are to be no phone calls, no outside meetings, and no private s or text messages about this course. Your challenge is to present the issue in a creative and thoughtful manner. A variety of media (film excerpts, art, etc.) may be used. It is important to make the resulting online discussion an interactive and thought-provoking session that employs critical thinking and that has practical value. 4. Questions to ponder: (they may assist you in your organization and presentation) a. What is the issue? b. Why is it essential for nursing? c. What are the social elements that influence the issue? d. Have there been changes in this issue over the course of history? How has it changed and why? e. What are some of the philosophies that affect this issue f. How would the discussion of the issue enhance nursing practice? g. What is the meaning of this issue for your/our personal and professional development? 5. Evaluation: The online presentation is worth a total of 100 points. Grading Criteria: a. Develops project time frame and reports weekly on member participation and time frame for project completion 15 points b. Quality of student learning outcomes 10 points c. APA References/Bibliography 10 points d. Quality of outline/content 10 points e. Depth and validity of subject material 15 points f. Creativity of presentation 15 points g. Ability to meet student learning outcomes using evaluation tool 10 points h. Both sides of the issue are clearly explained and stimulates discussion 15 points TOTAL: 100 points
