1 CHATTANOOGA STATE COMMUNITY COLLEGE CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE BUSINESS AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS DIVISIONS Course Syllabus MG 224 Entrepreneurship Instructor: Ed Southeard Class, Credit Hours: 3 / 3 Office/phone: Omni B130, Semester: Fall via elearn Time/Room: 11:00am-12:15pm, M-W COURSE DESCRIPTION: Capstone course that applies skills learned throughout the previous courses in the Small Business Management Program; focus on starting, financing and operating a small business, while building a comprehensive business plan. Prerequisite: MG 103, BU 114, MG 165. Corequisites: None TEXTBOOK: Small Business Management by Longenecker, Moore and Petty: 13 th Edition, Thompson-Southwestern Press Supplemental Website: A supplemental website within CSTCC elearn will be utilized for communication and other activities associated with the class. I. PROGRAM AND COURSE STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES ASSESSED: PSLO1: Describe the operations and functions of various business models. CSLO2: Recognize the importance of innovative techniques and apply techniques by business manager. CSLO9: Define and develop a sound operations management system and create policies for managing the personnel function of a small business. into a cohesive and complete document that could be presented to an investor for consideration. PSLO2: Describe the impact of the legal and global environments of business. CSLO6: Identify the components of the franchise agreement and know what to look for in the legal commitments between the franchisee and franchisor. PSLO3: Analyze business data. CSLO7: Develop pro-forma income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow analysis for a new business. CSLO8: Identify the sources of funding for a small business in the start-up, growth, and maturity stages of development. PSLO5: Apply strategic planning to business decision making. CSLO2: Recognize the importance of innovative techniques and apply techniques by business manager. CSLO3: Define market segmentation and its importance to a small business. Answer the questions of who, why, what, how, where, and when do consumers buy. CSLO9: Define and develop a sound operations management system and create policies for managing the personnel function of a small business. CSLO10: Identify the important features in location and controlling the operations of a small retail business. CSLO11: Formulate a business plan for a start-up business by combining the critical elements of small business into a cohesive and complete document and develop a presentation to an investor for consideration. PSLO6: Apply communication skills in diverse business settings. CSLO3: Define market segmentation and its importance to a small business. Answer the questions of who, why, what, how, where, and when do consumers buy. into a cohesive and complete document and develop a presentation to an investor for consideration. 2 ASSESSMENTS II. WRITTEN/DISCUSSION TOPICS (six) Students participate in six in class discussion forums in which they work in teams to think critically and analyze a workplace situation, develop a solution and present (orally) that solution to the rest of the class, with supporting concepts. In these discussions, teams must work together to engage in developing and presenting research applicable to the subject matter. These assignments will provide students with a more detailed approach in applying analytical skills that are necessary to starting a business. Discussion Topic 1 on Franchising (PSLO 2; CSLO 2, 6) Discussion Topic 2 on Buying Existing Business (PSLO 3, 5, 6; CSLO 2, 3, 8) Discussion Topic 3 on Developing financing needs and sources of funds (PSLO 3; CSLO 7, 8) Discussion Topic 4 on Create a Pro Forma Income Statement (PSLO 3, 6, 8; CSLO 7, 11) Discussion Topic 5 on Marketing a Business (PSLO 6, 8; CSLO 1, 2, 3, 4) Discussion Topic 6 on Importance of Management and Business Locations (PSLO 1, 5; CSLO 2, 9, 10) III. TESTS (two) Students demonstrate mastery of material through discussion questions and case studies. on detailing how to research, knowing the process, and contractual agreement for buying a franchise and existing business. Proforma income statements will be setup. Marketing will be included in this test. Students will demonstrate knowledge of mission statement, goals and objectives, and SWOT analysis. (PSLO 1, 2, 3, 5, 6; CSLO 1 7) Test 2 on Management Strategies, Operations, Human Resources, Inventories, and Risk Management. Components of a Business Plan (PSLO 1, 5; CSLO 1, 2, 9) FINAL PROJECT Students demonstrate mastery of course content by working in teams to develop a business plan for the Small Business Development Center. Students will make presentation to prospective business owner and the Director of the S.B.D.C. (PSLO 1,3,5, 6, 8; CSLO 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,11) IV. PARTICIPATION/SPECIAL EVENTS Attendance and participation are critical to business success. The school s QEP on Work Ethic is directly applicable to this assessment. A special assignment has been determined for students to gain real world experiences by developing a business plan for a startup operation. This event will be coordinated with the Small Business Development Center. Students will develop a business plan working in small teams and upon completion, will make a presentation to the owner of the company. Students are expected to be in class, on time, and prepared for class discussions as well as participate in special activities as they arise. (PSLO 4, 5, 6, 9; CSLO 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, 10, 11)

Instructional Activities The primary objective of the course is to learn how to set-up a business. The focus will be for students to gain understanding on how to develop a business plan. A project has been made available by the Small Business Development Center to develop a plan for a new start-up business. The project will allow students to work in teams and gain skills in working in groups along with developing skills in research. The project will be graded on the input of students in terms of completeness, accuracy, teamwork, and presentation of a final document.

4 VII. Tests will consist of multiple choice and short answer questions directly related to the material in the text. There will be three (2) tests giving during the semester. If, for any reason, you are unable to take a test within the scheduled test window, you must notify the instructor in advance to make other arrangements. Ten percent of a student s grade will be reflective of the participation in the class. This will be determined based on group participation, promptness in submitting assignments, and attendance. CSLO5: Identify the advantages and disadvantages of buying an existing business. CSLO6: Identify the components of the franchise agreement and know what to look for in the legal commitments between the franchisee and franchisor. CSLO7: Develop pro-forma income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow analysis for a new business. CSLO8: Identify the sources of funding for a small business in the start-up, growth, and maturity stages of CSLO9: development. Course Delivery Format Faculty must make available when requested, a course syllabus. Faculty may require on-line activities and assignments to include on-line tests and submission of all written and on-line communications. The extent of online activities/assignments may vary by course but will be specified on the syllabus. Standard Format This format is the traditional format and may use an online format to provide access to static materials which include the syllabus, course material, contact information, and presentations. Faculty must make available when requested a copy of syllabus and any other instructor provided course materials, including their contact information. Faculty may require on-line activities and assignments to include online tests and submission of all written and on-line communications. The extent of on-line activities/assignments may vary by course but will be specified on the syllabus. FURTHER DISCUSSION OF ACTIVITIES AND EXPECTATIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS Written assignments are case or research based, and involve use of the Internet or extra reading. Each assignment is outlined in a separate document posted in elearn at the time it is assigned. Each has a specified due date. All assignments must be word-processed, appropriately referenced, and submitted via the elearn dropbox by the due date. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Approximately every other week, a selected discussion topic is assigned. Each student is required to prepare for the discussion and at various times, one or more students are called upon to make a presentation regarding the topic, be a group facilitator, and/or be part of a role playing exercise. These discussion forums focus on a particular issue pertinent to management and related to course concepts. Failure to be prepared for these topics and/or absence on the discussion day may result in a zero for that topic. Partial credit may be awarded if advance notice of a missed discussion is provided and the instructor gives approval.

6 Special assignments and exercises are made available throughout the semester. These may be special Internet assignments, speakers, discussions, pop quizzes, and/or presentations. Specific directions and due dates are posted on elearn as they are assigned. These, along with regular attendance, account for the Participation/Special Events grade. Attendance and participation are critical to business success. Students are expected to be in class, on time, and prepared for class discussions. As noted above, participation in general class discussions, special assignments and exercises, and attendance will all be considered in the Participation/Special Events grade. If for any reason a student cannot attend class, the student should notify the instructor in advance in person, via phone or via elearn . Students are responsible for checking elearn and/or contacting the instructor for information on material, assignments, changes to course outline, and other items covered during a missed class. X. College Polices This class is governed by the policies and procedures stated in the current Chattanooga State Student Handbook. Additional or more specific guidelines may apply. ADA Statement Students who have educational, psychological, and/or physical disabilities may be eligible for accommodations that provide equal access to educational programs and activities at Chattanooga State. These students should notify the instructor immediately, and should contact Disabilities Support Services within the first two weeks of the semester in order to discuss individual needs. The student must provide documentation of the disability so that reasonable accommodations can be requested in a timely manner. All students are expected to fulfill essential course requirements in order to receive a passing grade in a class, with or without reasonable accommodations. Disruptive Students The term classroom disruption means student behavior that a reasonable person would view as substantially or repeatedly interfering with the activities of a class. A student who persists in disrupting a class will be directed by the faculty member to leave the classroom for the remainder of the class period. The student will be told the reason(s) for such action and given an opportunity to discuss the matter with the faculty member as soon as practical. The faculty member will promptly consult with the division dean and the college judicial officer. If a disruption is serious, and other reasonable measures have failed, the class may be adjourned, and the campus police summoned. Unauthorized use of any electronic device constitutes a disturbance. Also, if a student is concerned about the conduct of another student, he or she should please see the teacher, department head, or division dean. Affirmative Action Students who feel that he or she has not received equal access to educational programming should contact the college affirmative action officer. Academic Integrity/Academic Honesty In their academic activities, students are expected to maintain high standards of honesty and integrity. Academic dishonesty is prohibited. Such conduct includes, but is not limited to, an attempt by one or more students to use unauthorized information in the taking of an exam, to submit as one's own work, themes, reports, drawings, laboratory notes, computer programs, or other products prepared by another person, or to knowingly assist another student in obtaining or using unauthorized materials. Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. Students guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly through participation or assistance, are immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. In addition to other possible disciplinary sanctions, which may be imposed through the regular institutional procedures as a result of academic misconduct, the instructor has the authority to assign an "F" or zero for an activity or to assign an "F" for the course. The instructor reserves the right to modify this syllabus in writing during the course of the semester. XI. 7 Attendance and participation are critical in mastering the material of the course. You are expected to be in class and on time. Expectations extend to having read the text and any additional materials ahead of time. Being prepared for class makes for a better learning experience. You are responsible for contacting the instructor for information on material, assignments, changes to course outline, and other items covered during a missed class. The contact can be in person, via home, or via the elearn supplemental website, but must be in advance or as soon as possible following the class if advance notice is impossible. Computer Requirements This class requires the use of the internet and Microsoft Word software. The college has made available computer labs at several locations on campus along with a lab in the library. Most documents submitted outside of class will require students to submit documents in a typed format. The instructor is available to answer any questions you have regarding these requirements. XII.
