3 RADICATI MARKET QUADRANTS EXPLAINED Radicati Market Quadrants are designed to illustrate how individual vendors fit within specific technology markets at any given point in time. All Radicati Market Quadrants are composed of four sections, as shown in the example quadrant (Figure 1). 1. Specialists This group is made up of two types of companies: a. Emerging players that are still very new to the industry and have not yet built up much of an installed base. These companies are still developing their strategy and technology. b. Established vendors that offer a niche product. 2. Trail Blazers These vendors offer cutting edge technology, but have not yet built up a large customer base. With effective marketing and better awareness, these companies hold the power to dethrone the current market leaders. Trail blazers often shape the future of technology with their innovations and new product designs. 3. Top Players These are the current leaders of the market, with products that have built up large customer bases. Vendors do not become top players overnight. Most of the companies in this quadrant were first specialists or trail blazers (some were both). As companies reach this stage, they must fight complacency and continue product innovation, or else they will be replaced by the next generation of trail blazers. 4. Mature Player These vendors have large, mature installed bases of customers, but no longer set the pace for the rest of the industry. These vendors are no longer considered movers and shakers as they once were. a. In some cases, this is by design. 4 b. In other cases, a vendor may simply become complacent as a top vendor and be out-developed by hungrier trail blazers and other top players. c. Companies in this stage either find new life and revive their R&D, moving back into the top players segment, or else they slowly fade away as legacy technology. Figure 1, below, shows a sample Radicati Market Quadrant. As a vendor continues to develop its product, it will move horizontally along the x axis. As market share changes, vendors move vertically along the y axis. It is common for vendors to move between quadrants over the life of a product, as their products improve and market requirements evolve. 5 MARKET SEGMENTATION This edition of Radicati Market Quadrants covers the Cloud Business market, which is defined as follows: Cloud Business Providers offer cloud-based and collaboration services that provide feature-rich, enterprise-grade services for organizations of all sizes. These services are typically hosted on a multi-tenant server located in the provider s data centers. Some providers also offer a dedicated cloud service, which allows for a much more customizable and secure cloud environment. Some of the leading Cloud Business providers include: Apptix, AppRiver, GoDaddy, Google, Intermedia, Microsoft, NaviSite, Rackspace, SherWeb, and SilverSky. Cloud Business services may be based on different technology platforms, including basic POP/IMAP, Hosted Microsoft Exchange, or other proprietary technology. Many providers offer customers a range of services based on different platforms, e.g. Hosted Exchange, POP3, Microsoft Office 365, and allow customers to mix-and-match mailboxes based on different technologies to achieve the best cost to value ratio. Most Cloud Business Providers provide a great deal more than just and collaboration, and will typically include extra storage, Instant Messaging, Unified Communications, Social Networking, File Sync and Share, Hosted PBX, Security, Archiving, DLP and other services to augment their offerings. Cloud-based and collaboration services are seeing strong uptake across organizations of all sizes and this is expected to continue over the next four years. Multi-tenancy is currently the most common form of Cloud Business deployments. However, Dedicated deployments are also showing strong growth particularly as more mid-market and large organizations migrate to the cloud and look for greater customization through the deployment of a dedicated solution. 7 EVALUATION CRITERIA Cloud Business providers are positioned in the quadrant, according to two criteria: Market Share and Functionality. Market Share is based on the installed base published in our Cloud Business Market, report. The provider with the largest installed base has a market share of 1, the one with the second largest installed base has a market share of 2, etc. In order for a Cloud Business provider to be positioned in the Top Player or Mature quadrants, they need to have an active installed base of over 1 million seats. Cloud Business providers with smaller installed bases are positioned either in the Trail Blazer, or Specialist quadrants. Functionality we assess each Cloud Business providers services based on a number of key service differentiators. In order for a Cloud Business provider to be on the right side of the quadrant (Top Player or Trail Blazer), its services should have the following capabilities: Cloud platforms range from basic POP mailboxes, to enterprise-grade services such as Google Gmail (as part of Google Apps) and Microsoft Exchange Server. Many Cloud Business providers offer both Hosted Microsoft Exchange and a proprietary POP service, which can be combined for a more cost-effective cloud service. Cloud Business providers with multiple platforms have an advantage over those that offer one platform exclusively, as they provide organizations with a choice as to which service best fits their needs. Mailbox size should accommodate an organizations growing number of mailboxes, as well as allow for large attachments that may take up several gigabytes. Cloud Business providers typically offer various plans with different mailbox sizes, ranging anywhere from one or two gigabytes to unlimited. Centralized Management Consoles should allow customers to manage different services (e.g. POP and Hosted Microsoft Exchange), as well as any Copyright September 2014 The Radicati Group, Inc. 8 additional cloud services they provide (e.g. hosted PBX functionality), from a single interface. Migration support ranges from migration tools to dedicated migration teams that guide organizations through each step of the process, allowing for a much smoother migration from on-premise or another hosting provider. Customer support is a differentiating factor for Cloud Business providers. Most providers offer a support team that is customers can reach via telephone or 24x7. Some Cloud Business providers offer a dedicated customer support specialist to customers during the first few months of service to ensure that their cloud service is running smoothly, and to assist with any problems that may arise. In addition, Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are standard among Cloud Business providers, and should come with a minimum 99.9% uptime guarantee. Active Directory (AD) synchronization allows the cloud service s directories to be managed centrally through the customer s existing local AD. This enables simplified management of users and groups, and extends single sign-on capabilities to users. Security features include anti-spam and antivirus protection for each mailbox. Many providers leverage multiple technologies from third-party vendors, allowing for multi-layered security. Some providers also offer more advanced security features, such as Mobile Device Management (MDM), encryption, data loss prevention (DLP), and more. Mobility features should provide an optimized experience for mobile devices, as well as offer over-the-air (OTA) synchronization to mobile devices via different protocols, most notably Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) or BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES). Cloud storage has become increasingly more common over the past year, and allows users to synchronize documents, pictures, and other files to the cloud. 9 Cloud Document Management and Editing features should work in conjunction with cloud storage services to allow for real-time editing and collaboration on files that have been synchronized in the cloud. In some cases, multiple users can edit a document simultaneously. Cloud Productivity Tools offer customers a cloud productivity suite, allowing for a web-based experience that more closely resembles the desktop. These productivity suites, most notably Google Docs and Microsoft Office Web Apps, allow users to access documents in the cloud from a web-based application, and provide much of the same functionality that users receive on the application s desktop counterpart. These cloud-based productivity suites should also integrate with a cloud storage service to provide users with robust editing and collaboration functionality in the cloud. Add-On services include instant messaging (IM), hosted PBX, hosted archiving, unified communications (UC) and other related features, and are commonly deployed by customers alongside their base cloud packages. These services offer additional functionality, and typically integrate seamlessly with the cloud service. Less common features, such as IP acceleration technology, can sometimes also serve as a differentiator. Flexible deployment options allow businesses to choose between a multi-tenant or dedicated deployment. While multi-tenant remains the most common deployment option for Cloud Business , dedicated deployments are becoming much more common as larger organizations, which typically require more customization options, move their infrastructures to the cloud. Strong track record such as actual uptime, timely software upgrades, and more, of Cloud Business providers, should also be researched by potential customers. Note: On occasion, we may put a player on the right side of the quadrant by giving them a higher than typical Functionality Score, even if they are missing one or two of the features mentioned above, if we feel that the other aspects of their services are particularly unique and innovative. 11 KEY MARKET QUADRANT TRENDS Google, Microsoft, SilverSky, and Intermedia rank as Top Players in the Cloud Business market. o Google provides one of the most complete and feature-rich cloud messaging and collaboration solutions available today for businesses of all sizes. o Microsoft Office 365 offers a feature rich messaging and collaboration solution available in a wide range of plans at different price points that can accommodate the needs of organizations of all sizes. o SilverSky provides customers with a wide range of enterprise-grade cloud services that leverage its expertise in secure services to offer robust built-in security features. o Intermedia s Office in the Cloud, which delivers Hosted Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Lync services, along with proprietary and third partner services has been built for flexibility and ease-of-use. Apptix and AppRiver rank as Trail Blazers. o Apptix offers both multi-tenant and dedicated Hosted Microsoft Exchange to customers, as well as a wide range of additional services that allow organizations to create a customized cloud experience based on their individual needs. o AppRiver s Secure Hosted Exchange, as well as its additional services, offer a solid cloud experience with built-in, robust security features that most organizations require. Google has also found success with its mobile operating system technologies and cloudbased applications. Google Apps is a cloud-based suite that includes services for , collaboration, and productivity. Google Apps services are entirely Web-based, do not require any additional desktop software other than a Web browser, and are advertisement-free. Google Apps for Work is available in two editions: a $5 per user/month plan, or a $10 per user/month plan that includes unlimited storage and Google Apps Vault. Google Apps for Work includes the following features: Gmail is nearly identical to the free version of the webmail service offered to consumers. Gmail provides users with 30GB of storage, as well as fully integrated instant messaging (IM), voice and multi-way video chat, and phone calling. Gmail also supports over-the-air (OTA) synchronization of , contacts, and calendars with Android, Apple ios, BlackBerry, and other mobile devices. Google Calendar is a web-based calendaring service that enables shared calendars and meeting scheduling. Google Drive is a cloud-based storage and synchronization service that provides users with 30GB of storage with the $5 edition and unlimited storage with the $10 edition of Google Apps for Work. Google Drive includes native clients for Apple Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, Apple ios, and Google Android. A Linux client is currently in development. Google Drive allows users to synchronize a broad range of file types into the cloud, including HD video, Adobe Photoshop files, and more, and access these files directly from their browser or compatible device (file sizes up to 5TB). Google Drive also includes integration with Google Docs, as well as third-party web apps such as DocuSign, Balsamiq, or Aviary, which let users create and edit many of these file types from their browser without installing local software. It provides advanced search features that enable users to search for keywords in scanned documents and images in photos. Google Drive includes a revision history that retains old versions of every file for 30 days. Google Drive for Work, launched in June 2014, includes advanced management and audit capabilities, Google Apps Vault and unlimited storage for $10 per user/month. 14 optimization of user-created sites for mobile browsers. Other Google Services are also available to Google Apps users, such as Google Analytics, Blogger, AdWords, and more. Business Support and Reliability is guaranteed with a 99.9% uptime SLA (Note: this does not include allowances for scheduled downtime) and 24/7 phone support. Google Groups for Business is a service that allows users to create groups for sharing documents, calendars, sites and videos. Applications Programming Interfaces (APIs) allow organizations to integrate Google Apps into their existing infrastructure. Google Apps Vault offers optional , chat and file archiving and ediscovery services. Google Apps Vault is included in the $10 edition of Google Apps for Work. In addition, Google Apps for Business includes synchronization with Microsoft Outlook. Google Apps also includes mobile device management (MDM) to secure devices that employees bring to work. Google Apps for Government offers similar functionality as Google Apps for Work, but includes enhanced security features that are designed to meet the unique security requirements of local, state, and federal government agencies in the United States. All of the Google Apps for Government data centers are located within the United States. In addition, Google Apps for Government has received Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) certification and accreditation from the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). Google Apps for Education is a free version of Google Apps that is offered to accredited K-12 schools, colleges, and universities. Google Apps Marketplace has over a thousand applications for Accounting & Finance, Customer Management, Document Management, Productivity, Project Management, Sales & Market, Security & Compliance, Enterprise Search, Workflow, and more. FUNCTIONALITY: 9 MARKET SHARE: 1 KEY STRENGTHS: Google was built from the ground up as an entirely cloud-based service, allowing organizations to avoid the administration and maintenance costs of other cloudbased messaging platforms, which typically include desktop components. Google is one of the most recognized names in the world, which provides reassurance to businesses that they are investing in a reputable company s services. Google Apps provides users with a consistent experience, regardless of different operating systems or Internet browsers that they may use, eliminating compatibility issues and learning curves. Gmail search provides Gmail users with the same search technology as Google s world-renowned search engine. Gmail and Google Apps have consumer-oriented visual styles, to deliver an enterprise-grade service to users that more closely resembles the consumer style that they have grown accustomed to in their personal lives. Gmail includes both threaded and conversation views of messages for a greater degree of customization. 16 Google Apps Marketplace allows organizations to integrate an ever-growing number of web applications with Google Apps that extend its functionality, which include applications for Accounting & Finance, Customer Management, Document Management, Project Management, Sales & Market, Security & Compliance, Enterprise Search, Workflow, and more. Google Drive synchronizes any file type from both Microsoft Windows and Macintosh OS X computers to the cloud and makes them available across Apple iphone, ipad, Android phones and tablets, and any device with a web browser. File viewing for over 40 file types, such as HD video or Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop files allows users to handle these files without installing additional software. Google Docs offers real-time, character-by-character, multi-user simultaneous editing. Users are never locked out of sections of a shared document, spreadsheet or presentation when another user is editing. Google has fully integrated Quickoffice technology into Google Drive so that users can view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files directly on their phone or from the web without needing additional software or having to convert to a Google format. Google Sites offers an easy-to-use visual editor that does not require any specialized coding or markup language skills. Project sites can be kept private within the company or can include external partners or customers as appropriate. Google Apps offers real-time multi-way video meetings that support up to 15 participants and work across desktop, tablet and mobile. Integration with Google Drive lets users add documents to the virtual meeting room and edit them in realtime during the video call. 17 WEAKNESSES: Gmail and Google Apps consumer-oriented interfaces may drive away traditional Enterprise customers who are used to a more business-oriented visual style. The Google Apps Sync for Microsoft Outlook is limited only to the synchronization of Google Apps s, calendars and contacts, as well as free/busy and global address look up. It does not support synchronization with Microsoft Outlook folders, tasks, journal entries, and distribution lists. Google Apps is only available as a multi-tenant hosted service. Google does not offer dedicated (i.e. private cloud) versions of Google Apps. Google Apps resides entirely on Google s servers. Despite Google rarely seeing downtime, this leaves organizations with little to no control over any downtime that may occur. While Google Apps packages are less expensive than most of its competitors, customers cannot strip out functionality as a way of lowering costs further. Customer organizations are given access to all services and can decide to use all services, or any combination of services, as best suits their needs. MICROSOFT 1 Microsoft Way Redmond, WA Founded in 1975, Microsoft is the world s largest producer of software products and services for businesses. Microsoft s Office Division is responsible for Microsoft Office 365, its cloud-based productivity suite. 18 Microsoft Lync Online, Skype integration, Yammer and more. Microsoft makes constant updates to all Office 365 services and has completed upgrading all customers to the latest version of the platform. Newer features added to Microsoft Office 365 are the inclusion of OneDrive for Business (formerly SkyDrive Pro), as well as a new ediscovery Center to analyze archived data from Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, and Lync, in order to remain fully compliant. In addition, Microsoft has successfully integrated its Skype and Yammer services into the Microsoft Office 365 experience. Microsoft Office 365 includes the following services: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus is a subscription-based service of desktop productivity solutions, which includes Microsoft Word for word processing, Microsoft Excel for spreadsheets, Microsoft PowerPoint for presentations, Microsoft OneNote for note taking, Microsoft Outlook for and collaboration, Microsoft Lync for instant messaging, Microsoft Access for database management, as well as many other productivity applications. Microsoft Office 365 subscribers also gain access to OneDrive for Business, which allows users to upload and synchronize files in the cloud and access them from a browser or a desktop application for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Microsoft Office Online (formerly called Web Apps) provides a web-based experience for Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft OneNote. Users are able to create and edit Microsoft Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and more, all from a web browser. In addition, Microsoft Office Online applications are also able to access documents stored in OneDrive for Business. Microsoft Exchange Online is the cloud-based version of Microsoft Exchange Server It supports unified messaging (UM), new applications in the Outlook Web App (OWA), as well as many of the new features introduced in Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, such as the Exchange Administration Center, built-in DLP features, and more. Users can access their mailboxes via the Outlook desktop client, or through the web-based Outlook Web App (OWA). Microsoft Exchange Online supports the Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) protocol, allowing access to the service from Apple ios, Google Android, and Windows Mobile devices. 19 BlackBerry users, Microsoft offers a free, hosted BlackBerry service called BlackBerry Business Cloud services. Microsoft SharePoint Online is based Microsoft SharePoint Server 2013, and allows users to create wikis, blogs, team sites, document libraries, calendars, and more. In addition, the service synchronizes with Site Mailboxes, a new data repository introduced in Microsoft Exchange Server 2013, allowing users to maintain a single data store for files and s from both Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint. Microsoft Lync Online is based on Microsoft Lync 2013 server technology, it is a unified communications (UC) platform that provides instant messaging (IM), video calls, and online meetings. Skype federates with Microsoft Lync, allowing for instant messaging, audio calls, and presence sharing between Skype and Lync users. Yammer Enterprise is integrated across the Microsoft Office 365 solution suite. Yammer is an Enterprise social networking platform that allows users to collaborate and communicate more effectively through features such as file sharing, activity streams, and much more. 22 Microsoft Office 365 has expanded its packages to include separate offerings for small business, midsize business, and Enterprise customers to accommodate organizations of all sizes. Microsoft announced plans to release incremental upgrades for Microsoft Office 365 on a regular, monthly basis, whereas before, the service received a single, major update every one or two years. WEAKNESSES: Migration to Microsoft Office 365, as well as upgrades from one version to another, still require too much customer IT involvement for what should be a cloud-based service as too many desktop components are invariably affected and need to be verified or manually upgraded. Microsoft has been in constant upgrade mode in an effort to release new features, which puts a strain on customer IT organizations as each upgrade still involves too much extra work on the customer side. The administrative interface to Microsoft Office 365 is confusing and poorly designed. While Microsoft continually tries to improve on it, it still falls far short of what customers would expect from a cloud-based service. Microsoft customer support tends to be inconsistent and not always fully up to speed with the vendor s latest features and functionality. While Microsoft has made much of its Skype and Yammer integration, both are still lagging in too many aspects of their integration as to be truly useful. Microsoft s much touted common Microsoft Office 365 experience across Windows 8 workstations and phones is still lagging far behind as access to functionality from Windows 8 mobile devices tends to be spotty and inconsistent. The Rackspace Control Panel provides IT administrators with centralized management of all of these services, including spam filtering, archiving, domain management, apps management, and other functions. Rackspace offers two cloud-based services: Rackspace and Hosted Microsoft Exchange. Rackspace also provides a hybrid option to customers, which mixes the two services on the same domain to help organizations lower total acquisition costs. Rackspace leverages spam filtering and anti-virus technologies from Cloudmark, ARM Research Labs, and ClamAV to provide each mailbox with multi-layered spam and malware protection. 53 o Rackspace is a proprietary POP/IMAP-based , contact, and calendaring service that provides each mailbox with 25 GB of storage. Rackspace allows attachments of up to 50 MB. For accessibility, customers can access their inbox on the desktop via POP/IMAP compatible client or via the Rackspace webmail client. For mobile device access, Rackspace offers an optional Mobile Sync service as a $1 upgrade, which is based on Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync technology. 55 Rackspace Cloud Drive allows organizations to collaborate on files stored in the cloud. In addition, this service enables users to edit a single file simultaneously. Rackspace Cloud Drive is available via a web-based interface to enable productivity from any time and at any location. WEAKNESSES: Rackspace s collaboration features, such as contacts, calendars, and tasks, are available only in the webmail client. Users accessing Rackspace via a desktop client are only able to view and manage mail. Customers must upgrade to Hosted Microsoft Exchange in order to attain these collaboration features on a desktop client. Rackspace does not currently have a cloud-based Microsoft Lync offering, a service that many of its competitors offer. This may disappoint organizations looking for a secure IM and presence service to complement their messaging and collaboration services. Rackspace requires customers to pay an additional fee per user for Mobile Sync, a feature that many of its competitors include for free. Despite Rackspace s multi-layered anti-malware approach, its security offerings do not currently include encryption capabilities.
