4 - The 2015 Science Business Conference Featured guests Tibor Navracsics European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics is the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport for the Commission of President Juncker ( ). Before this mandate, he started his career as a university professor and was subsequently appointed head of the Prime Minister s Office, member of the Hungarian Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Administration and Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He is responsible for improving the quality and efficiency of the EU education systems, notably through the European Semester and ET Navracsics is also in charge of the education dimension of the Europe 2020 Strategy, the implementation of Erasmus +, the EU s Youth, Sports and Culture policies. Muriel Attané Secretary General, EARTO Before joining EARTO, Muriel Attané was Secretary General of EARPA, the European association of automotive research organisations for seven years. In parallel, she worked as EU affairs manager for more than 10 years for TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research), the largest Dutch RTO. There, she gained extensive hands-on experience on EU research & innovation policies & funding programmes. Sergio Bertolucci Director for Research and Computing, CERN A former Pisa scholar, Sergio Bertolucci has worked at DESY, Fermilab and Frascati. He was a member of the group that founded Fermilab s CDF experiment and has been involved in the design, construction and running of the CDF detector. Bertolucci has been technical coordinator of the team responsible for the design and construction of the KLOE detector at the DAFNE storage ring at the Frascati National Laboratories (LNF). He was appointed head of the LNF accelerator division and the DAFNE project, becoming director in Before taking over the Directorate for Research at CERN, Bertolucci was already chairing the LHC committee and was a member of DESY s physics research committee. Wolfgang Burtscher Deputy Director-General, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission Wolfgang Burtscher is deputy director-general of the European Commission s Directorate General for Research and Innovation, responsible for the policy and management of the Research Framework Programme. In this capacity, he was involved in the design and elaboration of, the new Framework Programme for research and innovation, and is now closely associated to its implementation. An Austrian national, Mr Burtscher holds a doctorate in law and also has a qualification from the Institut Européen des Hautes Etudes Internationales in Nice. 4

He developed the Technology Strategy Board s investment case and led the 34.5 million Future Cities Demonstrator programme. Previously Cain cofounded and chaired Global Entrepreneurship Week and was CEO at Enterprise UK. Scott is also the founding partner of The Long Run Venture. Quentin Compton-Bishop CEO, Warwick Ventures Ltd Quentin Compton-Bishop has over 17 years international business development experience within early-stage technology companies, including 11 years as CEO before joining Warwick Ventures in In recent years, Quentin has worked in the renewable energy sector, setting up the National Energy Foundation s Communities Fund for early-stage communityowned sustainable energy projects. Previously, he was CEO of two materials technology companies, P2i and RolaTube Technology (now RTL Materials). He has also spent a number of years in California working with start-up software businesses. During this period he has raised over 5 million in seed and early-stage investment funding. Denis Crowley Head of Unit (incoming), Innovation in education, EIT and MSCA, DG Education and Culture, European Commission Denis Crowley holds degrees from University College Dublin and Trinity College Dublin. He has spent his entire career working in public service, first within the Irish administration where he worked in a range of different Ministries responsible for Finance, Justice and Social Policy; and since 1997 within the European Commission, where he has worked in the DGs for social affairs and education and culture. He is currently Head of Unit responsible for policy coordination in DG EAC and relations with the other EU institutions; before moving shortly to head the unit in charge of Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions, the European Institute for Innovation and Technology and polices for innovation in education. Joost Degenaar Programme Director Healthy Ageing, Hanze University of Applied Sciences Since 2010, Joost Degenaar has been the programme director for Healthy Ageing at Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen. This Centre of Expertise is a public private partnership for innovation in health and wellbeing, in which 150 partner organisations collaborate in 25 innovation labs (living labs) in the Northern part of the Netherlands. He is an active partner in the Healthy Ageing Network Northern Netherlands and involved in the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. From he was director of Education and Research of Hanze UAS. Before, he worked for 20 years in different innovation and management roles in higher health education and in higher technical education. 5

6 - The 2015 Science Business Conference Featured guests Clara de la Torre Director, Key Enabling Technologies, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission After a couple of years in the private sector, Clara de la Torre focussed on research policy where she started her activities at the European Commission in She started her current position on 1st January, She was previously the director responsible for Research and Innovation. From 2008 to 2010, she was director responsible for Inter-institutional and legal matters related to the Framework Programme, also at the European Commission. She also worked at the EU Joint Research Centre both in Brussels and Seville, where she was advisor to the director of the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies. Monica Dietl Director, COST Association Monica Dietl was appointed director of the COST Association in June Before joining COST, she was twice representative and director of the Brussels office of the French National Research Centre (CNRS). Dietl is a biologist specialised in neuroscience. Her research experience includes: the Pierre et Marie Curie University, the Neurology Department at the Lainz Hospital in Vienna, Sandoz in Basel, and the Inserm Institute of Neurosciences. Previously, she worked as a policy officer at the European Commission s Directorate General for Research, where she was in charge of drafting the FP7 Ideas Specific Programme and contributed to the setting up of the European Research Council (ERC). Mischa Dohler Head, Centre for Telecom Research; Chair Professor, King s College London Mischa Dohler is full professor in wireless communications at King s College London, head of the Centre for Telecommunications Research, co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of the smart city pioneer Worldsensing, fellow and distinguished lecturer of the IEEE, and editor-in-chief of the Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies. He has pioneered several research fields, contributed to numerous wireless broadband, IoT/ M2M and cyber security standards, and holds a dozen patents. He acts as policy, technology and entrepreneurship adviser, examples being Richard Branson s Carbon War Room, House of Lords UK, UK Ministry BIS, EPSRC ICT Strategy Advisory Team, European Commission, ISO Smart City working group, and various start-ups. He is also an entrepreneur, angel investor, passionate pianist and fluent in 6 languages. Shiva Dustdar Head of RDI Advisory, European Investment Bank In her current position, Shiva Dustdar is heading the Research, Development and Innovation Advisory Services, a partnership with the European Commission under the InnovFin Programme of. She has been at the EIB since 2003, first in its Risk Management Directorate, then in its EU Lending Directorate where she was responsible for financing of R&D projects using the Risk Sharing Finance Facility. Before joining the EIB, Shiva worked at Fitch as director of High Yield where she was responsible for developing the agency s European High Yield rating business. 6

7 Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry President of the Euro-Mediterranean University (EMUNI) Abdelhamid El-Zoheiry graduated from the Medical School at Cairo University in 1985 and was appointed at the department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery. After obtaining a Master s degree in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University, he pursued a career in medical education, establishing a Centre of Excellence for skills training for medical students and professionals, the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at Cairo University. In 2006 he was seconded to the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research where he acquired extensive experience in initiating and managing international partnerships and projects in Education, Research and Innovation, particularly along the Euro-Mediterranean and EU-Africa Partnerships. Maryline Fiaschi Director, Science Business Featured guests As director at Science Business, Maryline Fiaschi is responsible for managing the Science Business Network of leading research universities, the ACES - Academic Enterprise Award - and EU-funded projects. She entered the media business in 2007 in Shanghai, where she worked as Business Development & Commercial Director at Shanghai Daily, the leading English-language newspaper in China. She started working in the EU media sphere managing public affairs corporate accounts at EurActiv in Brussels from 2009 to She worked for DG Education & Culture, European Commission from 2001 to Today she is an external evaluator for EC s university-industry cooperation programmes. She holds degrees from Université La Sorbonne, Università di Bologna and Université catholique de Louvain. Matthew W. Ganz President, Boeing Germany and Northern Europe; Vice-President, European Technology Strategy, The Boeing Company Matt Ganz is responsible for developing and implementing Boeing strategy in Germany and Northern Europe, which focuses on new business, industrial and technology partnership opportunities, corporate citizenship projects and expanding the company s presence. Previously, Ganz was vice-president and general manager of Boeing Research & Technology, the advanced central research and development unit of The Boeing Company. Kostas Glinos Head of Unit, Strategy, EFTA and enlargement countries, Russia Asia and Pacific, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission Kostas Glinos has been with the European Commission since He leads the Strategy, EFTA and enlargement countries, Russia, Asia and Pacific unit within the directorate in charge of International Cooperation of the Directorate General for Research and Innovation. Before that he was in charge of the e-infrastructures unit of the Directorate General for Information Society and Media from January 2009 to December Before joining the Commission Glinos worked with multinational companies and research institutes in the U.S., Greece and Belgium. He holds a diploma in chemical engineering from the University of Thessaloniki, a PhD from the University of Massachusetts and a MBA in investment management from Drexel University. 7

8 - The 2015 Science Business Conference Chris Haenen Director, EU Funding, GE Featured guests Chris Haenen has almost 20 years of experience in the field of project financing, especially governmental grants and (tax) incentives. He worked for 15 years at Big 4 companies and assisted multinational corporations, small and medium enterprises, not for profit and (governmental) bodies. At GE, Chris is part of GE Governmental Affairs in Brussels and helps GE to access EU funded collaborative research in Europe. For that purpose, he works closely with the Global Research Center in Munich and the R&D departments with the business and supports them with lean processes, tools and best practices. Bart Haex Professor of Biomechanics, KU Leuven; Director of Research Policy, Maastricht University With a background in both science and business, Bart Haex is shaping strategic EU-wide partnerships between centers of excellence. With a PhD in the field of biomedical engineering, he started a spin-off company (designing individualized biomedical and ergonomical products) and has been advising the Flemish Minister of Economy, Science and Innovation. He was appointed managing director of EIT Health (née InnoLIFE) until winning the Healthy Living and Active Ageing bid of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). He is currently a professor of Biomechanics at KU Leuven (specializing in sleep research) and Director of Research Policy at Maastricht University (specializing in the valorization of research). Richard L. Hudson CEO & Editor, Science Business Richard L. Hudson has been a leading science and technology journalist in Europe for more than 30 years. As managing editor of The Wall Street Journal Europe from 1997 to 2003, he helped lead a redesign of the title in He co-founded Science Business in He is also co-author of book with Yale/IBM fractal mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot: The (mis)behavior of Markets: A fractal view of risk, ruin & reward : Basic Books He is a graduate of Harvard, and a former Knight Fellow at MIT. Paul Indelicato Vice President for Research and Innovation, Pierre and Marie Curie University Paul Indelicato was the director of the Kastler Brossel Laboratory from 2006 to He has served on the UPMC Scientific Council and on the Research Directorate as coordinator of the Energy, Matter and the Universe division. A CNRS researcher since 1983, he worked at the Laboratory of Atomic and Nuclear Physics which included a leave of absence during which he was a research associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (Gaithersburg, Maryland) and at the University of Virginia. On an international level, he is currently a member of the Scientific Council of the Extreme Matter Institute and the International Advisory Board of the Institute Stefan Meyer of the Academy of Sciences in Vienna. 8

9 Featured guests Ann Katherine Isaacs Rector s Delegate for European Programmes: Research and Higher Education, University of Pisa Ann Katherine Isaacs is the Rector s delegate for European programmes at the University of Pisa, and member of the working group on higher education and research of the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research. She has designed and coordinates a large-scale Tempus project to build a Central Asian Higher Education Area aligned with the European Higher Education Area, as well as a new project on Public Health in Uzbekistan. She is Erasmus+ Ambassador for Italy. She has been active in the SSH Expert Advisory Group for the Seventh Framework and as an evaluator, on numerous occasions, for DG Research and DG EAC. Éanna Kelly News Editor, Science Business Éanna is responsible for writing news features and research reports at Science Business. He was previously a policy analyst with a Brussels-based communication agency specialising in R&D research and policy (ISC Intelligence in Science) and a research assistant with the RAND Corporation (Brussels office). Kelly has a degree in economics and law from Dublin City University and an MSc in political science from Trinity College Dublin. Sudhesh Kumar Dean, Warwick Medical School; Director of Institute of Digital Healthcare, Warwick Manufacturing Group Sudhesh Kumar is dean of the Warwick Medical School and director of Institute of Digital Healthcare, WMG. He is also a consultant physician at University Hospital Coventry. His research interest is obesity and its complications, particularly type 2 diabetes. His interests include developing novel approaches to managing obesity and diabetes which will ultimately transform and improve patient care and treatment. He runs research teams on human adipose tissue biology, human energy metabolism and pragmatic clinical studies including trials of new treatments. He has published over 220 papers and 5 books on these subjects. Waldemar Kütt Head of Unit, Bio-based products and processing, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission Since November 2014, Waldemar Kütt is head of unit for bio-based products and processing in DG Research and Innovation. From he worked in the Cabinet of Research Commissioners Potocnik and Geoghegan-Quinn, where he was responsible for the 80billion programme. He has coordinated activities and policies related to innovation, SME, IPR, finance, technology transfer, bioregions and European Technology Platforms as part of the EU Life Sciences and Biotechnology Strategy. He took part in the development of a strategy for a European knowledge-based bio-economy (KBBE), which was the basis of the FP7 thematic programme for Food, agriculture, fishery and biotechnology, as well as in the related lead market initiative on bio-based products. 9

10 - The 2015 Science Business Conference Featured guests Jean-David Malo Head of Unit, SMEs, Financial instruments and State Aid, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission Jean-David Malo started his career as head of internal control management in the Comité Professionnel de la Distribution de Carburants in France. He joined the European Commission in January From 2011 to 2013 he was managing a newly created unit in DG Research and Innovation, the main objective of which was to contribute to increase private finance and close market gaps in investing in research and innovation, notably in the context of. Since 2014, this unit is now also covering the SMEs dimension of Horizon 2020, including in particular EUROSTARS II and the design and coordination of the SME Instrument and the Fast Track to Innovation pilot. Karin Markides President and CEO, Chalmers University of Technology Karin Markides became president and CEO of Chalmers in August 2006, following a career as a professor of analytical chemistry. She was deputy director general at Vinnova, a state agency financing research and innovation for sustainable development, from 2004 to Markides was also a board member of the Swedish Research Council Committee for Research Infrastructure, and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, as well as several tech start-up companies in the US. Since 2009 Karin Markides holds the chair of CESAER The Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research a non-profit-making international association of the leading European Universities of Technology, Engineering Colleges and Schools, cooperating on policy issues. Ross Melzer Director, Science Business Before joining Science Business, Ross worked in Brussels at EU affairs media EurActiv for 6 years and The Wall Street Journal Europe for 7 years. He s also had senior management roles at the Financial Times in London and Paris and Time Magazine in Germany. He has more than 25 years experience in the world of international media. He is a graduate of Coventry university and has an MBA from CASS Business School. Marzio Nessi Head of the Development and Innovation Unit (DG-DI), CERN Marzio Nessi is head of the Development and Innovation Unit (DG-DI) at CERN and the leader of the new CERN Neutrino Project. He is active in various R&D initiatives with a combined scientific and societal impact. He has directed the ATLAS detector construction at the LHC until recently, that proved the Higgs Boson exists. A discovery that has rewarded its theorists with the 2013 Nobel Price. He holds a PhD in particle physics from ETH Zurich, he is member of the CERN senior staff, professor of physics at the Geneva University and the JINST journal director. 10

11 Featured guests Peter Olesen Chairman of the EIT Governing Board Peter Olesen obtained his PhD in Plant Cell Biology at University of Copenhagen in He has been Chair of the Board of the Danish Council for Strategic Research since 2008 and spent 25 years as Research Director, VP R&D and Executive VP/CSO in four leading international food and food ingredients companies. In 2012, he was appointed to the Governing Board of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), which he will become Chairman of on 1 August Viorel Peca Head of Unit, Innovation, DG Communications Networks, Content & Technology, European Commission Viorel Peca unit s mission is to develop and inspire a new vision on ICT innovation and entrepreneurship. This addresses, in particular, entrepreneurship and innovation support actions and policies, access to finance, inducement prizes, innovation procurement, ICT innovation vouchers and coordination of standardisation activities (including the ICT multistakeholder platform). Peca joined the European Commission in 2008 and DG CONNECT in 2011 as head of unit for Networked Media; previously he was project manager and chief business analyst for the efp7 team of DG DIGIT. He started his career in R&D at Alcatel Romania in 1996, and then moved to Belgium in 2000 where he worked for several Alcatel products spanning the network. Roy Pennings Managing Consultant, PNO Consultants Roy Pennings is a managing consultant whose typical clients include CERN, European universities, research organisations, and large companies in the energy and health sector. Additionally, he is an elected member of the regional parliament of Limburg, the Southernmost province of the Netherlands, since 2007, where his focus areas are economic affairs and finance. Pennings is a graduate of Leiden University and the University of South Carolina- Columbia. Abdul Rahim Director, Vision2020: The Horizon Network Abdul Rahim is an expert in public funding and has secured several millions for organisations and institutions. He has run several European funded projects to help smaller businesses secure contracts from the public sector and is a regular speaker at events. Rahim has significant links with UK and European Universities and focuses on connecting business to research institutions. He was Vice Chairman and Chair of its Finance and Human Resources Committee. Rahim is currently an Advisory Board Member, Faculty of Business and Management at Regent s University. 11

12 - The 2015 Science Business Conference Featured guests Donatella Sciuto Vice Rector, Politecnico di Milano Donatella Sciuto is a member of the Consiglio Superiore (Board of Governors) of the Bank of Italy. She received her degree in electronic engineering from the Politecnico di Milano, her PhD in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder and an MBA from SDA Bocconi University. Her main research interests cover the methodologies for the design of embedded systems and multicore systems, from the specification level down to the implementation of both the hardware and software components, including reconfigurable and adaptive systems. She has published over 250 research papers. Daria Tataj Founder and CEO, Tataj Innovation Daria Tataj is Founder and CEO of Tataj Innovation, a consultancy helping companies and governments design innovation policy. Alumna of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council, she is WEF s expert on innovation. Former Member of the EIT founding Board (European Institute of Innovation and Technology) and its Executive Committee, she has overseen multiple business-academia partnerships across Europe. Emma Woodford Director for Strategic Partnerships and Development, European Public Health Alliance (EPHA) Prior to joining EPHA, Emma Woodford worked at the Association of European Cancer Leagues as the Project and Policy Coordinator. In addition to coordinating the work of the cancer patient support working group, Woodford provided the Secretariat for the MEPs Against Cancer group in the European Parliament ensuring that cancer prevention and control remained constantly on the European political agenda. Among many of its health priorities, EPHA is working towards furthering the understanding of the potential impacts of free trade agreements on the health of Europeans and European governance systems relevant to health. Woodford currently holds a health seat in the DG Trade TTIP Advisory Group. John Wyles Member of the Science Business Board For more than 20 years John Wyles has been a leading communications consultant in Brussels and a newspaper columnist. He originated and developed communications strategies and projects for a wide variety of clients and for five years was the European Commission s external communications advisor on the launch of the euro.john was also a journalist for the Financial Times for almost twenty years as Brussels bureau chief, Foreign News Editor and Rome Correspondent before becoming Deputy Editor of L Indipendente of Milan. John writes a fortnightly column in the European Voice, and recently held the position of Chief Strategy Coordinator and Acting Director of Studies at the European Policy Centre, to which he has been a Senior Advisor since John is British, and alongside his native English speaks French and Italian.
