2 2 DETAILS OF QUALFICATION DELIVERY and ASSESSMENT CLIENT GROUP This qualification covers workers who work as basic level massage therapists. It provides skills in therapeutic relaxation massage including basic health assessment and treatment and may be used by people working in: a clinic or in their own clinic an aged care facility a health service a spa facility or a palliative care facility or hospital. The target client groups for this qualification are: 1. Students post- Year 12 wishing to embark on a career in body therapies 2. Mature age students wishing to make a career change into natural therapies, and who may consider body work as a launching pad into other complementary therapies 3. Workers from related disciplines wishing to add to their skill base, e.g. nurses, and aged care workers. TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT ARRANGEMENTS 1. Entry Requirements 1.1 Pre-requisites Candidates must be aged 18 or over to undertake training at the College. The College Director assesses considerations for applicants who do not meet this entry requirement on an individual basis. 1.2 Language, Literacy and Numeracy The college may require a student to undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment prior to enrolling in the course. Training in this qualification involves the acquisition of significant anatomical, physiological and pathological terminology, so appropriate language and literacy skills are required before commencement of training. Acquiring knowledge and skills in practice administration, for example, depends on appropriate underpinning numeracy skills. 1.3 Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) The college welcomes applications for recognition of prior learning, irrespective of whether this learning has been acquired by formal or informal means. An Information Package for RPL is available from college administration staff or can be downloaded from the college website. 2. Course Duration The program is delivered over a period of 9-12 months. Training commences in February each year (subject to enrolments) and is completed by December that year. Training and assessment strategies Cert IV Massage Therapy Practice v Page 2

3 3 Students may take longer to complete the qualification depending on whether they elect to study full time or part time. Students need to complete up to 60 hours of supervised practical work, so that knowledge and skills in therapeutic relaxation massage can be assessed in a variety of contexts with different client groups. These hours will be obtained through attendance at the college s supervised student clinic, located at the training rooms at the college and through supervised Community events. The timetable for supervised clinic may vary but usually runs from July to November each year. The clinic is open to members of the public, who receive discounted therapeutic relaxation massage treatments by the students, under supervision. Supervisors are community based practitioners who are industry experts and have the required qualifications. 3. Program Delivery The program is delivered in the following modes: 3.1 Classroom based delivery for theoretical and practical training This training is undertaken during weekdays or weekend intensive blocks at the College s training rooms at 300 Argyle St, North Hobart. Weekend intensives (blocks) and held in the first half of the year, roughly one month apart, and also at the College s North Hobart Training rooms. 3.2 Workbooks (Off campus) Workbooks for all units are handed out to students, or posted to them, and require submission to the college at a specified future date. These modes of delivery mean that students can enrol in the qualification and undertake the theoretical modules of their training via off-campus learning (workbook) and attend the college for weekend intensives in their practical training. This suits students who have issues around work and family commitments, or who live a significant distance from the College. Estimated Distribution of Student Workload: The estimated student workload is 600 hours for this qualification 16 x 2 hour theory 7 x 2.5 hour theory 21 x 3 hour practical and theory Body books, 21 hours Workbooks for WH&S, Infection Control and Referrals up to 90 hours clinical practice 60 hours first aid off site The above hours are guidelines only and do not apply to reading, preparation of assignments, reflection or time taken in organisation and travel etc. Training and assessment strategies Cert IV Massage Therapy Practice v Page 3

4 4 ASSESSMENT VALIDATION AND MODERATION The processes used to validate and moderate assessment in this qualification are: College trainers and assessors meet with student clinic supervisors during the period of student clinic to check that knowledge and skills being demonstrated by students in the supervised clinic are consistent. Moderation meetings are conducted annually, attended by all trainers and assessors. This is to review the delivery of training and to review assessment decisions Meetings are conducted and attended by Industry experts, Learning Program Coordinator and Management to ensure relevancy to industry requirements.
