1 Overview of admission requirements for the master s degree programs of the Faculty of Arts Subjects Studies amounting to 78 credits Studies amounting to 42 credits Egyptology and Coptic Studies General Linguistics Ancient Near Eastern Studies Achievements in Egyptology, Coptic Studies, Classical Philology, Papyrology, Classical Archaeology, Christian Archaeology, Pre- and Early History, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Cuneiform Studies, Near Eastern Archaeology, Ancient History, Medieval and Modern History, Byzantine Studies, Evangelical Theology, Catholic Theology, Jewish Studies, African Studies, Arabic Studies, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Classical Studies, Gender Studies, Art History, Comparative Literature, Linguistics, Classical Studies, Anthropology, Ethnology, European Ethnology or Religious Studies to the extent of at least 50 credits. None Achievements in General Linguistics to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements a) in Syntax with in-depth knowledge to the extent of at least 8 credits, b) in Phonetics / Phonology with basic knowledge to the extent of at least 7 credits, c) in Semantics with extensive knowledge to the extent of at least 7 credits, d) in the acquisition of basic knowledge of foreign languages (except English) to the extent of at least 8 credit points. None Achievements in Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Assyriology, Ancient Oriental Philology, Ancient Oriental Archeology or Near Eastern Archaeology to the extent of at least 45 credits, including achievements in the field of Akkadian and cuneiform script to the extent of at least 18 credits with proven wellestablished knowledge of Akkadian grammar and vocabulary and established knowledge of cuneiform writing.

2 American Studies None a) achievements in American Studies to the extent of at least 50 credits, b) achievements in English Philology to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in the field of American literary and cultural history or the theory of American literature and culture to the extent of at least 14 credits, or c) achievements in General and Comparative Literature, in the Social Sciences or in History to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in the field of research on America to the extent of at least 14 credits. Certificates of sufficient knowledge of English if not a native speaker of English. Sufficient knowledge of English must be documented through minimum achievements in an internationally recognized test: a) Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English b) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English with a minimum grade of "B" c) at least 587 points in the handwritten test of the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (paper based TOEFL) d) at least 240 points in the computer based test of the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (computer based TOEFL) e) at least 94 points in the "new internet based TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language" f) at least 94/587 points in the "TOEFL.ITP - Test of English as a Foreign Language, Institutional Testing Program", where the score depends on the respective grading scale applied for the evaluation (TOEFL.iBT resp. paper based TOEFL) g) UNIcert level 4 h) C1 certificate according to CEF (Common European Framework). Successful completion of the test may usually not be older than two years before the date of the application for admission to the master's study course. Exempt from the obligation to provide a test are applicants with at least two years of study or vocational stay in an English speaking country within the last

3 Ancient Cultures - Ancient History Arabic / Islamic Studies Christian Archaeology and Byzantine Art History three years prior to the date of application for approval. Exempt as well is anyone having completed an English-based study course or partial study course. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of English must be supplied to the Faculty of Arts at enrollment for a winter semester by September, 30 th ; the certificate is an enrollment requirement; a pending registration will not take place. a) achievements in History to the extent of at least 60 credits, including achievements in Ancient History to the extent of at least 20 credits, or b) achievements in Classical Studies / Ancient Cultures to the extent of at least 75 credits, including achievements in the field of Greek History and Roman History to the extent of at least 6 credits each, but altogether at least 20 credits. Proof of sufficient knowledge of Latin, at least at the level of Latinum. Evidence of sufficient knowledge of Latin must be provided until the end of the second semester, enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Achievements in Arabic Studies, Islamic Studies, Iranian Studies, Turkish Studies and Central Asian Studies, and the history, culture and politics of the Middle East to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in the field of the Arabic language to the extent of at least 30 credits and in the field of Islamic history, culture, religion and law to the extent of at least 15 credits. Arabic language skills (by implication of academic relevance) Achievements in Classical / Medieval Latin Philology, Ancient / Medieval History, Classical / Provincial Roman Archaeology, Pre- and Early History, Christian / Late Antiquity / Byzantine Archaeology / Art History, Coptic Studies, Byzantine Studies, Ancient Art History or Architectural History to the extent of at least 60 credits, including achievements in Christian / Late

4 German Philology English Philology Possible See studies amounting to 42 credits Antiquity / Byzantine Archaeology / Art History to the extent of at least 25 credits. Certification of sufficient knowledge of at least one of these languages: Latin or ancient Greek. The evidence is attested for Latin by the state examination Latinum and Greek by the state examination Graecum or an appropriate university examination and must be provided by the end of the second semester, enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Achievements in German Philology to the extent of at least 49 credits, including achievements in basic, advanced and expert level of at least 16 credits each in at least two of the three sub-subjects Modern German Literature, Medieval German Studies and German Linguistics None a) achievements in the sub-subjects of English, anglophone and North American Literature and Cultural Studies, English Linguistics, English Language History and Language Practice to the extent of at least 50 credits. Applicants, whose native language is not English, must have sufficient knowledge of the English language. Sufficient knowledge of English is demonstrated by minimum performance in an internationally recognized test: a) Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, b) "International English Language Testing System '(IELTS) at least level "Band 7" c) at least 587 points in the handwritten test of the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (paper based TOEFL), d) at least 587 points in the "Institutional Testing Program for English Proficiency" (TOEFL ITP), d) at least 240 points in the computer based test of the "Test of English as a Foreign Language" (computer based TOEFL),

Successful completion of the test may usually not be older than two years before the date of the application for admission to the master's study course. Exempt from the obligation to provide a test are applicants with at least one year of study or vocational stay in an English speaking country within the last two years prior to the date of application for approval. Exempt as well is anyone having completed an English-based study course or partial study course. a) achievements in Finno-Ugric or Uralic Studies to the extent of at least 60 credits, including achievements in the form of active basic skills in a second Finno-Ugric language to the extent of at least 8 credits, or b) achievements in Estonian Studies, Finnish Studies or Hungarian Studies to the extent of at least 60 credits, including achievements in Finno-Ugric or Uralic Studies to the extent of at least 24 credits and achievements in the form of active basic skills in a second Finno-Ugric language to the extent of at least 8 credits. Achievements in History to the extent of at least 51 credits, including achievements in at least two of the four eras (Ancient History, Medieval, Early Modern Period, Modern Period) to the extent of at least 6 credits each. None Gender Studies But special regulation: it is possible to write a master's thesis in the 36-credit module package If the master's thesis should be written in the field of Gender Studies, the following additional module amounting to 6 credits must be completed successfully:

6 M.GeFo.8 Gender and transformations (6 credits / 2 semester hours) The examination commission of the respective master s program where the applicant is enrolled decides on the admissibility of writing a master s thesis in the field of Gender Studies. The examination commission for Gender Studies decides on the admission. Greek Philology a) achievements in Greek Philology to the extent of at least 50 credits, including in-depth achievements in the grammar of the Greek language to the extent of at least 6 credits and achievements in Greek Literature to the extent of at least 9 credits, or b) achievements in Classical Studies to the extent of at least 54 credits, including achievements in Greek Philology to the extent of at least 42 credits. Skills in Ancient Greek to the extent of the Graecum; Latin skills to the extent of Latinum Indology Achievements in Indology or South Asian Studies to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in Sanskrit or Hindi to the extent of at least 8 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of Sanskrit or Hindi. Evidence is attested in the case of Sanskrit through successful completion of the module B.Ind.41 or equivalent certification, in the case of Hindi through successful completion of the module B.Ind.51 or equivalent certification. The certification according to the second sentence has to be presented to the Faculty of Arts at enrollment for a winter semester by September, 30 th; the certificate is an enrollment requirement; a pending registration will not take place. Intercultural German Studies / German as a Achievements in the sub-subjects of German Language, Literary and Cultural Studies, Literary and

7 Foreign Language Cultural History, Comparative Literature, Theory, Methodology and Didactics of German as a Foreign Language / German as a Second Language, applied Cultural Studies, Cultural Anthropology / Ethnology, Gender Studies or Linguistics, Literary and Cultural Studies, Methodology and Didactics of another Philology to the extent of at least 50 credits Intercultural German Studies / Germany - China Knowledge of two modern foreign languages, at least one of which has been completed at level B2 of the Common European Frame of Reference for Languages, the other on level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Not defined. Degree in German Studies or a closely related field Knowledge of the English language at the level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, if not a native speaker of English Iranian Studies Achievements in Iranian Studies to the extent of at least 50 credits, including basic knowledge of Persian and basic knowledge the Iranian cultural history. None Classical Archeology a) achievements in Classical (Ancient History, Pre- and Early History, Classical Philology, Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Late Antiquity Studies), or Cultural Studies (Ethnology, Cultural Anthropology) to the extent of at least 60 credits, including knowledge in the field of Classical Archaeology to the extent of at least 40 credits, or b) achievements in Image Analysis (Art History) or the History of

8 Comparative Literature Cultural Anthropology / European Ethnology Possible See studies amounting to 42 credits Architecture to the extent of at least 60 credits, including achievements in the field of Classical Archaeology to the extent of at least 40 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of at least one of the following languages: a) Latin at least to the extent of Latinum or b) Ancient Greek at least to the extent of Graecum. The certification according to the first sentence has to be presented by the end of the first semester; enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Achievements in General and Comparative Literature Studies or in a single Philology to the extent of at least 45 credits, including achievements in the field of Literary Studies to the extent of at least 17 credits. Documentation of the required knowledge of two modern foreign languages, one of which must be English or French, on level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or comparable language skills (e.g. completed bachelor s studies, at least five years of schooling with an average grade of at least C or an equivalent score). Exempt from the obligation to provide certification are applicants who are native speakers of the respective foreign language, as well as candidates with a minimum of six months of study or vocational stay in the respective country within the last three years prior to the date of application for approval. Certification must be provided within one semester after enrollment, enrollment is in this case pending until the missing certificates are provided by the candidate. Whether skills are appropriate will be decided on a case-by-case basis by the admission commission, which can request assessments from other institutions (e.g. ZESS) for its decision. Achievements in subjects from the Humanities and Social Sciences with a cultural approach to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in the methods of either field research or Cultural History and achievements in

9 the field of Cultural Theory, to the extent of at least 12 credits, also achievements in the area of the basics of Cultural Anthropology / European Ethnology to the extent of at least 6 credits. Students, who wish to attend the focus "Curriculum Visual Anthropology", must present the successful completion of the module B.KAEE.14 or equivalent achievements. Deferring from sentence 1, certification can be provided by the start of the second semester; admission to study "Curriculum Visual Anthropology" is pending until this condition is met. None Art History Achievements in Art History or Art Studies to the extent of at least 57 credits, including achievements from the advanced program to the extent of at least 9 credits. None Latin Philology a) achievements in Latin Philology to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements of in-depth grammar studies of Latin to the extent of at least 6 credits and achievements in the Latin literature to the extent of at least 9 credits, or b) achievements in Classical Studies to the extent of at least 54 credits, including achievements in Latin Philology to the extent of at least 42 credits. 10 Linguistic Anthropology and Ancient American Studies Medieval and Renaissance Studies Achievements of altogether at least 50 credits in History, German Philology, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages, Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, Classical Latin Philology, Medieval and Renaissance Studies or comparable interdisciplinary oriented courses attuned to the medieval or early modern period, including: a) achievements in Medieval and Renaissance Studies or comparable interdisciplinary oriented courses attuned to the medieval or early modern period to the extent of at least 40 credits, b) achievements in History to the extent of at least 40 credits, including achievements in the History of the Middle Ages or the Early Modern Period to the extent of altogether at least 20 credits, c) achievements in German Philology to the extent of Middle Ages and the Modern Era, the following additional module, amounting to 6 credits must be completed successfully: M.MNL.11 "Themes and trends of research in the field of Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era" (6 credits) If the examinee already has to complete a module accompanying the master s thesis in the master s course he or she is enrolled at, the following module takes up the place of M.MNL.11: M.MNL.10 "Reading key texts of Latin literature of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era "(6 credits) But special regulation: it is possible to write a master's thesis in the 36-credit module package If the master's thesis should be written in the area of Linguistic Anthropology and Ancient American Studies, the following additional module amounting to 6 credits must be completed successfully: M.LingAm.6 "Master's degree module" (6 credits / 2 semester hours)

11 40 credits, including achievements in the German Medieval Studies to the extent of at least 20 credits, or d) achievements in Latin Philology to the extent of 40 credits, including achievements in Latin Philology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era or Latin Philology of the Middle Ages to the extent of at least 20 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of Latin. Certification is done via kleines Latinum or a corresponding academic test. The certification according to the second sentence has to be presented by the end of the third semester; enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Musicology Achievements in Musicology to the extent of at least 54 credits, including achievements in the propaedeutic subjects Composition Theory, Paleography / Notation Studies and Organology to the extent of at least 15 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of Latin to the extent of kleines Latinum or certification of language skills according to either Graecum, Hebraicum, Sanskriticum, Arabicum or Sinicum. The certification according to the first sentence has to be presented by November, 15 th with enrollment for the winter semester; enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Eastern European History Possible See studies amounting to 42 credits Achievements in History to the extent of at least 51 credits, including achievements in at least one advanced or in-depth module from Medieval or Modern History to the extent of at least 6 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge of an Eastern European language on

12 the level of EU foreign language test "B" resp. UNIcert II. (usually Russian or Polish). The certification has to be presented by the start of the second semester; enrollment is pending until that condition is met. Philosophy Achievements in Philosophy to the extent of at least 50 credits. None Religious Studies Romance Studies Possible See studies amounting to 42 credits Achievements in Religious Studies or directly religion-related subjects such as Indology, Islamic Studies, Iranian Studies, Theology, Jewish Studies, Ethnology, Sociology (of religion), Egyptology (or similar) to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements with clearly recognizable content (historical, empirical, or systematical) references to religious themes to the extent of at least 36 credits. None Achievements in a discipline of Romance Studies (e.g. Gallo-Romance Studies, Hispanic Studies, Italian Studies, Portuguese Studies, Romance Studies resp. Romance Philology, or a subject of Cultural Studies with appropriate regional focus) to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in Linguistics and Literary Studies to the extent of at least 6 credits. Documentation of sufficient knowledge in a least one of the following Romance languages: a) French at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages b) Italian at level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages c) Portuguese at level B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or d) Spanish at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for

13 Scandinavian Studies Slavic Philology Possible See studies amounting to 42 credits Languages. A further entry requirement is the documentation of basic knowledge of Latin. Certification is accounted for by the kleines Latinum or a university exam on the required skills. Certification may also be conducted by school courses in Latin for at least three years or for two years if started in sixth form with an average grade of at least 4.0. The above documents have to be presented to the Faculty of Arts by September, 30 th for enrollment for the winter semester. The certificates are an enrollment requirement; a pending registration will not take place. a) achievements in Scandinavian Studies or another literary or cultural studies subject with a recognizable relationship to the Scandinavian-speaking to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in one of the Scandinavian languages (Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish) to the extent of at least 25 credits, and b) achievements in the field of Old Norse Studies or Modern Scandinavian Studies to the extent of at least 21 credits. Knowledge of Danish, Norwegian or Swedish to the extent of at least 25 credits a) Achievements in Slavic Philology to the extent of at least 51 credits, including achievements in Slavic Linguistics and Slavic Literature to the extent of at least 13 credits each, or b) achievements in General Linguistics Cultural Studies or equivalent subjects with a recognizable relationship to the Slavic-speaking region to the extent of at least 51 credits, including achievements in either Linguistics or Literary Studies to the extent of at least13 credits. Documentation of knowledge of two Slavic languages to be chosen as first and as second language study at the level B1 of the Common European

14 Framework. Certification of language skills may usually not be older than two years before the date of application for admission to the master's study course. Exempt from the obligation for certification are applicants with at least a ninemonth study or work stay in a country in which the particular Slavic language is the official language, within the last three years prior to the date of the application for approval. Turkish Studies Achievements in Turkish Studies to the extent of at least 50 credits, including achievements in advanced language proficiency of Turkish to the extent of at least 6 credits. Certification of very good knowledge of Turkish, with a special emphasis on the ability to translate and critically analyze modern texts. Certification is accounted for by relevant course work totaling at least 24 credits in language acquisition of Turkish or by at least 18 credits in language acquisition of Turkish and at least 6 credits in language acquisition of another Turkic language. The certification according to the second sentence has to be presented to the Faculty of Arts by September, 30 th for enrollment for the winter semester to semester. The documentation is an enrollment requirement; a pending registration will not take place. Pre-and Early History Achievements in the Pre- and Early History or other archaeologically oriented disciplines (e.g. Egyptology, Ancient American Studies, Archaeology of the Classical and Byzantine World, Archaeology of the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, Hittite Studies, Near Eastern Archaeology) to the extent of 50 credits.
