1 The Catholic University of America Libraries Collection Development Policy Subject Modern Languages and Literatures Mission Modern Languages materials are acquired and maintained by the library to support the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures as they study, research and teach in the subjects of literature, language and culture for French, German, Italian, and Spanish. History In the beginning French, German, and Spanish were three of ten departments in the School of Letters. Italian and Spanish were not offered regularly due to a lack of funds. The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures exists by 1917; French and Spanish were undergraduate degrees while Old Italian was taught by the Department of Celtic. By 1929 the graduate school had a Department of Romance Languages (French and Spanish). The Department of German was formed by 1937 from the departments of German, comparative philology, Celtic, and Slavic. The Department of Modern Languages and of Literatures was formed in The Consortium of Universities decided in 1972 that the doctoral program in German would be offered jointly since enrollment was low. Clientele Clientele served by Modern Languages and Literatures materials in the Library include: Students enrolled in the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degree programs offered by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. Faculty of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures Students and faculty of the departments of Philosophy, Art, History, Greek and Latin, Media Studies, Semitic Languages and Literatures, English, Drama, Education, Medieval and Byzantine Studies, and Early Christian Studies. Other University faculty, students, and staff. Faculty, students, and staff of other WRLC institutions and other local consortia. Other researchers who need to consult specialized materials, primary sources, and language tools not available at their own institutions. Any other clientele served by the subject area collections.

2 Undergraduate programs The undergraduate program consists of 4 majors (French, German, Spanish, and Spanish for International Services) and 4 minors (French, German, Spanish, and Italian). Certificate program in Spanish for Health Care The two types of certificates, basic certificate and advanced certificate, reflect the level of Spanish proficiency of the individual, undergraduate or graduate student. Modern Languages/Secondary Education Joint Program This program allows the undergraduate or the graduate the ability to teach French, German, or Spanish at a secondary school level. The program involves courses in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Department of Education. A minor in Latin American Studies is forthcoming. Graduate programs Masters in Spanish Doctorate in Spanish Courses in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, Catalan, Irish Gaelic, and American Sign Language are offered. Faculty Research Faculty research reflects a wide variety of interests: Medieval studies literature, specifically, French, German, Arabic, Latin, Spanish, and Scandanavian Arthurian literature and medieval lyric Spanish Renaissance, Golden Age, and contemporary literature Hispanic literature, contemporary Latin American literature and colonial studies, and Latin American theater Modern and contemporary French literature and culture Francophone literatures and cultures 18 th century, 19 th century, and modern German literature Italian Renaissance, Golden Age, and contemporary literature; Italian cinema Catalan literature Foreign language teaching methodology, technology and language pedagogy, and technology-enhanced language learning Comparative and applied linguistics Geographical Materials are collected from Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Mexico, South America, Spain, and United States.

3 Language Materials are mostly in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish with minimal coverage of non-european literatures. English translations of primary and secondary works of major authors or texts are added. Publication Dates Material published in the last five years is collected. Retrospective material is regularly purchased to fill out the collection or replace a lost or damaged title. Formats Formats collected include monographs, serials, periodicals, and online databases. New subscriptions for journals are occasionally purchased with an emphasis on acquiring them in electronic format only. Audio-visual material is collected. Textbooks are not collected. A significant amount of older material located in the stacks which has not circulated in a long time has been sent to the WRLC Storage Center. Perkins, ed. Chicago: American Library Association, 1979). Minimal: only a few items purchased beyond very basic works. Basic: highly selective collection that introduces and defines the subject and indicates the varieties of information available elsewhere. Instructional support: collection supports undergraduate or graduate-level coursework and sustained independent study. Research: collection contains materials necessary for dissertations and independent research. Comprehensive: collection is exhaustive.

6 As appropriate: interdisciplinary collecting that is carried out in areas not primarily dedicated to subject-specific research as it is usually conducted at The Catholic University of America, but which is important for the instructional and research requirements of users.
