Participants will also develop critical skills in working with different family groups from divergent cultural backgrounds and understand the processes that affect the development and coping mechanisms of their members. The course will equip participants with the knowledge and skills to apply a range of interventions to families with a range of presenting problems. There will be a strong emphasis on the application of theories of change and models of therapy as they apply to working with children and adolescents. In Year 1 there will be an emphasis understanding family therapy models of care and many of the basic techniques of engaging and working with families from an interactional/systemic perspective. In Year 2 the emphasis will be on case-consultation, research methods and the application of Family Therapy to particular settings or with particular client groups. The course is open to postgraduate professionals working in community, hospital. welfare, clergy or educational settings who wish to improve their knowledge and skills in working with families. It is expected that students will be currently working, or have the potential to work, with families in a counselling context where family work can be applied. Assessment Tasks Typically, three assessment tasks per unit are required. These can include: Essay Case Presentation Reflective Journal Clinical Log Literature Critique Annotated Bibliography Web forums and study tasks All units require students to complete self-directed learning tasks. Please see the current Course Handbook for complete information on semester dates, fees, fee policy and other information on the units of study. 4 Master Family Therapy Overview
5 Course Content and Structure The Master course has been developed to give participants a comprehensive understanding of the principles and implications of interactional/systemic thinking and apply them to diverse families from varied cultural and social backgrounds. There is a strong emphasis on the therapist developing self awareness and critical analysis of the interplay between personal experience and professional development. Participants will examine a number of different frameworks of Family Therapy and develop the critical capacity to review and evaluate the effectiveness of these in practice through the development of research skills. The course aims to teach best practice in family work and is intended for professionals with a graduate degree who work with, or aim to work with, families presenting with emotional and behavioural mental health problems. The course offers theories of change and models of therapy examining repetitive patterns, family structure, different lifestyles, stages of development, power and difference, family life -cycle issues, use of genograms and the structural components of family interviews. It works towards developing participants skills in the practice of family therapy, in self-reflexivity and the use of self in therapy. Students can elect to graduate at Diploma level at completion of 48 credit points at the end of Year 2. The NSW Institute of Psychiatry will confer the award of Diploma or Masters to students upon successful completion of all the necessary course requirements. Master Family Therapy Overview

7 Admission Requirements All students admitted to the Graduate Diploma and Master of Family Therapy are required to have an appropriate undergraduate level degree (or equivalent) and relevant clinical experience. Evidence of this degree must be provided with the application. All students enrolled in this program of study must have access to working with families. Overseas students may be required to demonstrate competency in written and/or spoken English. In this instance students must achieve an IELTS (Academic Strand) overall band of 6.5 or better (with a writing score of 6.0); TOEFL of 575 or better plus Test of Written English (TWE) at 4.5 or better; or TOEFL Test Computer Based score 231 with essay rating of 4.5 or better. The NSWIOP does allow some flexibility in admission requirements and aims to ensure that these requirements do not result in unreasonable barriers to access. For example, students without an undergraduate degree can apply to be considered on the grounds of clinical experience alone. In this situation, students may be required to undertake one unit of study to assess their suitability for ongoing postgraduate level study. Successful completion of this unit of study will allow students to enrol in their chosen programme of study. In order for students to progress through a programme of study (i.e. from Graduate Certificate to Graduate Diploma to Master), a number of conditions must be met as follows: Students must complete all requirements for current units of study before commencing any additional unit of study; To progress from Level 1 Graduate Diploma to Level 2 Graduate Diploma, students must attain prerequisite number of credit points (i.e. 24) and achieve an average mark of 60% or above; To progress from Graduate Diploma to Master level, students must attain the prerequisite number of credit points (i.e. 48) and achieve an average mark of 65% or above. All of the above admission requirements are consistent with AQF entry requirements for each level of higher education award (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma and Master). 8 Flexible Learning Environment E-learning NSWIOP is continually expanding its use of e-learning for the delivery of courses. The aim is to provide students with a more interactive learning experience and to allow greater flexibility and opportunity for access. Students access course materials via Moodle, an online Learning Management System (LMS). All assignments are uploaded through Moodle which uses a plagiarism plugin allowing both students and markers to check work for originality. Moodle is also used for: Web forums Assignments Video podcasts and live streaming Feedback and evaluation Course materials and resources. As part of the learning process, students are often expected to participate in web forums via Moodle, which are used both formally and informally. At a formal level, students may be required to undertake web forum tasks and respond to questions and discussion points. Participation in these activities forms part of the overall assessment for the unit of study. Most of the web forum activities ask for your views and opinions on issues and your postings will be commented on and responded to. At an informal level, students can use the forum to chat to other students, get advice about assignments and discuss any general issues associated with the unit. Increasingly NSWIOP is using recorded (podcast) and live streamed video of lectures and video vignettes for a more engaging experience for our students. Distance Education Distance Education offers the opportunity to study in ways that suit specific circumstances and to adapt a flexible approach to learning. However, it also requires a specific approach to learning which does not necessarily suit everyone or can take a bit of time to get used to. Like all forms of study, it can be affected by life events and unexpected situations. Students are encouraged to speak to the Unit Coordinator if difficulties are experienced with managing a Distance Education workload or events and situations that impact on study (e.g. illness, misadventure). Web Forum Most units of study require students to participate in a web forum as part of the learning experience. Details of this will be included in the unit materials. The web forum can also be used as an informal means of networking with others students e.g. to chat about assignments, ask other students for advice etc. This can be particularly important for students studying by distance education. It is a requirement of enrolment in the Family Therapy program to have internet access. 8 Master Family Therapy Overview
