8 Teesside and Well-being The course is designed to enable students to develop a non-clinical career in public health. It is also for those already working in community development, the voluntary sector, community-led health work, environmental health, health promotion and health and social care who wish to develop specific public health competencies by undertaking relevant parts of the course. Mode: three years full time Year 1 core modules: Biological determinants of health Communication and interpersonal skills Introduction to public health Promoting public health and well-being Research in health Year 2 core modules: Applied epidemiology Developing personal effectiveness for public health practice Dissertation preparation Health and community development Policy and resource allocation Final year core modules: Conference presentation Environmental and sustainable living Evaluating public health Global health Health protection Research project Thames Valley BSc Health Promotion and Public Health The first (Diploma) year of the programme consists of the following Level 5, 20-credit modules: Public Health and Health Promotion in Practice Skills for Critical Appraisal Teaching and Learning for Health Health Literacy Sociology of Health and Health Care plus one free choice module. Students completing six modules at Level 5 may exit the programme with a Diploma of Higher Education in Health Promotion and Public Health. The second (Degree) year of the programme consists of the following Level 6, 20-credit modules: Social Psychology as Applied to Health and Health Care Health: Concepts and Controversies Theories of, and for, Health Promotion Public Health in Century 21 Evidence-based Practice Practice-based Project.
