4 Features of the Leadership-in-Training Sac Dene Canoe Trip Goal The goals of the Leadership-in-Training Sac Dene are (a) to prepare participants for a direct experience as an outdoor leader of children, (b) to train participants to be excellent leaders in their communities and workplaces, (c) to provide and enrich an appreciation of cultural awareness and wilderness awareness, and (d) to provide a supported volunteer counselling experience. Details Location: Mackenzie River. Fly over the river using Google Maps there is remarkable detail. Resources on-line and in libraries are available referencing the Mackenzie River. The Mackenzie is a well-travelled river by industry, local residents as well as recreationalists. One reference in particular is a outfitter s river guide: The Sac Dene journey is largely outside the limits of an easy evacuation. An evacuation may take several of days. The group may need to re-route due to an incident, changing their schedule. Out of respect for the group's safety and comfort, it is essential that applicants be clear with themselves, with their families and with about medical or personal histories that might reasonably be expected to put a group at undue risk or inconvenience. Such information would include fitness, past injuries, or pre-existing conditions/behaviours/attitudes. Families are responsible for the costs of an evacuation, either for medical or behavioural causes. Fees may be between $1, and $2,500.00, including air and ground transportation, accommodations and meals. Expenses for injuries and illnesses may be covered, whereas expenses for behavioural incidents may not be covered. Check your insurance policy to understand your coverage. Sac Dene participants have regular access to health clinics and RCMP detachments, approximately every seven days. Important Dates January: With , telephone, and a group meeting, the Sac Dene participants meet their leaders and each other. They assign research such as descriptions of communities and local conditions, menu ideas, risk management and program ideas June: Families who live close to Calgary meet to assist in packing the Sac Dene food. At that time, participants also get to know each other better and share more specific trip goals and behavioural commitments. The group will use Chilver Lake to practice some of their on-water paddling and risk management procedures. July: Meet at and travel for 2 days to the river by mini-van and truck. On the Mackenzie River, Fort Simpson to Inuvik NWT, 1225 kilometers, seven communities : o o The Sac Dene group spends the summer paddling and exploring the wilderness and the communities of their route, making friends and creating memories. Participants expand specific skills, chosen with their leaders The group spends up to 27 days paddling. Participants must be fit and prepared for repetitive days of paddling, as well as inclement northern weather. Trips may be exposed to a variety of hazards, including, but not limited to the following: cold/hot/wet/dry weather, moving water and its inherent hazards including submersion and entrapment in vegetation or rock, wildlife (including bears), lightning, tree and/or rock fall, cliffs and steep terrain, wind on water, fire and hot liquids, repetitive strain injuries, human hazards found en route and in cities, motor vehicle transportation, human error, and equipment failure Participants learn Healthy Child Development and Outdoor Leadership, in preparation for their co-counselling experience when they return to the main-site at : for details, see the curriculum bullet-list in the Standard Leadership-in-Training program details, above
