3 What is Accreditation Canada's program? A 3 year cycle that organizations use to asses themselves and identify areas to improve the quality of their services Involves examining everyday activities and services against standards of excellence Strong focus on quality improvement, risk management, capacity building, and sustainability 3
4 Benefits of accreditation Organizations have told us that Accreditation Canada's program: is a tool to help make positive changes is an organized method which provides a direction to improve organizational efficiency and effectiveness helps to improve communication, among staff and clients helps to improve teamwork and collaboration enhances client and staff safety helps to build accountability within the community 4

9 Leadership Standards These standards are grouped into four subsections. Each subsection addresses a key management responsibility which organizations, through their leaders, must have in place as part of their pursuit of quality and safety. The four subsections are: Adapting to the environment Strengthening organizational culture and Allocating resources Building the infrastructure to achieve positive outcomes values 9
10 Governance Standards Accreditation Canada's Governance Standards help health organizations meet demands for excellence in governance practice. They are a response to system-wide changes in health care delivery structures and the increasing need for public accountability. The four subsections are: Functioning as an effective governing body Developing a clear direction for the organization Supporting the organization to achieve its mandate Being accountable and achieving sustainable results 10
11 Leadership and Governance Working together these standards: Support on-going quality improvement Improve safety for clients and staff Mitigate your risks Builds processes and systems for better health outcomes Builds capacity within your organization 11
12 Leadership and Governance Working together these standards: Support organizations to achieve higher levels of integration of services, efficiently and effectiveness Promote collaboration amongst organizations departments and partners Support building and maintaining accountability to staff, clients and the broader community 12
13 Example of leadership and governance standards working together Governance standard: 4.1 The governing body works in collaboration with the organizations leaders to develop the organization s mission statement. Leadership standard: 4.0 the organization s leaders develop and implement the operational plans, infrastructure, and management systems to meet the scope of services and achieve the strategic goals and objectives The organization s leaders provide input and advice about the organization s strategic direction. 13
14 Example of leadership and governance standards working together Governance standard: 5.0 The governing body defines and models the organizational values The governing body works with the organizations leaders to define or update the organizations value statement. Leadership standard: 5.0 The organization s leaders deliver services and make decisions according to the organization s values and ethics the organizations leaders provide input in defining or updating the organizations value statement. 14
