2 Accreditation in Canada In 2013, CECA and CCSA commissioned a cross-canada scan of accreditation processes and standards for publicly funded and independent residential substance abuse treatment agencies. The report found that one third of facilities across Canada are not presently accredited and that in larger provinces, three quarters of facilities are not accredited

4 CCSA-CECA Accreditation Stakeholders Working Group Mission: To support publicly funded treatment agencies in the delivery of care through the supports provided by an accreditation process. **While the Working Group strives to achieve accreditation for all, this initiative does not address facilities that are associated with hospitals (given that they are currently part of hospital accreditation) or that are privately funded

7 10 Common Practices to Support Accreditation All six of Canada s accreditation bodies offer the following 10 services to facilitate the success of residential treatment facilities in the accreditation process. Promoting organizational capacity building through: 1. Training programs customized to meet the needs of the facility. 2. Support for developing effective governance structures and service monitoring and evaluation systems

8 10 Common Practices to Support Accreditation Providing access to accreditation resources, tools and networks, such as: 3. Websites and online educational resources featuring information about the accreditation process. 4. Research on the impact of accreditation on the organization and its services. 5. Case studies and testimonials from similar organizations that have completed the accreditation process. 6. Digital and print materials to promote accredited status. 7. Opportunities to develop a network with accredited organizations for support throughout the process

9 10 Common Practices to Support Accreditation Supporting programs in achieving accreditation with: 8. Support personnel within the accreditation body available as a resource to facility staff. 9. Standards that are relevant to the context of residential addictions treatment, based on best practices and achievable by organizations of different sizes. 10. Independent, third party reviewers and surveyors who are well trained and skilled, and who understand residential addictions treatment

10 Accreditation Webinars CCSA and CECA hosted two webinars to raise awareness about accreditation as well as the objectives of the Working Group. The webinars featured: an overview of the 10 Common Practices to Support Accreditation document; information on the myths and benefits associated with accreditation; first-hand testimonials of treatment facility representatives that have successfully completed the accreditation process; and information about the upcoming Getting Started resource

11 Accreditation: Getting Started This resource is targeted to residential treatment service providers and provides: an overview of the concept of accreditation programming in Canada; a brief summary of the literature surrounding the benefits of accreditation to the residential facility, its clients, staff members and government funders; concrete examples of some of the tools and training programs available to facilities and their staff to support them throughout the accreditation process; a checklist outlining key elements to look for when determining which available accreditation programs is the best fit for a specific residential treatment facility; and individual case studies to provide a more in-depth look into the experiences of different treatment facilities throughout the accreditation process

12 Regional Consultations Four regional consultations will be hosted by CCSA and CECA in British Columbia, Alberta and Ontario. Participants will include: representatives from local publicly funded residential treatment facilities (both accredited and non-accredited); local decision makers; and CECA-CCSA Accreditation Stakeholder Working Group members. The objective of the consultations will be to meet with our partners inperson to: discuss the benefits and supports offered through accreditation; and hear from the audience what tools are required to increase the capacity of local facilities to become accredited

13 Next Steps Future activities being considered by the Working Group include: Identifying strategies for engaging privately funded facilities in becoming accredited; Developing or scaling existing tools and resources that assist consumers in choosing a treatment facility for themselves or their loved ones; and Working with the accrediting bodies to promote general awareness of accreditation to the public, especially for those individuals selecting a treatment facility for the first time
