1 NURSING INSTRUCTOR, MENTAL HEALTH 1 and 2 GENERAL This is professional nursing instruction work in a provincial mental health care unit. Employees of this class provide instruction to students enrolled in the two-year Registered Psychiatric Nurse (R.P.N.) program. Incumbents are required to design and implement training courses utilizing accepted psychiatric nursing theory techniques and clinical demonstrations. Supervision is received from senior nursing instructors. TYPICAL DUTIES In consultation with senior personnel, plans the general content of courses offered in R.P.N. program. Prepares and presents lectures employing acceptable techniques, discussions, demonstrations, reviews and testing. Observes, assesses nursing students performance in clinical situations and provides supplementary instruction as required. Arranges field trips for students. Prepares and administers examinations, scores papers, maintains class records, evaluates students' performance in verbal and written form. Participates in staff meetings. Counsels students as required. Keeps informed of current developments in field of psychiatric nursing and teaching. Serves on committees as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
2 Knowledge, Abilities and Skills QUALIFICATIONS Thorough knowledge of professional nursing theory and practices. Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods of psychiatric nursing. Good knowledge of teaching methods and techniques applicable to psychiatric nursing. Ability to relate with the staff, students and patients. Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form. Education, Training and Experience Nursing Instructor 1 Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse with minimum nursing experience of one year; or Bachelor of Nursing. Nursing Instructor 2 Registered Psychiatric Nurse or Registered Nurse with a university degree, the content of which has relevance to the nursing curriculum, plus one year's teaching experience; or Bachelor of Nursing with six months' teaching experience as a Nursing Instructor 1. Physical Standards Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned.
3 NURSING INSTRUCTOR, MENTAL HEALTH 3 GENERAL Reporting to the Director, Mental Health Nursing Education, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the planning, direction and evaluation of programs carried out by the faculty in line with school policies and curriculum requirements. This position carries both teaching and administrative responsibilities and assumes full administrative responsibilities for the school in the absence of the Director. TYPICAL DUTIES Acts as team co-ordinator for the faculty directing and evaluating the program as carried out in the hospital. Supervises, directs and assigns clinical areas and curriculum content areas to faculty members. Ensures that students receive the required learning and practical experiences to meet the requirements of the R.P.N. program. Supervises and evaluates the community aspects of the program. Organizes in-service training programs for faculty members. Assists with budget preparation for the educational programs. Participates in the instructional program assuming responsibility for one or more teaching areas including assignments, testing, evaluation and records. Interviews and assesses prospective students. Counsels students as required. Assumes responsibility for the school in the absence of the Director. Performs other duties as assigned.

5 NURSING INSTRUCTOR, MENTAL HEALTH 4 GENERAL Reporting to the Senior Nursing Administrative Officer, the incumbent is responsible for the direction and effective administration of the School of Nursing and nursing education programs in a provincial institution. TYPICAL DUTIES Responsible for the overall planning, administration and conduct of the school ensuring that standards are maintained. Responsible for budget preparation and expenditures of the school. Represents the school to the general public and other educational and health facilities. Initiates and prepares contractual agreements between the school and affiliated agencies. Recommends improvements for the curriculum by continuous evaluation and modification to meet the changing needs of society. Encourages and facilitates educational advancement of faculty members. Assists in recruiting professional staff. Serves on committees pertaining to the nursing programs. Public speaking as required. Performs other duties as assigned.
