1 Athletic Training The Major: Housed in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, in the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement, the Athletic Training major provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to enter the profession of athletic training. The Athletic Training program aims to connect the classroom with the clinical practice through a hand-on approach to learning. The major is designed to provide the professional preparation and eligibility to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). 3 Exercise and Movement Science The Major: The Exercise and Movement Science B.S. degree program, housed in the Department of Rehabilitation and Movement within the College of Nursing and Health Services, provides balance in general and professional education. Majors study of the theory and applications of exercise and movement sciences in health, fitness, and prevention in a variety of populations and can select an academic minor to tailor their education to their individual objectives and goals. After graduation, majors are qualified to pursue several clinical certifications, such as ACSM Exercise Specialist, Specialist in Gerontology, or NSCA/Personal Trainer. 5 Medical Laboratory Science The Major: The Medical Laboratory Science BS degree program in the College of Nursing and Health Services offers three concentrations. The Clinical Laboratory Science concentration prepares majors to be involved in the development, performance, and evaluation of laboratory tests. The Molecular Diagnostics concentration applies molecular techniques and methodologies for diagnostic testing purposes. The Public Health Laboratory Science concentration focuses on using microbiology, chemistry and molecular biology for public health testing. All physician-ordered lab tests, from therapeutic drug monitoring to bacterial identification, are performed by medical laboratory scientists. The core curriculum, mandated by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences, consists of courses in anatomy and physiology, inorganic and organic chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, immunology and mathematics. Clinical course work includes hematology, immunohematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, and microscopy. Majors have access to well-equipped lecture rooms, student laboratories and an excellent medical library. Practicing internships are provided at Fletcher Allen Health Care, in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and at the Vermont Department of Health Laboratory. The laboratory practica offer computer interfaced instrumentation using the latest methods and technologies. Clinical experience will teach majors the skills and theoretical knowledge to perform laboratory procedures, to recognize and solve problems, to assume future leadership roles, to carry out research and to educate others. All of the clinical courses include a laboratory practicum where majors work one-on-one with a staff technologist, gaining hands on experience in diagnostic laboratory medicine and public health. 7 Nuclear Medicine Technology The Major: Nuclear Medicine combines chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer technology, and medicine in using radioactivity to diagnose and treat disease. The Nuclear Medicine Technology BS degree program in the College of Nursing and Health Services is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology. Nuclear medicine technology is the medical specialty concerned with the use of small amounts of radioactive materials for diagnosis, therapy, and research. Nuclear medicine provides information about both the structure and function of virtually every major organ system. UVM's medical school resources and its proximity to the largest medical center in the region offer a great amount of first-hand experience; producing majors with high success rates in their professional examinations. 9 Nursing The Major: The Department of Nursing offers a Bachelor of Science degree program that is approved by the Vermont State Board of Nursing and accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. Nursing graduates are able to provide nursing care to individuals of all ages and families from diverse cultural backgrounds in any setting offering health care services. The Nursing curriculum balances professional courses with those in the liberal arts and sciences which serve as a foundation and background for the nursing courses. Clinical preparation begins in the second year of study. Students observe and participate in the provision of health care for individuals, families and groups at a wide variety of health care agencies. 11 Radiation Therapy The Major: Radiation Therapy is a medical specialty which uses ionizing radiation such as X-rays, gamma radiation, and electron beams in the treatment of benign and malignant tumors. Majors take foundational courses in human anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, computer science and mathematics in preparation for radiation therapy courses, which apply academic knowledge to the treatment of disease. The University of Vermont is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, so in addition to the Bachelor of Science in Radiation Therapy, majors are eligible for state licensure exams and national certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists as a radiation therapist. Radiation therapists work directly with cancer patients and other health-care practitioners in the daily treatment of patients, using radiation-producing equipment.
