1 Athletic Training The Major: Housed in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences, in the Department of Exercise and Movement, the Athletic Training major provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to enter the profession of athletic training. The Athletic Training program aims to connect the classroom with the clinical practice through a hand-on approach to learning. The major is designed to provide the professional preparation and eligibility to sit for the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) examination and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). 3 Art Education The Major: The Art Education Program serves students with a passion for art and a commitment to education. The major is housed in both the Department of Art and the College of Education and Social Sciences. Majors will acquire a deep involvement in studio experience and a solid background in art history as well as knowledge of educational philosophy and practice through intense and varied fieldwork. The course of study leads to a degree in Education and State Certification as an art teacher, kindergarten through grade 12. The program is completed with a full semester of teaching experience under the supervision of a master art educator. 5 Early Childhood PreK-3 Education The Major: UVM s Early Childhood Program prepares students to become skilled and caring professionals with children from birth through grade three. The program is approved by the Vermont State Department of Education and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Students in the program begin observations in their first year at UVM and are working directly with children by their sophomore year. 7 Early Childhood Special Education The Major: The University of Vermont is the only institution of Higher Education in the state that prepares early childhood special educators. With an increasing demand for early childhood special educators, the Early Childhood Special Education program attracts majors who provide individualized, familycentered special education and early intervention services to children from birth through age five. Majors begin their first two years sharing coursework with the Early Childhood PreK-3 Program, developing skills to work with children from birth to age five. In the second half of the program, majors focus on the educational and developmental needs of children from birth to age five with special needs. The Vermont State Department of Education, which has reciprocity with many states and the District of Columbia, approves the Elementary Education program and it is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Majors complete coursework in general education, their major concentration, and professional preparation. Majors observe and assist in public schools as early as their sophomore year and gain essential experience through a senior year teaching assignment. 13 Human Development and Family Studies The Major: The Human Development and Family Studies Program helps majors understand individual and family development across the life span. Majors develop close relationships with faculty members who are acutely aware of their role in supporting students throughout their college years. Faculty members take pride in their scholarship, teaching, and involvement both at UVM and in the larger community. Students begin their field placement within their first year, working in community service-based or volunteer positions. As students move beyond their first year they encounter an increasing array of courses and experiences that allow them to explore further what they are learning about themselves, about human development, and about the contexts within which development occurs. 15 Middle Level Education The Major: The Middle Level Education Program prepares teachers to work in schools that include any or all of grades five through eight. Unlike many other institutions, which combine middle level education with either elementary or secondary programs, UVM s Middle Level Education Program recognizes the special and unique needs of students ages who are going through physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes. Faculty members serve as both educators and academic advisors, maintaining an open system of communication with continuous support for majors. Prospective students must audition before entering the program, as sufficient training and natural musical ability is necessary to justify a career in music education. Music Education majors take courses in education in addition to vocal and instrumental courses in the Music Department. Through academic and field-based experiences, majors develop the knowledge and skills essential for designing and implementing developmentally appropriate physical education programs. With close interaction between faculty and students on a daily basis, majors active involvement in professional activities is supported. Fieldbased experiences begin in the second year, with a minimum of 60 hours in elementary and secondary settings prior to a teaching internship.
