3 Bristol Gigabit Testbed A city scale digital infrastructure linking people and enabling test and experimentation with new technologies and applications at the leading edge

4 Background + Data has become a ubiquitous utility + Existing service networks struggling to keep up + Service networks not valid experimental platforms + Ability to commercialise technologies/applications limited by inability to demonstrate at scale. + High risk profile associated with such opportunities until scale achieved. + Not about access to optical fibre. + Need for city scale test-beds able to simulate service networks of the future

Rediffusion ducting + BCC BNet, city wide public service network + Bnet and University of Bristol networks physically linked City scale public digital infrastructure unparalleled in the UK and rare globally. + BCC awarded 11.3m from DCMS Urban Broadband Fund for Gigabit Bristol + Funding from allocated for city wide digital test infrastructure, the Bristol Gigabit Test-bed + Blue Crystal

13 Access Conditions + No commercial traffic Not a cheap alternative to commercial connectivity + Experimentation, R&D commercial/academic/educational + Not for profit but does need to cover costs will work in collaboration where possible + Pricing 100 per Gbit per month secondary access connection at user cost charge for configuration and use of assets
