Research and medical literature document that health care professionals have been and continue to be victims of violent patient assaults. Health care professionals responding to a patient who is in need of medical and/or psychiatric care have been assaulted and/or injured when attempting to render health care services. Recent studies reveal that incidents occurring in an emergency room, a mental health facility, or during calls for emergency services have been identified as some of the many potential situations where serious assaults are likely. It is evident there is a need to develop strategies and skills for the health care professional in subject control and even self defense techniques. These skills and techniques must be designed to be highly retainable, efficient, and must maximize the ability of the health care professional and security personnel to control various levels of resistance. It is crucial that the health care and security professional s safety is maximized as well as the patient and others who happen to be on the scene. The PPCT VPM Training System blends the highly successful PPCT philosophy, principles and control measures to the basic needs of the health care professional setting. Control methods for this training are engineered to defend the health care professional from patient assaults and to control passive and defensive actions, active aggression and life-threatening attacks. All of the control measures have been analyzed by the medical community and evaluated by various doctors relative to each technique s risk of physical injury. These

Before any administrator decides on any type of training system, he or she should first examine how its methodology was developed, the history of that program s success, and of course, how that system s methodology can minimize liability.
