VOIP HISTORY, MAXIS ONE VOIP AND HOSTED PBX BACKGROUND, AND COMMON VOIP QUERIES: History and Background For the past 50 years companies have been using traditional old fashioned telephone and PBX systems. These old fashioned systems routed telephone communications traffic over hardwired lines that the phone company utilities planted in the ground, placed underwater, and strung onto telephone polls throughout the country and internationally. Approximately years ago, internet or web-based communications was developed to facilitate the transmission of data through internet protocols. Around the same time, mobile/wireless telephone communications appeared that enabled individuals to send and received telephone calls as long as the device was on a network in an area that had appropriate towers and/or antennas to facilitate transmission. This old fashioned outdated technology required separate networks for voice, data, and mobile communications. However, now with the MAXIS ONE VOIP telephony revolution, organizations are empowered to integrate all of its communications requirements into an easy to use, cost effective, and Page 6 of 19

energized system. MAXIS ONE VOIP provides your organization with the mechanism to converge voice, data and mobile networks into a single easy to establish, manage, and monitor unified system. What is MAXIS ONE VOIP Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and MAXIS Hosted PBX? VoIP refers to the diffusion of voice traffic over internet-based networks. Internet Protocols were originally designed for data networking. Following the success of the use of internet protocols (IPs) for the networking of data, IP has now been adapted to voice networking. MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX can facilitate tasks and deliver services that might be cumbersome or costly to implement when using old fashioned/traditional PSTN. It is important to note that more than one phone call can be transmitted on the same broadband phone line. MAXIS ONE VOIP can facilitate the addition of unlimited telephone extensions/lines for businesses. MAXIS ONE VOIP empowers your organization to create an environment of UNIFIED COMMUNICATIONS that allows integration of your MAXIS ONE VOIP Service with other web-based services such as video teleconferencing, messaging, etc. VoIP (also referred to as VoIP telephony and Internet telephony) refers to technology that enables routing of voice conversations over the Internet or a computer network. Phone calls can be placed to anywhere/anyone including other telephone numbers in the MAXIS ONE VOIP Network, telephone numbers to old fashioned PSTN phone lines, mobile devices, PDAs, etc. MAXIS ONE VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is basically the transmission of voice traffic over MAXIS ONE Hosted-based networks. Initially designed for data networking, the Internet Protocol was adapted to voice networking following its successful positioning as the global standard for data networking. Unlike Skype and other services, with MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Systems, end users are not limited to making and receiving calls through the MAXIS ONE VOIP network. With MAXIS ONE VOIP even old fashioned/traditional phone lines can be used to increase call quality and availability. With the use of MAXIS ONE VOIP Services incoming PSTN/telephone lines can be converted to MAXIS ONE VOIP digital quality telephone communications. Thus, end users can utilize existing telephone equipment to receive higher quality cost effective telephone services with enhanced functionality. MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Systems provide mobility to employees and flexibility for expanding or reorganizing concerns in a manner that is much easier and cost effective compared to old fashion/traditionally expensive telephone services. ATA Example Used by MAXIS ONE VOIP Clients MAXIS ONE VOIP offers an incredible selection of Digital VOIP and ATA devices. What is a Softphone and How Can It Be Used with MAXIS ONE VOIP Service? With MAXIS ONE VOIP Service, the client can send or receive telephone calls with any softphone, mobile device, PDA, or landline. With MAXIS ONE VOIP, the voice communications is carried through the internet instead of the traditional PSTN telephony system. As with all internet connectivity, the larger the bandwidth (or pipe) utilized for internet connectivity, the better the quality of the service. All that the user requires is a broadband connection (DSL, cable, TI, or T3), a connection to MAXIS ONE VOIP, equipment registered on the MAXIS ONE VOIP network, and/or a headset with a microphone and/or a sound card. Additional Definitions: SIS Session Initiation Protocol a protocol developed by the IETF MMUSIC Working Group and proposed standard for initiating, modifying, and terminating an interactive user session that involves multimedia elements such as video, voice, instant messaging, online games, and virtual reality. PSTN the Public Switched Telephone Network is the concentration of the world's public circuit-switched telephone networks, in much the same way that the Internet is the concentration of the MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted packet-switched network. ISDN Integrated Services Digital Network is a type of circuit switched telephone network system that is designed to allow digital (as opposed to analog) transmission of voice and data over ordinary telephone copper wires. Use of ISDN results in better sound quality and resolution at much higher speeds than are available with old fashioned analog systems. PBX Private Branch Exchange (also called Private Business Exchange) is a telephone exchange that is owned by a private business, as opposed to one owned by a common carrier or a telephone company. Page 8 of 19

IVR In telephony, Interactive Voice Response a computerized system that allows a person, typically a telephone caller, to select an option from a voice menu and otherwise interface with a computer system. DID Direct Inward Dialing (also called DDI in Europe) is a feature offered by telephone companies for use with their customers' PBX system, whereby the telephone company (telco) allocates a range of numbers all connected to their customer's PBX. RFC Request for Comments (plurals Requests for Comments but RFCs) is one of a series of numbered Internet informational documents and standards very widely followed by both commercial software and freeware in the Internet and Unix communities. ACRONYMS: VOIP: Voice over Internet Protocol BTN: Billing Telephone Number LOA: Letter of Authorization LNP: Local Number Portability PBX: Private Branch Exchange PSTN: Public Switched Telephone Number (telephone service through traditional telephone utilities such as Verizon) ATA: Analogue Telephone Adapter an ATA plugs into the router or modem to convert the analogue signal to a digital signal that can be transmitted over the internet. DID: Direct Indirect Dialing SIP: Session Initiation Protocol What do the terms FXS and FXO mean? FXS and FXO are the name of ports used by Analog phone lines (also known as POTS - Plain Old Telephone Service) or phones. FXS - Foreign Exchange Subscriber interface is the port that actually delivers the analog line to the subscriber. In other words it is the plug on the wall that delivers a dial tone, battery current and ring voltage. FXO - Foreign Exchange Office interface is the port that receives the analog line. It is the plug on the phone or fax machine, or the plug(s) on your analog phone system. It delivers an onhook/off-hook indication (loop closure). Since the FXO port is attached to a device, such as a fax or phone, the device is often called the FXO device. Page 9 of 19

FXO and FXS are always paired, i.e. similar to a male/female plug. Without a PBX, a phone is connected directly to the FXS port provided by a telephone company. FXS / FXO without a PBX If you have a PBX, then you connect the lines provided by the telephone company to the PBX and then the phones to the PBX. Therefore, the PBX must have both FXO ports (to connect to the FXS ports provided by the telephone company) and FXS ports (to connect the phone or fax devices to). FXS / FXO with a PBX FXS, FXO & MAXIS ONE VOIP HOSTED PBX You will come across the terms FXS and FXO when deciding to acquire MAXIS ONE VOIP Services. MAXIS ONE VOIP Services enables you to connect analog and digital VoIP phones to MAXIS ONE VOIP Network and Hosted PBX via the Internet. FXO Gateway To connect analog phone lines to a MAXIS ONE VOIP System and Hosted PBX, you will utilize a FXO Gateway. The MAXIS ONE FXO Gateway will allow you to connect the FXS port to the FXO port of the gateway. The FXO Gateway will translate the analog phone signal and line to a MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted call. There are a number of different FXO Gateways available. Page 10 of 19

FXS Gateway FXS Gateways are utilized to connect one or more lines of a traditional PBX to the MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted telephone system. Thus, enabling you to connect analog phones to the MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted telephone system. You will utilize a FXS Gateway because you want to connect the FXO ports (which normally are connected to the telephone company) to the MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted System via the Internet. FXS Adapter a.k.a. ATA Adapter A FXS or ATA Adapter is used to connect an analog phone or fax machine to a MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted System. Page 11 of 19

CONNECTIVITY FXS/FXO PROCEDURES TECHNICALLY, HERE IS HOW ITS WORKS: OUTBOUND CALLING: When you wish to place a call, you pick up the phone (the FXO device). The FXS port detects that you have gone off hook. You dial the phone number, which is passed as Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency (DTMF) digits to the FXS port. INBOUND RECEIPT OF CALLS: The FXS port receives a call. A ring tone is delivered via voltage to the attached FXO device. The phone rings, you pick up the headset or select the speakerphone option and you answer the call. Ending the call normally the FXS port relies on either of the connected FXO devices to end the call. What is a Voice Mail System? A voice mail system is a centralized system used to send, store, and retrieve audio messages. The concept is similar to an answering machine. With MAXIS ONE VOIP, the transmission and storage of the message is accomplished digitally through the Internet and stored on the MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted PBX. However, with MAXIS ONE VOIP Voice Mail, you have maximum flexibility and you can even receive your voice mail messages through an attached audio wave file sent as an attachment to an message. Each extension in a phone system can be associated/linked to a voice mailbox. Thus, when the number is dialed and the line is not answered or is busy, the caller is sent to a previously recorded message instructing the caller to either leave a message or be routed to alternative options such as other parties/extensions including a receptionist or automated attendant. A voice mail system in a business or organizational environment is essential in facilitating external and internal communications flowing seamlessly and efficiently. MAXIS ONE VOIP Voice Mail is extremely flexible and offers greatly enhanced functionality. What is a PBX Phone System? PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. PBX is a private telephone network used within a company. The end users of the PBX phone system share a number of outside lines for making external phone calls. A PBX system connects the internal telephones within a business and also connects those telephones to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted PBX utilizes Internet Protocol to transmit and manage all calls. With the old fashioned traditional PBXs, the organization was required to expend an incredible amount of money to purchase the hardware, software, internal wiring, and expert telephone technician to install, implement, operate, maintain, and upgrade the PBX and telephone system. ALL OF THESE EXPENSES (which can amount to tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars) ARE ELIMINATED WITH A MAXIS ONE VOIP HOSTED PBX. Page 12 of 19

What are the benefits of an MAXIS HOSTED PBX? Much easier to install & configure than an old fashioned PBX. Your organization can utilize its existing IT personnel instead of acquiring the services of an expensive professional telephone technician. Easier to manage as a result of a simple web based configuration interface. No need for separate telephone line wiring. Allows all users to Plug and Play their telephone devices anywhere in and out of the office. The end user simply takes their phone and plugs it into the nearest ethernet port while MAINTAINING THEIR EXISTING TELEPHONE NUMBER!!! TAKE YOUR OFFICE PHONE TO YOUR HOME AND RECEIVE TELEPHONE CALLS AT HOME WHEN YOUR OFFICE NUMBER IS DIALED OR HAVE THOSE CALLS ROUTED TO YOUR MOBILE DEVICE OR PDA WITHOUT THE CALLER KNOWING YOUR LOCATION. You can connect your telephone devices directly to a standard computer network port (which can be shared with the adjacent computer). Software phones/mobile devices/pdas can also be installed directly into the PC. Thus, you do not need to install and maintain a separate wiring network for the phone system. This provides your organization much more significant flexibility to add users and extensions. If you are moving into an office and have not yet installed phone wiring, you can save a huge amount of money. Allows easy roaming - calls can be diverted anywhere in the world. UNBELIEVABLE REAL SAVINGS EVERY SINGLE MONTH. WHY PAY MORE FOR LESS FUNCTIONALITY, FLEXIBILITY, AND SERVICE? Scalable the level of your organization s service can be easily increased or decreased as your organization s requirements change. Most organizations outgrow their telephone systems which require them to expend large sums of money to expand their system with the growing concern. In many instance, when the organization grows, the telephone system become obsolete and an entirely new extremely costly telephone system along with new hardware and software is procured. NO MORE. With a MAXIS ONE VOIP System, managing growth is as easy as adding a new telephone or device such as a fax machine. Enhanced reporting and oversight regarding the utilization of your organization s telephone system. Better overview of system status and calls. MAXIS ONE VOIP utilizes web-based applications and software programs that enable end users to easily interface and use the features of the system. Anyone with an understanding of computers and information technology can install, configure, maintain, and enhance its MAXIS ONE VOIP System and Hosted PBX. Again, with the old fashioned telephone and PBX systems, your organization must employ an expensive professional telephone technician, expensive and extensive wiring, and expensive hardware and software. In addition, to the incredible cost savings to implement the system, your organization will realize significant cost savings every single month. Better customer service and productivity. With MAXIS ONE VOIP it is much easier for developers to integrate the telephone system with other business applications. For Page 13 of 19

example: upon receipt of an incoming call, the recipient can automatically bring up the caller s customer record and interface with the business information available in the organization s other computer files. This enhanced functionality will dramatically improve customer service and substantially slash overall costs by reducing the employee s time spent on each call. Moreover, the expanded functionality also allows outbound calls can be placed directly from a program such as Outlook which removes the need for the user to type in the phone number. Think about it. You receive an message and with the click of a button you can be connected to that individual through your MAXIS ONE VOIP Service. 15 What are MAXIS VOIP Telephones? Although a great deal of information has been discussed above regarding the use of old fashioned analogue telephones and merely converting said telephones with the assistance of an ATA for use in a MAXIS ONE Digital VOIP System, THE BEST MANNER TO MAXIMIZE THE ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY OF THIS INCREDIBLY ADVANCED TELEPHONE SYSTEM IS TO AQUIRE NEW MAXIS ONE TELEPHONES. THE MAXIS ONE OFFERED TELEPHONES PROVIDE SUCH A HIGH LEVEL OF ENHANCED APPLICABILITY THAT YOUR ENTIRE PHONE SYSTEM WILL BE TRANSFORMED INTO THE NEW MILLENIUM. FURTHERMORE, THE QUALITY AND RESONANCE OF THE SOUND QUALITY WITH A NEW MAXIS ONE TELEPHONE CANNOT BE MATCHED WITH AN OLD FASHIONED TELEPHONE. What is an Auto-Attendant? Auto-attendant (or automated attendant) is a term commonly used in telephony to describe a voice menu system that allows callers to be transferred to an extension without going through a telephone operator or receptionist. The auto-attendant is also known as a digital receptionist. For a caller to find a user on a phone system, a dial-by-name directory is usually available. This feature lists users by name, allowing the caller to press a key to automatically ring the extension of a user once his/her extension is announced by the auto attendant. If a user is not available, the auto-attendant directs callers to the appropriate voice mailbox of the user to leave a voic message. Having an auto-attendant in a phone system is a very useful and cost-effective feature for a business, as it replaces/helps the human operator by automating and simplifying the incoming phone call routing procedure. What is DID - Direct Inward Dialing? DID - Direct Inward Dialing (also called DDI in Europe) is a feature offered by telephone companies for use with their customers' PBX system. When DID is being utilized, the telephone company allocates a range of numbers associated with one or more phone lines. The use of DIDs enable the assignment of personal numbers to each employee without requiring a separate phone line for each employee. Thus, telephony traffic can be divided and managed more easily. DID requires an ISDN or Digital line. MAXIS ONE VOIP can assign a range of numbers to an organization with the use DIDs. What is SIP - Session Initiation Protocol? Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted telephony signaling protocol used to establish, modify and terminate MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted telephone calls. SIP describes the communications required to establish a telephone call. The details regarding the commencement and termination of the call are further described in the SDP protocol. The protocol resembles the HTTP protocol. SIP is text based very open and flexible. Page 15 of 19

Example of MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted Call Session Between 2 Telephones A MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted Call Session Between 2 Phones Is Established As Follows: The calling phone sends out an invite The called phone sends an information response 100 Trying back. When the called phone starts ringing a response 180 Ringing is sent back When the caller picks up the phone, the called phone sends a response 200 OK The calling phone responds with ACK acknowledgement Now the actual conversation is transmitted as data via RTP When the person calling hangs up, a BYE request is sent to the calling phone The calling phone responds with a 200 OK. It s as simple as that! The MAXIS ONE VOIP Protocol (SIP) is logical and easy to understand. Thus, SIP is an internet protocol for live communications. SIP is utilized to establish and terminate voice or video calls. SIP is a signaling protocol used to create, modify, and terminate sessions with one or more participant callers. A session can be a straightforward two-way phone call or it can be a multi-media conference session with many participants. MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX allows our clients to avail themselves of advanced and enhanced services that were unthinkable just a few years ago such as internet teleconferencing, portability, expansive multi users, instant messaging, voice and video communication, data collaboration, online gaming, application sharing, and much more. Page 16 of 19

MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Systems are doing for real-time communications what HTTP did for the web and SMTP for . It is the main driver in the acceleration of the MAXIS ONE VOIP Telephony revolution. With MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Telephony, a viable alternative to old fashioned cumbersome and expensive traditional PBX has finally emerged. MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Telephone Systems deliver features that enhance users mobility and productivity, while empowering the user to realize substantial costsaving advantages. MAXIS ONE VOIP and Hosted PBX Telephone Services will make old fashioned cumbersome and expensive PBX hardware that required extensive, intrusive and expensive wiring, and the use of expensive professional telephone technicians obsolete. What are MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted Methods/Requests and Responses? MAXIS Uses Methods/Requests and Corresponding Responses to Establish Call Sessions What is T38 fax? T38 is a protocol that describes how to send a fax over a computer data network. T38 is used because fax data cannot be sent over a computer data network in the same manner as voice communications. In essence, with T38 a fax is converted to an image, sent to the other T38 fax device and then converted back to an analog fax signal. Most MAXIS ONE ATAs support T38 reliably. Page 17 of 19

How Does a FAX Operate In a MAXIS ONE VOIP Environment? FAX was designed for analog networks, and does not travel well over a typical computer network. The reason for this is that FAX communication uses the signal in a different manner than typical voice communications. When computer technology digitizes and compresses analog voice communication, it is optimized for Voice communications, not FAX communications. To facilitate an easy transition from analogue FAX to MAXIS ONE VOIP FAX Services, MAXIS ONE offers several digital VOIP FAX machines. In the alternative, if you desire to utilize your existing FAX machine, all that we need to add is an inexpensive ATA that supports the MAXIS protocol. IN ADDITION, WITH MAX FAX, IT IS ALSO POSSIBLE TO CONVERT TO A COMPUTER BASED FAX WHEREBY YOU CAN RECEIVE AND FORWARD FAXES AS PDFs ATTACHED TO S. MAX FAX PROVIDES INCREDIBLE ENHANCED FUNCTIONALITY AND FLEXIBILITY. SEE MAX FAX LITERATURE FOR A FULL DESCRIPTION OF THESE ADVANTAGEOUS SERVICES. Diagram of Analogue Fax Machine Deployed on a MAXIS ONE VOIP Network What is MAXIS ONE VOIP Forking? MAXIS ONE VOIP Forking refers to the process of "forking" a single MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted call to multiple endpoints. This is a very powerful feature allowing a single call to ring many endpoints at the same time. With MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted Forking you can have your desk telephone ring at the same time as your softphone/mobile device/pda. This provides MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY AND PORTABILITY. ANSWER YOUR OFFICE DESK TELEPHONE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. For example, you could use your MAXIS ONE VOIP Hosted Forking to ring your office desk phone and your IPHONE OR ANDROID at the same time. You can receive the call easily from either device. WITH MAXIS ONE VOIP, NO FORWARDING RULES ARE NECESSARY FOR BOTH DEVICES TO RING SIMULTANEOUSLY. IN THE SAME Page 18 of 19

LIGHT, MAXIS ONE VOIP FORKING CAN BE UTILIZED TO EMPOWER A SECRETARY TO ANSWER CALLS TO HIS/HER BOSS S EXTENSION WHEN THE BOSS IS NOT AVAILABLE. What is ECHO Cancellation? Echo cancellation is the process of removing echo from a voice communication in order to improve the voice call quality. Echo cancellation is often required because speech compression techniques and packet processing delays generate echo. There are 2 types of echo: acoustic echo and hybrid echo. Echo cancellation not only improves sound quality but it also reduces bandwidth consumption because of its silence suppression technique. What Does ENUM Mean? ENUM stands for Telephone Number Mapping. Behind this abbreviation hides a great idea: To be reachable anywhere in the world with the same number and via the best and cheapest route. ENUM takes a phone number and links it to an internet address which is published in the DNS system. The owner of an ENUM number can thus publish where a call should be routed to via a DNS entry. In addition, different routes can be defined for different types of calls - for example you can define a different route if the caller is a fax machine. ENUM requires support by the caller s telephone. You register an ENUM number in the same manner that a domain is registered. What is IVR or Interactive Voice Response? Interactive Voice Response or IVR is a telephone technology that communicates with a caller through configurable voice menus and data in real time. In an IVR system, callers are given the choice to select options by pressing digits. IVR systems can normally handle and service a high volume of phone calls. With an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system, businesses can reduce costs and improve customers experience as Interactive Voice Response systems allow callers to obtain required information 24 hours a day without the use of expensive human agents. Some IVR applications include telephone banking, flight-scheduling information, and televoting. MAXIS ONE VOIP provides an IVR that is designed to boost the efficiency of any business by increasing flexibility, simplifying processes, reducing costs, while significantly improving customer satisfaction. What is Unified Communications? Unified Communications is defined as the process in which all means of communication, communication devices, and media are integrated. Unified Communications allows end users to communicate with anyone, wherever they are, in real time. The objective of Unified Communications is to optimize business procedures and boost human communications by simplifying processes. Page 19 of 19
