Wilfrid Laurier University SOCIAL WORK Major Modifications and Substantive Minor Changes Senate, Nov. 26/13 Contents: (master pagination in upper right corner) Major modification: Bachelor of Social Work 2 MOTION that the Academic Planning Committee recommend that Senate approve the following, effective September 1, 2014: that without precedent, and specific only to the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) college graduate stream of the BSW program, students in this stream will be credited with the BF199 and BF299 course requirements in recognition of the learning outcomes achieved in their three-year college diploma. CYW college graduates in the BSW program will be required to take the other two Brantford Foundations courses, BF190 and BF290. Substantive minor changes: Bachelor of Social Work 5 MOTION that the Academic Planning Committee recommend that Senate approve the following, effective September 1, 2014: (i) that BSW Advanced Standing students admitted with Social Service Worker college diplomas be granted six full credits towards the BSW degree; 2.5 of these credits are for social work courses and 3.5 are for non social work courses; (ii) that the following changes be made in the description of progression requirements from year one to year four of the BSW program; (iii) that BSW students who fail to achieve the standing necessary for admission to the subsequent year of their program may proceed on academic probation upon recommendation of the Associate Dean and/or the Dean; (iv) that BSW students who do not meet Bachelor of Social Work GPA graduation requirements would be eligible to graduate from a Laurier Brantford faculty with a General B.A. without designation.
Proposal for Major Modification DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Faculty of Social Work / Bachelor of Social Work MOTION That without precedent, and specific only to the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) college graduate stream of the BSW program, students in this stream will be credited with the BF199 and BF299 course requirements in recognition of the learning outcomes achieved in their three-year college diploma. CYW college graduates in the BSW program will be required to take the other two Brantford Foundations courses, BF190 and BF290. APPROVED AT: FSW Divisional Council E-vote, closed Nov 4, 2013 Senate Academic Planning Committee November 11, 2013 Senate EFFECTIVE DATE: September 1, 2014 DESCRIPTION OF THE PROPOSED CHANGE: The proposed change exempts students in the CYW stream of the BSW program from taking two of the four Brantford Foundations courses based on recognition of the equivalencies in academic work completed through the college diploma. RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE: WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Toronto
A joint review group from the FSW and Laurier Brantford agreed that the successful completion of the CYW diploma sufficiently matches the BF190 and BF299 course requirements. The combined courses within the diploma provide students with an overview of governance and socio-economic organization as well as skills needed for the construction of argumentative essays and the conduct of an effective inquiry. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: As part of a transfer or bridging agreement with college programs, the university does not require that duplicate courses be taken if they are successfully completed at the college level. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: All BSW learning outcomes will be attained at the completion of the BSW degree requirements. IMPACT ON RESOURCES: We expect that this may have a minimal impact because the number of students affected by this change may be few. However, the FSW will undertake to inform the Brantford campus of any significant reductions to the number of students in core courses that might result as a consequence of this change. OLD CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): (N/A) NEW CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): Students in the BSW program who hold a diploma in Child and Youth Worker (CYW) studies will be acknowledged with the BF190 and BF299 course requirements in recognition of the learning outcomes achieved in their three-year college diploma. WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Toronto
WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Proposal for Substantive Minor Curriculum Change DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Faculty of Social Work / BSW MOTION That BSW Advanced Standing students admitted with Social Service Worker college diplomas be granted six full credits towards the BSW degree; 2.5 of these credits are for social work courses and 3.5 are for non social work courses. APPROVED AT FSW Divisional Council October 23, 2013 Senate Academic Planning Committee November 11, 2013 EFFECTIVE DATE September, DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CHANGE: This motion corrects an error in the original BSW proposal regarding the number of transfer credits granted to college graduates from Social Service Worker programs upon entry into the BSW program. 2. RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE: Senate approved proposal grants five course credits to students who enter the BSW program with college diplomas from accredited Social Service Worker programs. The correct number of transfer credits should have been six credits. 3. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: The university establishes many different pathways for graduates from college programs to university degree programs. As noted in the BSW proposal, A priority for alternate entry into our BSW program is to establish more universal, multi-lateral admission criteria with clearer, more transparent admission policies that open BSW study to the qualified graduates of community college programs. This correction ensures fairness in granting credits when considering completed college courses.
4. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: The recognition of all transfer credits allows for a smoother transition between college and university. 5. IMPACT ON RESOURCES: The recognition of an additional credit for work completed means that the university does not have to mount one additional course. 6. OLD CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): FROM THE BSW PROPOSAL: As established by Laurier Brantford and the University Senate, five full course credits can be counted towards the BSW degree. 7. NEW CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): As established by Laurier Brantford and the University Senate, six full course credits can be counted towards the BSW degree.
WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Proposal for Substantive Minor Curriculum Change DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Faculty of Social Work / Bachelor of Social Work MOTION That the following changes be made in the description of progression requirements from year one to year four of the BSW program. APPROVED AT (please note date of approval at previous levels) FSW Divisional Council October 23, 2013 Senate Academic Planning Committee Senate November 11, 2013 EFFECTIVE DATE September 1, DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CHANGE: the following changes as highlighted in the table below are requested because of course sequencing and course availability in the BSW program. Currently Approved by Senate Progression to Yr 2: cumulative 7.0 GPA SW courses; 5.0 GPA non-sw courses Changes Requested remove August 31 deadline remove 1.0 credit repeat limit progression must be met by August credit repeat limit Progression to Yr 3: remove August 31 deadline GPA requirements same as
above remove 1.0 credit repeat limit Requirement prior to Yr 3 pre-field placement: individual grade of 7.0 in each course cumulative GPA of 8.0 in SW311, 312, 313, 314, 315 Progression to Yr 4 and Grad: cumulative 7.0 GPA in all SW courses cumulative 8.0 GPA year 3&4 SW courses 5.0 GPA in non-sw courses 2.0 credit repeat limit for program 2. RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE: Not all courses are offered each term in the academic year. The Registrar indicated that tracking cumulative average of 8.0 across a number of courses, as noted in Year 3, is not possible. Instead, FSW will utilize the attainment of a 7.0 in each course in Year 3 to evaluate student progression. 3. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: n/a 4. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: The addition of more specific progression requirements will make the expectations clearer and better ensure BSW students are able to achieve program learning outcomes by the time of graduation. 5. IMPACT ON RESOURCES: n/a 6. OLD CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): n/a 7. NEW CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): As outlined above.
WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Proposal for Substantive Minor Curriculum Change DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Faculty of Social Work/Bachelor of Social Work MOTION That BSW students who fail to achieve the standing necessary for admission to the subsequent year of their program may proceed on academic probation upon recommendation of the Associate Dean and/or the Dean. APPROVED AT (please note date of approval at previous levels) FSW Divisional Council October 23, 2013 Senate Academic Planning Committee Senate November 11, 2013 EFFECTIVE DATE September 1, DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CHANGE: This policy statement clarifies probation regulations for students in the Bachelor of Social Work program. 2. RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE: The original BSW program proposal did not include a statement on probation, therefore the addition of this policy clarifies the Faculty of Social Work s position on probation in the calendar. The implementation of this straightforward policy assists students in knowing their rights and obligations within the social work program. 3. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: N/A 4. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: The addition of this policy will have no impact on the BSW program learning outcomes. 5. IMPACT ON RESOURCES: N/A 6. OLD CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): N/A 7. NEW CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): Students who fail to achieve the standing necessary for admission to the subsequent year of their
program may proceed on academic probation upon recommendation of the Associate Dean and/or the Dean.
WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Waterloo Brantford Kitchener Proposal for Substantive Minor Curriculum Change DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Faculty of Social Work / BSW MOTION That BSW students who do not meet Bachelor of Social Work GPA graduation requirements would be eligible to graduate from a Laurier Brantford faculty with a General B.A. without designation. A general BA degree program without designation must satisfy the following requirements: 1. at least 15.0 credits 2. the Brantford Foundations curriculum: BF190, BF199, BF290, BF at least 8.0 credits at the senior level (200 or 300 level) 4. at least 8.0 credits that are neither from Division C nor Business 5. a maximum of 3.0 credits in Business 6. a minimum of 5.0 senior credits must be taken at Wilfrid Laurier University. APPROVED AT (please note date of approval at previous levels) FSW Divisional Council October 23, 2013 Senate Academic Planning November 11, 2013 Committee Senate EFFECTIVE DATE September, DESCRIPTION OF PROPOSED CHANGE: There is currently no provision within the BSW program for students who do not meet graduation requirements to graduate with an alternate degree, as is available within all other faculties at Laurier. This motion affirms the granting of an alternate degree for BSW students who do not attain a cumulative 7.0 GPA in all Social Work courses, and a cumulative 5.0 GPA in non-social Work courses.
2. RATIONALE FOR PROPOSED CHANGE: There is no general degree available in the BSW program and we recognize that students who complete the program but do not have a sufficiently high GPA should still have the opportunity to leave Laurier with a degree. 3. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: the university maintains alternate ways and means for the completion of a university education. The provision of an alternate degree permits students to complete a General B.A. without a professional designation. 4. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: The implementation of an alternate degree allows students to graduate from the university and complete personal attainment of learning and critical skills development. There is no impact on the program learning outcomes for the BSW. 5. IMPACT ON RESOURCES: An individual student s shift in his or her major study focus would not affect the operation of the university. 6. OLD CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): (NA) 7. NEW CALENDAR DESCRIPTION (WHERE APPLICABLE): BSW students who do not meet GPA graduation requirements would be eligible to graduate with a General B.A. No Designation.
