All pre-social work students will be assigned to one of three advisors listed. Upon acceptance to the program, students will be assigned to a resident social work faculty. 5 Understanding Your Degree Audit Report (DARS) 5 Admitted students have access to a degree audit report (DARS) showing how transfer and Metropolitan State credits apply to the degree requirements. You can access your DARS through your student portal and E-Services page. For a tutorial on how to read your DARS visit this website: Be sure to check your DARS report regularly to keep track of your progress toward meeting your degree requirements. Be sure to contact your advisor if you have any questions about your DARS report.

7 7 The Social Work Major The social work program offers a multicultural perspective and the opportunity to pursue either a full-time day program or apart-time evening program. The major requires completion of 43 or 45 credits including 600 hours of practicum in pre-selected social service agencies. The program follows a cohort model (admitted students move through the major as a group). To be considered for admission to the social work major, a student must complete three important steps: First, a student must be admitted to the University. Secondly, they must complete all pre-application requirements. Thirdly, students must submit a completed application. The next two slides will provide more detailed information about preapplication requirements and for submitting the application.

8 8 Pre-Application Requirements Completion of all general education requirements: Goals 1-10 Completion of the following seven pre-requisite courses: Anthropology Humans Biology or Biology of women Political Science Psychology Racial Ethnic Issues (content on people of color in U.S.) Introduction to Social Work (or Introduction to Human Services from a community or technical college) Sociology Evidence of community service with people of color through work or volunteer experience. Completion of at least 60 (or more) college-level credits or AA degree. We recommend that students complete all math pre-requisites as directed by their assessments

9 9 Application Process After completing the pre-application requirements as directed by your advisor, students must complete and submit a separate application to the social work department. The process includes the following steps: 1. Completion of the social work application form. 2. Submission of a personal statement that responds to the questions at the end of the application form. 3. Documentation that the applicant will have met the general education, assessment requirements and seven pre-requisite courses prior to admission to the program in the Fall semester. 4. Two letters of recommendation as specified in the application form. 5. Completion of an interview with a faculty member of the Social Work Department. The Social Work Program has a rolling admissions policy. That is, students will begin to be admitted from spring to early summer for the following fall semester. We will continue admitting students until both the full-time day and part-time evening programs have 24 students in each program. Students are only admitted once a year.

10 10 Transfer Credits Your DARS will indicate which of your ten General Education & Liberal Arts (GELS) goals were satisfied with your transfer courses. However, your DARS will not reflect which of your transfer courses satisfies the social work pre-requisites courses. Meet with your advisor about this. Any transfer of social work courses completed at another accredited social work program will be reviewed on a case by case basis by the Chair of the department. First check with your advisor about this process of review. Community colleges offer many of the courses that the Department of Social Work will accept as equivalent to most of the pre-requisite courses, but these courses will transfer only as lower division courses. Community colleges only teach lower division courses ( ). Some transfer courses may satisfy both a general education and a pre-requisite course. Check with your advisor to clarify which may satisfy both requirements. At Metro State lower division courses have courses numbers and upper division courses have course numbers

11 11 Registration Tips and Tools General Education courses may fill early, since they are in high demand. Be proactive about registering when your window opens for these high-demand classes, if you need them. Be sure to refer to the notes section of a course description prior to attempting to register. This is where information about prerequisites, course meeting dates, as well as other important details are listed. 12 12 Next Steps Checklist Make an early appointment with your advisor to review your credits and other important information about the Social Work Major. Take Assessments if needed (and not already completed). Set up Student Portal access and address. Obtain Student ID Card. Register for classes and purchase books. Check each step of the process with your assigned advisor as you progress in completion of preapplication and application requirements.
