2 THE APPLIED ARTS The 1.5 credit graduation requirement in the Arts (see page 7) may be satisfied by taking courses in Visual Arts or in the following departments: BUSINESS, FAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES, or TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION. The course sequences and course descriptions are listed under each department on the following pages. Courses in the Applied Arts may be taken to broaden your educational background, pursue an area of specific interest, or prepare for a career or college. The Applied Arts at GHS offers you the opportunity to develop skills and acquire knowledge that will be useful throughout your life. 3 BUSINESS EDUCATION Business Education provides valuable skills and knowledge for all students. Our courses are taught with the goal of developing skills for the 21 st Century global economy. Some of the skill sets that will be developed are global awareness, collaboration, oral and written communications, critical thinking and problem solving, and a well-defined work ethic as a self-directed contributor. Our courses are based on the National Standards for Business Education. Business Education courses can be used to fulfill all of the 1 ½ credits in the arts needed for graduation. ACCOUNTING Blocks 1 Credit Accounting is the language of business. The fundamentals of accounting are presented in this course. Students learn the accounting cycle including journals, posting, trial balance, income statement and balance sheet and will be introduced to computerized accounting. Simulation of a realistic business situation is presented with an automated practice set. INVESTMENTS / Blocks ½ Credit The world of investing and the operation of the stock market are the key components of this course. Students will evaluate and analyze many investment options in a collaborative environment. Emphasis is placed on developing strong oral and written business communication skills. Students participate in the Stock Market Game. HONORS FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING Blocks 1 Credit Prerequisite: Grades 11 or 12, and successful completion of Algebra 2A with a C+ or better. Accounting is the language of business. This course provides an integrated approach to accounting that places an emphasis on real-world business processes. Students will learn to plan and evaluate relevant accounting activities from both an internal and external reporting prospective. This unique approach combines financial and managerial accounting principles. BUSINESS LAW / Blocks ½ Credit This course addresses statutes and regulations affecting businesses, families and individuals. Knowledge of business law is useful for students as everyone eventually assumes roles as citizens, workers and consumers. Topics include ethics, contract law, credit and bankruptcy, business structures and negotiable instruments. Students will analyze relevant casestudies with a mock-trial as the culminating activity ENTREPRENEURSHIP / Blocks ½ Credit Students in this course run a small business. Working the Junior Achievement, students learn how to write a business plan that includes marketing, sales production finance and human resources. In this hands-on learning experience, students choose a product, find a supplier and sell a product. The final project is a group presentation incorporating all aspects of the business plan. Individual responsibility is a must for success in this class. Students should be selfmotivated and directed with a strong work ethic. MARKETING / Blocks ½ Credit Do you want to know how a product idea comes to life? Marketing skills and knowledge areas are fundamental to understanding business. Students are introduced to the seven functions of marketing, in particular market planning, promotion, product/service management and marketing information systems. Concepts are strategies of bringing a new product to market are applied throughout the course. Students will have a stronger understanding of the marketplace upon completion of this course. ADVANCED MARKETING 2 nd semester Blocks ½ Credit Prerequisite: Successful completion of Marketing and teacher approval. This course provides an in-depth study of marketing. An emphasis is placed on developing strong oral and written business communication skills. For this project-based course, students should be self-motivated and directed with a strong work ethic. PERSONAL FINANCE / Blocks ¼ Credit Prerequisite: sophomore, junior or senior This course is a must-have for all students before they graduate from Greenwich High School! Students will become financially literate and fiscally competent. Topics include savings and investing, budgeting, banking, credit insurance and career opportunities. 30
4 KEYBOARDING WITH WORD PROCESSING** / Blocks ½ Credit Blocks ½ Credit This course teaches students to touch-type. Students develop their individual speed and accuracy skills with the use of individualized lessons and learn essential skills needed to prepare documents, including letter and reports. ADVANCED WORD PROCESSING ** / Blocks ½ Credit Blocks ½ Credit Prerequisite: Successful completion of Keyboarding with Word Processing or demonstrate proficiency in basic word processing. Students will refine their editing, formatting and document production skills. Students will also improve their individual speed and accuracy. COMPUTER APPLICATIONS IN BUSINESS / Blocks ½ Credit Utilizing the power of Excel, students will develop in-depth knowledge and skills to prepare and analyze spreadsheets. This valuable skill will enhance your marketability in the work-force. POWERPOINT** / Blocks ¼ Credit PowerPoint is a performance-based program enabling students to create visual aids for use in presentations for classes, clubs or other activities. Students execute specific tasks which will result in an immediate improvement in their computer skills and ability to create effective presentations. **NOTE: Upon successful completion of the above courses as per Norwalk Community College requirements, students will receive 3 credits per course (up to 12 credits) from NCC upon enrollment. 5 CAREER EXPLORATION AND AWARENESS PROGRAM SENIOR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM Prerequisite: Seniors with the following qualifications: 1. A minimum of a cumulative 2.0 grade point average at the end of first semester senior year. 2. Satisfactory attendance and discipline record, no credit loss senior year. 3. Guidance Counselor, Housemaster, and parent endorsements. 4. Successful completion of June graduation requirements. 5. No failed courses during senior year. The purpose of the Senior Internship Program is to enable our students to explore an area of interest outside the classroom. By helping to foster independence and decision-making skills, the program will provide students an opportunity to make a smoother transition from high school to college, the work place, or military service. Students can explore a career interest or service opportunity in a field prior to beginning formal training in college or other post-secondary schooling. The selected seniors will serve their internships during the last five weeks of the fourth marking period. These students will be released from their classes and will attend their internship at the selected site. Prior to the start of the internship students must provide evidence from each of their teachers that they have successfully completed the learning expectations for the course. Credit for the fourth marking period will be contingent on successful completion of the internship. The students will be evaluated in writing by their site supervisors, will be required to keep a journal, and are expected to work a minimum of thirty hours per week. Every senior will be invited to participate in this program. Applications will be made available through the Senior Internship website. For further information regarding this program, students should see their Guidance Counselor or come to the Career Center. SENIOR PROJECT Prerequisite: Seniors with the following qualifications: 1. A minimum of a cumulative 2.0 grade point average at the end of first semester of senior year. 2. Satisfactory attendance and discipline record, no credit loss senior year. 3. Guidance Counselor, Housemaster, and parent endorsements. 4. Successful completion of June graduation requirements. 5. Submit a written proposal developed in consultation with a teacher mentor. 6. No failed courses senior year Through the Senior Project students create a culminating activity in which they apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired during high school to an area of personal interest. Students are encouraged to synthesize information and ideas, to think critically, and to bring their project from the original proposal to completion in a five-week time period. Students interested in doing a Senior Project must submit an application to their Housemaster. At the end of the five-week period, a reflection paper must be submitted and the student will make a presentation to a House-based review committee as the culminating experience. Seniors who opt for this program will control their own learning and gain insights into the demands of the postsecondary experience. Seniors involved in this program may choose to end one class for every 6 hours on project. Students will be encouraged to complete their research on campus and also use the many facilities available to them in and around our community. Every senior will be invited to participate in this program. If you are interested in participating, please see your guidance counselor. WORK STUDY PROGRAM WORK EXPERIENCE The Work Experience Program is for students who wish to develop job skills but have not identified a specific career interest. The program consists of Career Planning at GHS and training in basic work skills through jobs in industries and offices. Students are in school in the morning and are employed at least fifteen hours per week in the afternoon. Students are monitored on the job by a GHS Work Experience Coordinator. Their employer assigns a grade for work performance and the final grade is determined by the Work Experience Coordinator. Students are required to enroll in Career Planning in order to participate in the work experience program.
