1 Application Note Alarm Group in Observer 9.1 Introduction An alarm group can be created if a user wishes to collect data from other measurement points. When an alarm is raised, the measurement data at that measurement point is saved in the database. If one of the measurement points in the alarm group generates an alarm, data on all the measurement points in that alarm group will also be saved. An alarm group is a set of measurement points that automatically stores vibration data on all the measurement points in the group when one of the measurement points goes into an alarm condition. This will provide the vibration analyst a more extensive data to analyze when the alarm arises. The type of data can be one or all of the following types: static (trends) or dynamic (vibration spectra, time waveform, envelope spectra). The data is stored upon either reaching a Warning or an Alarm. = Warning = Alarm This is a useful tool from a vibration analysis point of view. This feature allows a more complete picture about the cause of the alarm on the machine. Fig. 1 shows where to find the Alarm group in the main menu. Fig. 1. Create an Alarm group.

2 Procedure To create an alarm group, go to Database in the main menu in fig. 1 and select Alarm group. The window displayed in fig. 2a will be opened. When clicking on the New button, the Alarm group window in fig. 2b will be opened. Type a name for the Alarm group and click OK. In this case, an alarm group called Cooling water Pump 1 was created. There are three options to select depending on what kind of data that the user would like to store upon an alarm. The alarm group "Cooling water pump 1" Fig. 2a. The Alarm group window. Fig. 2b. 3 Name is the name of the Alarm group to be created or edited. Alarm interval for members allows to select a scheduled storage setting for storage of data (see Table 1). Table 1 Predefined alarm groups for storage of data upon an alarm Alarm group types NONE (is the default setting for the alarm group) STATIC What kind of data is stored Stores trend data according to the alarm group schedule on the alarming measurement point, and according to the normal schedule on the other points in the measurement group. Trend data are stored according to the alarm group schedule on the alarming measurement point. Dynamic data are stored according to the normal schedule on the measurement point. STATIC and DYNAMIC Stores static and dynamic data according to the alarm group schedule on all the measurement points in the measurement group. The option "Static" automatically stores: Vibration trend and Process data upon an alarm Note: Process data are like: Motor load in (kw), rotational speed of the motor in (rpm) and vibration trend values (for example, unbalance, misalignment, blade pass frequency). The option "Static and dynamic" automatically stores: Vibration trend and Process data "Vibration and Phase" spectra, and Time waveform data Min. time is the duration of time in seconds that has to pass without any alarm in order to again store all the data on the measurement points of the specified alarm group. The recommended minimum time is 30 seconds ( fig. 2c). Fig. 2c. The parameter "Min. time". 3

5 Add an alarm group to a measurement point To add an alarm group to a measurement point, open the measurement point window and select the Monitoring tab in fig. 3. Then go to the Alarm group and click on text <None>. Select the alarm group Cooling water pump in the drop down list. Repeat the above procedure to include more measurement points in the alarm group.
