With this addition, students entering the program can now select admissions to either the professional or the traditional track. The program underwent a 12 month review by human resource departments and heads of organizations in the areas of law enforcement, corrections and juvenile justice and based on their assessments, the course selections were revised. In addition to the Law Enforcement and Corrections concentration, the program has added a concentration in Juvenile Justice. Finally, under my administration, the number of graduate students entering and graduating from the program has seen a dramatic increase. Albuquerque, NM: March RESEARCH EXPERIENCE and PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT The State of North Carolina s Department of Public Instruction Principle Investigator Conducted a two prong research project for the state of North Carolina on long term suspended and expelled students. The first approach consisted of surveying all public and charter schools in North Carolina to assess the availability of options to educate long term-suspended and expelled students. The survey assessed the number and kinds of programs available in these schools as well as barriers to participation, the parent notification process, the appeals process, and the extent to which the schools collaborated with juvenile justice agencies. The second approach evaluated the formal and informal processes that might contribute to students being long term suspended and expelled including parental knowledge of the process of appeals. The District of Columbia s Child and Family Services Agency, th Street, SW Washington, DC Senior Research Analyst Responsibilities included co-directing the research of the Office of Clinical Practice, and managing the activities of 3 program analysts in the unit. My duties included the following: defining the scope of work for research assignments, which often included designing the sampling scheme; overseeing the actual data collection and cleanup; and, writing and editing reports from the data collected. I used SPSS, Access and Excel to analyze and organize the data and reports. I was also responsible for co-creating a data collection tool in an oracle-based 3 P a g e
4 RESEARCH EXPERIENCE and PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT (cont.) system, which was used by the agency to determine compliance for clients in foster care. The creation of the data collection tool included determining the type of data to be collected, as well as working with the system developer to insure that the information entered in the oracle system was user friendly. In addition, I was responsible for ensuring that all agency needs were met by the development of this new system. This included such things as overseeing the training of social workers and others on the use of the data system, to the generation of required reports. Abt Associates, 1110 Vermont Ave., Suite 610, Washington, DC Senior Analyst Project 1: Responsibilities included serving as a Site Liaison for the ADAM Program, which is a project funded by the National Institute of Justice. The purpose of this project was to monitor data collection at different sites in order to insure randomized selection of participants into the study. As a Site Liaison, I managed 11 ADAM sites and their staff around the country. Duties included ensuring that data collected adhered to national program standards established by the National Institute of Justice. I also worked with new ADAM sites to assist with program implementation, and with existing sites to provide technical assistance and monitor site adherence to quarterly minimum performance standards. I helped develop a standardized addendum for the supplemental data collection process across all the ADAM sites. In addition, I was responsible for evaluating data for each quarter the site collected data. The evaluation included utilizing SAS and SPSS data analysis analyses software programs. I was responsible for writing reports for the sites to correct any problems that were detected during monitoring, such as sampling problems. Other duties included developing training tools for the other site liaisons to use to train their sites on sampling and proper data collection. Project 2: Performed programming duties for an agriculture project conducted in Egypt. Duties for this project were mostly managing the data gathered in Egypt. Managing the data included cleaning the data set and analyzing the data for the final report. Project 3: Responsible for conducting site visits for a police officer and corrections officer stress program. The site visits required me to observe the programs in place to reduce stress and to talk to corrections officers, police officers, and their spouses about the effects stress has on their job and family relationships. The data was compiled from my observations and interviews into a final site visit report. The Urban Institute, 2100 M Street, NW Washington, DC Research Associate Assisted with the final evaluation of the Brooklyn Drug Court a project funded by the Justice Department in partnership with local agencies. Duties included completing the data analysis and data management in SAS for the 5-year longitudinal study. Also, responsible for helping to construct and write the final report. In addition, edited articles submitted to referee journals for review. 4 P a g e

Spectrum Health s Healthier Communities, Grand Rapids, MI Evaluator/Program Developer Developed a comprehensive youth job training program that targets individuals who were adjudicated and have been released from detention. This program addresses the educational, social, environmental, and spiritual needs that may hinder the program participants from finding jobs in the community. Specific duties included helping to construct the program s components and curriculum by researching existing programs and tapping into available community resources and then tailoring this knowledge to fit the goals of the grantee. In addition, I constructed a data collection instrument and developed the format for a focus group essential in the development of the program components and the data collection instrument. Union Missionary Baptist Church, 1020 West Hillsdale, Lansing, MI Evaluator/ Program Developer Ingham County Mental Health Department funded a community-based initiative targeting juveniles at-risk for delinquency. My duties included constructing the program s 20-week curriculum, which consisted of seven target areas. As the evaluator, I created the measurement instrument, analyzed the data in SPSS, and wrote the final report. Institute for Children Youth and Families Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Evaluator, October 1999 present Conduct process and impact evaluations on assigned projects. Specific duties include analyzing data and writing reports for assigned projects. School of Human Ecology - Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Project Coordinator, January 1999-May 1999 Supervised a team of individuals who conducted workshops in the local high schools. Organized a one-day conference that brought local high school students on campus to participate in activities that were aimed at developing the interests of the participants in higher education. School of Criminal Justice-Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Research Assistant, August 1997-May Member of a team that collected research for Michigan s Department of Corrections to determine the correlates of probation recidivism in the State of Michigan. The project lasted a year and included data entry. Other duties included data analyses, writing a paper for publication and assisting with other research duties for assigned professor. University of South Carolina Southern Region Violence and Substance Abuse Center (VSAC), Columbia, SC. Consultant/ Researcher, May 1998 August Constructed a survey on Middle School and High School students attitudes on crime, violence, substance abuse and sexual behaviors for a 200-attendance youth conference. This project led to a national model for juvenile alcohol assessment. 5 P a g e

National Juvenile Detention Association (NJDA)-East Lansing, MI Consultant/Researcher, May Administered surveys and conducted focus group discussions with detainees in the Cook County Temporary Juvenile Detention Center, Chicago, IL to assess their social climate. National Juvenile Detention Association (NJDA)-Michigan State University, E. Lansing, MI Consultant, November 1996-February 1997 Completed a Compendium for alternatives to detention that address the problem of overcrowding in juvenile detention facilities. North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC Research Assistant: I managed the second wave of surveys for the Police Community Initiatives Project (PCIP) a project funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). Duties included revising the original survey and cleaning the data collected from the first wave of data collection. I supervised a survey team that was responsible for collecting data through telephone interviews. Participated in community forums where qualitative data was collected through informal interviews and focus group discussions. Other departmental duties included entering and analyzing data utilizing SPSS as well as writing reports and grants. Other departmental duties included data collection, administering surveys and writing progress and final reports as well as grants for research funds. TEACHING EXPERIENCE Criminal Justice Department - North Carolina Central University - Durham, NC Assistant Professor, Spring present. Responsible for teaching assigned courses including theory and research methods. The research methods course is taught in order to give students the opportunity to complete an entire research project utilizing the scientific method as well as knowledge and skills learned in theory and statistics. In addition, I teach special topic courses on class, race and gender issues. Also, I serve on thesis committees. Saint Augustine s College, 1315 Oakwood Avenue, Raleigh, NC Assistant Professor, Spring 2003 Fall 2004 Responsible for teaching four courses per semester undergraduate research methods, statistics, theory and other assigned courses. In addition service on assigned committees was required as well as participating in grant writing activities. Department of Urban Affairs, Social Science, and Social Work-University of the District of Columbia - Washington, DC Instructor, Spring I was responsible for teaching a juvenile justice class. Students were challenged to think systemically about issues in juvenile justice.
