3 Basic ipad with ios 5.x Overview ipad Buttons and Other Named Areas The ipad has several buttons and other named areas on the device that control various features and/or add function to the ipad. Below is a diagram showing where each button/named area is located and what it is called. Additional explanation for some buttons/named areas can be found below.! Status Bar - Tiny icons in this area provide useful information such as the time, battery level and wireless connection.! Front Camera - Useful for taking self-portraits with PhotoBooth and for connecting via FaceTime! Home - Press this button to return to the Home screen! Side Switch - This can be set to control volume or screen rotation. 3

4 Gesture Terminology There are many different gestures you will need to use when you are working on your ipad. It is helpful if you understand the gesture terminology setup for ipad users. Below is a list of these terms with a brief explanation for each. " Tap - use your fingertip to tap on the screen " Pinch - place your thumb and one finger on the screen and pull them together while still touching the screen " Swipe - touch your finger to the screen and slide it in the direction you want to go " Flick - touch your finger to the screen and quickly slide and release " Drag - place your finger on the desired location and keep it firmly pressed while moving to the new location Multitasking Bar Double-tap the Home button to get the multitasking bar to show. It will appear over the Dock area of the screen. Multitasking Bar The multitasking bar shows you all of the apps that are running in the background. Swipe from right to left with your finger to see all running apps. To close a running app, press on the app until it starts to jiggle and then tap the minus sign. Press the minus sign to close a running app The multitasking bar can also take you to some additional controls for your ipad. Swipe from left to right with your finger to access these controls. The icon on the far left provides either rotation lock or mute, depending on setting for side switch 4

5 Capturing a screenshot To capture an image of your ipad screen, simultaneously hold down both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button for almost a second. A photo of your ipad screen will be sent to your camera roll. Frozen ipad If your ipad is not responding (frozen), do a hard reboot by pressing the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button together for 10 seconds. Ignore the slide to power off message. The ipad will shut down. Wait a few seconds and then press the Sleep/Wake button to restart the ipad. Organize apps As you add apps to your ipad, you will want to organize them in a way that is meaningful to you. You may also find that after you use some apps, you no longer want to keep them on your device. Below you will find a few tips to keep your ipad organized. Moving apps To move an app, press on it until it starts to jiggle. Press down and drag the app to the new location. To drag across screens, drag all the way to edge of the screen and wait for the screen to change to the next page. To get the apps to stop jiggling, press the Home button once. Deleting apps To delete an app, press on it until it starts to jiggle. Tap the X and confirm that you really want to delete it. Note: You can always restore any app you have purchased or downloaded for free by going to the App Store and tapping on the Purchased button. Tap on Not On This ipad and find the app you want to restore. Click on the download cloud to reinstall it. Making folders You can put up to 20 apps together in a folder. To create a folder, touch and hold an app until it starts to jiggle. Drag the app on top of another app that you also want in the folder. The folder will automatically be created with a name based on the type of apps you have put in it. You can tap the name field to enter a different name. Add additional apps to the folder by dragging them into it. Rearrange folders by pressing until any folder or app begins to jiggle and then drag the folders to where you want them on the screen. If desired, you can move a folder to a different screen. You can even move a folder to the Dock. To delete a folder remove all of the apps that are in it by dragging them back onto the screen. When only one app is left the folder will disappear. 5

7 Nice to Know About Settings Settings: Picture Frame The Picture Frame icon next to the slide to unlock phrase that appears when you wake your ipad, will launch a slideshow of your photos when you tap it. This makes your ipad into a digital picture frame for you and others to enjoy. Using the Picture Frame settings, you can customize the display. Options you can set include: " Transitions - choose from Dissolve or Origami " Show each photo for - choose 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 or 20 seconds " Zoom in on Faces - does not work with Origami transition " Shuffle - show pictures in order or randomly " All Photos or selected Albums - tap on Albums and then make your selection for which ones to use in the slideshow Settings: General Usage When you tap on Usage you will see a summary of how the Storage on your ipad is being used. You will get information about how much storage is still available for you as well as the apps that are using the most storage. By clicking on the arrows next to each app you will be taken to another screen where you can get additional information and with some apps you will be able to delete them right from here if you are in need of opening up some extra storage space. You can manage icloud storage from here. Under the Battery Usage area you can turn Battery Percentage on. This will place the actual percentage of battery life left next to the battery icon in the top right area of the ipad screen. Spotlight Search To access the Spotlight Search feature, you need to be on the Home screen of your ipad and then press the Home button once. In the search field, begin to type in what you are searching for and choices that match will appear. Tap on the item you want. 7

8 Spotlight Search showing results from Apps, Videos & Mail Using the Spotlight Search settings, you can edit what will be searched when you are using Spotlight Search. You can choose to search or not search in Contacts, Applications, Music, Podcasts, Videos, Audiobooks, Notes, Events, Mail, Reminders, and Messages. Restrictions If you are using your ipad with children, this is an especially important setting. You can use it to stop some apps from being used, determine content ratings allowed for some apps, prevent deleting or installing of apps and more. Use Side Switch to: The Side Switch can be set to Lock Rotation of the screen or to Mute the sound on the ipad. Whichever choice you make here, the other choice will be available by revealing the Multitasking Bar (see Chapter 1: Multitasking Bar) and swiping from right to left. Multitasking Gestures If you turn Multitasking Gestures on, you will have some access to some convenient ways to perform some common ipad functions. With this setting on, you can do the following using four or five fingers: " pinch to return to the last apps screen you were using " swipe up to reveal Multitasking Bar and swipe down to hide it " swipe left or right between open apps 8

9 Keyboard If you tap on International Keyboards you will be able to add additional keyboards that are coded for the language you select. The Emoji keyboard is a fun keyboard to add. It will give you access to a large variety of emoticons and symbols to use when you type. To access a different keyboard, tap on the globe icon that appears to the left of the space bar. Settings: icloud Find My ipad If your ipad is ever stolen or lost, you will be very glad that you set up Find My ipad. If this ever happens to you, go to the icloud website ( and enter your itunes login information. Even though it is an ipad that is missing, click on Find my iphone. A map will open and all of your registered devices will be available for you to click on and show their current location. 9

10 You have several available options to assist you in the retrieval of your ipad: " send a sound or message to the ipad. " remote lock it. " remote wipe it. Settings: Mail, Contacts, Calendars To change the name others see in the From: field of mail you send, tap the mail account you need to edit, tap Account and then change your Name. To change your signature, scroll down and tap Signature and then edit the information. Settings: Safari Safari is the ipad s built-in Internet browser. In the General section of the Safari settings you can choose between Google, Yahoo or Bing for your default Search Engine. in the Privacy section you can clear your browsing history, clear cookies left by sites you visited, and clear any data like login information you have entered and saved. Settings: Notes You can change the default font for Notes. You can choose from three different font types. They are Noteworthy, Helvetica and Marker Felt. Settings: Tips to Extend Battery Life Making some changes to certain settings will help extend the battery life of your ipad after each recharge. All users will have to determine if making these changes is appropriate for how they are using their ipads. " Tip 1: Turn off the Push setting for Fetch New Data in the Mail, Contacts, Calendar area of Settings. " Tip 2: Turn off Bluetooth in the General area of Settings. " Tip 3: Turn off Wi-Fi in the Wi-Fi area of Settings " Tip 4: A fast shortcut to quickly do Tips 1-3 is to go to Settings and set Airplane Mode to On. 10

11 Onscreen Keyboard Tips The onscreen keyboard pops onto the ipad screen anytime you tap in a location where text, etc. can be entered. Below are some tips to help make using the onscreen keyboard a bit more user friendly. " Quick Periods - Double tap the spacebar to add a period " Quick Apostrophes - Hold down the comma to find a hidden apostrophe " Quick Quotation Marks - Hold down the period to find quotation marks " Quick Numbers & Symbols - To quickly insert a number or symbol located on the secondary keyboard, from the alpha keyboard, hold down the number button then drag to the number or symbol you want to use. You will return to the alpha keyboard when you release the selected key. " Caps Lock - To turn on caps lock, double-click the shift key (up arrow) on the keyboard. The shift key will have a blue background when caps lock is on. Single-click the shift button to turn off caps lock. " URL Extensions - When you are entering a URL in an area where the ipad is expecting one, a.com key will appear on the keyboard. If you press and hold the.com key, alternate internet extensions for URLs like.net and.org will be available to slide up to and select. " World Language Characters - Hold down letter keys to access characters and symbols needed for other languages " Split the Keyboard - Hold down on the keyboard button in the bottom right of the keyboard and select Split. The keyboard shrinks and divides in two. This makes it easy to type with your thumbs as you are holding the ipad. Press the keyboard button and select Dock and Merge to return to normal mode. 12 Nice to Knows about Built-in Apps Camera You can access the camera s Zoom feature by pinching the screen in or out. A slider will appear near the bottom of the screen. Use the the slider to adjust the zoom to where you want it. Maps Street view is a feature of Maps that allows you to view and navigate through panoramic street level images of cities around the world. You can access street view on the Maps app by searching for a location or pressing anywhere on the map to drop a pin. Once the pin appears, tap on the red person icon in the left area of the information/address bar and you will be switched to street view. (The red person icon will be grayed out when street view is not available.) Press on the person icon to change to street view When you are in street view, you can drag your finger to change your point of view. You can look up, down and all around! Exit street view by tapping on the circle in the lower right corner. 12

13 Tapping the blue i icon on the right side of the information/address bar will bring up several options for the current location. You will be able to: " get directions to or from the location " view the address of the location " remove the pin " add the address to your Contacts " share the location with others via , text message or a Tweet " bookmark it for easy access in the future When you are in map view you can access different map configurations by tapping on the flap in the bottom right corner and peeling back the map. You can change the map view to any of these choices: " Standard - default road view map with named roads, businesses, etc. " Satellite - bird s eye images of the area you are viewing " Hybrid - bird s eye images of the area you are viewing combined with named roads, businesses, etc. " Terrain - physical map based on terrain information like elevation " Traffic - turn on this overlay to see current traffic conditions From this area of Maps you can also Print if you have set up an ipad compatible printer. 13

14 App Store Purchased Apps (paid & free) Apps that you download will always belong to you even if you remove them from your ipad. Using the App Store, you can easily view the apps you have purchased as well as those that are not currently on your ipad. From the App Store you can also re-download any previously purchased apps that are not currently on your ipad. To do this, launch the App Store and tap on the Purchased icon at the bottom of the screen. Use the tabs at the top to see a list of All of your apps (paid and free) or to just see those Not On This ipad. Tap the icloud icon for any apps that you want to put back on your ipad. Redeem an itunes Gift Card Purchased area of App Store with All tab selected To redeem an itunes gift card, launch the App Store and scroll down to the bottom of the screen. Tap on the Redeem button and follow the prompts. Tap on the Apple ID button and login to view your available gift card funds. 14

15 Safari Adding Bookmarks You can save Bookmarks for web sites you visit on your ipad Safari browser. To save a Bookmark, do the following: 1. browse to the site you want to use 2. click on the arrow to the left of the URL field 3. tap on Add Bookmark 4. edit the name if desired and then tap Save Accessing Saved Bookmarks To access your saved Bookmarks, tap on the open book icon to the left of the URL field. A list of your Bookmarks will open. Tap on the one you want to visit. 15

16 Creating Shortcuts You can add a shortcut to a web site that you visit frequently to your ipad screen. It will look much like any other app. To make one of these shortcuts, do the following: 1. Browse to the site you want to use. 2. Click on the arrow to the left of the URL field 3. Tap on Add to Home Screen 4. Edit the name if desired and then tap Add/ Safari will close and you will see your shortcut on your ipad screen. OS Home is the new shortcut 16

17 Finding Text When you are browsing with Safari you can use the Google search bar to find text on the page you are viewing. To do this, type your desired word in the search bar and below where the Google Suggestions appear, look for the section called On this Page. Tap on Find your word. Searching for the word information - note the On This Page section 17

18 The word you are looking for will be highlighted throughout the page with a navigation menu to locate more instances of the same word showing at the bottom of the page. To search on the same page for another word, tap in the navigation menu where your original word shows at the bottom of the screen, use the x to delete the word and enter your new term. 18

19 General Tips Quick delete You can quickly delete an message by swiping over it in your inbox. This will put you directly into Edit mode where you can tap Delete. This method works in Notes, Safari Bookmarks and other apps too. Definitions In some apps you can easily access definitions without using a Dictionary App. To do this, tap and hold to select a word and when a menu bar appears, release the tap. If necessary, use the arrows to navigate until you see Define. Tap on Define to open the built-in dictionary. Click on Search Web or Search Wikipedia to access more information about the word. 19

20 Resources Printers that Work with ipads Click on the link to view a list of ipad compatible printers: You can print directly from the Apple applications ibooks, Mail, Photos, and Safari. Other apps may also offer this feature. To print from a print compatible app, follow these steps: 1. Tap the action icon. 2. Tap the Print button. 3. Configure the printer options and then tap Print. Note: If you are printing for the first time, or if the previously selected printer is not available, you will need to select the printer before step 3. ebooks ibooks ibooks is Apple s ebook reader. It is connected to the book section of the itunes store making it easy to make purchases using your Apple ID. ibooks can also be used to read pdf files and some free ebooks. epubbooks epubbooks - epubbooks is a service that allows for many different online ebooks stores to be searched simultaneously. The results can be filtered by reading device, making sure only books that will work for you and your ereader will be displayed. Along with searching by device, results can be viewed based on genre and price. Their catalog currently holds hundreds of thousands of ebooks that can be purchased. In addition to these new releases and bestsellers, they also provide over 800 free ebooks for you to download and read. Note: Registration is required at the epubbooks website. You will also need the free Ebook Reader app. When you choose a book it will ask you if you have the app. If you say no, it will take you to the App Store to download it. If you say yes, it will take you to Ebook Reader and ask you to login. Use the same login you created at the website. Your username is your address. The book will be downloaded for you to read. Free epub Children s Picture Books Free epub Children s Picture Books - This site currently has 16 picture books created from the free books available as part of Project Gutenberg. The public domain availability of Project Gutenberg books means that most of the selections are 19th-century books from the United Kingdom. Note: To get one of the Free epub Children s Picture Books on your ipad, open the link in Safari, then click on the epub form of the book and choose which ereader you want to open it in. In most cases you will want to pick ibooks. 20

21 Apps to Enhance Productivity To learn more about any of the apps listed below, click on the name of the app. The App Store will open and take you directly to the clicked app. You will be able to read reviews, see screenshots and install the app if desired. Free Cloud Storage These apps provide a quick and easy way to get files onto your ipad. You can set it up so documents sync between your different devices. You can share items with others via or a link. You can make some items publicly available. " Dropbox (free) " Box.net (free) *Browser to play Flash videos " iswifter Flash Web Browser *Note taking & so much more! These apps allow you to take notes in a variety of ways. You can type, draw, record voice narration, annotate PDFs, and insert images.
